but I absolutely love "Come To My Door."
I had that song on repeat after repeat last fall.
And I really, really like "Trouble" and "It's All Over Your Body," but like I said in a previous thread... I wish they hadn't been available for the past year plus.

"I wish they hadn't been available for the past year plus" - yup, this is exactly why I stay well clear of songs until the album is in my hands. I have the Oh No and Spinna remixes but haven't heard the originals at all.

So excited to get this album!!!

I remembered your comment as I was listening and it's interesting that those are the older songs, as there is somewhat of a sonic difference to them and the latter half of the album. They are dope, but like I said before seem like Jose does D' and what every other soul singer does, wheras the latter half feels like him doing him. He pulls both off but I wonder how that shift went down.

Not a bad track in the bunch and a few great ones. Heaven on the Ground was a stand-out from the first listen -- as were the songs I already mentioned. I wish there was another mid-tempo track or two ala Trouble, though. Much more a traditional jazz sound than Black Magic. Because so many of the tracks are slow, I don't see myself playing the album a ton, but in the right mood, it will kill.
These are just initial thoughts though, I won't listen again until the release... or leak. lol.

Exactly the kind of stuff I want to hear!

This is dope music.

I fully support Jose.

I was a bit scared with the first track that the album would really sound like Voodoo but the other tracks are pretty different.

What I like particularly with Jose's music is the harmony: I always like the chord progressions.

And in the end, I believe this is a big part of what music is all about, beside melody and sound.

So word up for Jose James! I hope this album will be successful.

This is esactly the direction I wanted him to go. It starts out feeling somewhere in between D' and Bilal, but by the time you get to Heaven on the Ground it's his lane and his lane alone. Reminds me why his first album made me pull out Johnny Hartman. He got that voice. And he's singing with players. We good we good!!!

Love the afrobeat groove and percussion on this collabo with Hindi Zahra. His new album 'No Beginning No End' is fantastic.

I mean, it approaches biting (he even took pino, lol)

I'd be annoyed with it if he didn't do it so well - and to be fair, it's Voodoo'd out but he takes it and runs with it. All Over Your Body is the most obvious nod of the lot, because it really functions like a Playa Playa.

Regardless: loving the album a lot, and strangely enough the really straightforward, almost cheesy tunes are my favorites so far (Heaven on the Ground, Come to My Door, Trouble).

or something like that. LOL!! I kept hearing it like uhhhh seriously. I mean song is still undeniable, but even with Pino I'd expect a little more diversion from another man's sound. But I'm not that mad at it.

Sword and Guns for me is just a Bilal song. As much as I love the acoustic guitar I don't think it's a great match for his style. But that's my wife's fave so I can't complain. Like I said above, my favorite parts really are the latter half of the album where he's just doing him. But it's good that he *can* do those other things.

I can see that - that track calls for a voice like Bilal's - kind of feel like James's voice gets buried among everything going on in that song

what I'm saying is on most albums, a song like this would be closer to end on a high note
he put it first and took off from there, the guy knows how to put an album together
