"Great Hip-Hop Albums by 10+ Year Vets"

Meaning, an album that dropped a decade after the Group/MC made their debut.

And I'm talking great albums.

Albums that are brought up when speaking of that group/mc's best.

But that wasn't your reasoning in the original post. You said "great albums," and I definitely think American Gangster is a great album.

I never go back to it

And I did say that when you speak on the artists best albums you speak on said album.

And AG is not in the same league as RD or B to me at all so I wouldn't count it.

Not familiar with Masta Ace or Scarface's earlier works so can't really speak on how they compare relatively to the rest of their catalog, but these four are all great albums. I'm more of a Long Hot Summer person myself, though.

and honestly I didn't love Ace when he first started with the Juice Crew.

I liked him but he was certainly a notch below Kane & G. Rap.

Disposable Arts is my favorite album of his career.

It really is a very, very, very good album. The ONLY reason it isn't among their best is because they have so many classics in their catalogue, you can't really put it in the "De La's best" conversation. But that album in many other artists' discography is among the best for sure.

But yea --- as to Grind Date discussion specifically, it was such a pleasant surprise. I didn't know what to expect from them following the AOI series, 15+ years in the game, etc., but they really came thru. A nice, concise, consistent effort from one of the genre's best.

Evolve is dope
Marco laced the title track
Clap is dope
Black Hand Side is dope
Diamond laced Shine
Hallie Salacie Karate is dope
Hitman and Assassins are raw
The Grand Illusion is nice
And the closer with Jilly is good production.

Not sure what people are looking for.

I'm not sure either is a cemented 'great' album tho objectively.

I thought about it though but in the end, like Sir Lucious Leftfoot, I left it off.

Love the first Chamber Music joint too but I can't in good conscience consider it a true Wu album.

Really wanted to crowbar Moment of Truth in there but it missed the cut by 6-9 months or so.

Madvillian count?

Just because he's made better albums shouldn't change whether or not it was great or not. It's still better than a lot of the other great albums mentioned and cosigned in this thread. Just goes to show the amount of quality albums Big Boi has made or been a part of.

I said in the original post, the album had to be mentioned with the artists best output.

So I'm not saying some of these albums aren't great, I'm just saying relative to their earlier work they're not as good.

This post is about measuring artists who not only didn't fall off but even managed to release one of *their* best albums late in their career.

People are not satisfied with dope beats and dope rhymes any more.

Thats what the first one essential is.

You can make a case that RZAs nack for making cohesive albums with the skits sets the first one apart but at the end of the day, those are just skits.

By no means am I saying the second is on the same level because its almost impossible to compete with the nostalgia factor and the first is in my top 10 of all-time.

But if someone dropped the first one today, there would be plenty of people claiming it is just "ok" or calling it overrated.

People's perspectives are all fucked up in 2013. They don't even know what they want and rate albums with cliche talking points that they read on their favorite hip-hop website.

People go into albums looking for ways to either like or dislike it and the sad part about it is that the opinion they're aiming for is based on whether or not they want to be different than the majority's opinion or if hey want to latch on to the majority's opinion in order to satisfy their own need of makin themselves feel validated.

Whilst dude is not necessarily prolific, these were both a good 10 or so years after Funcrusher Plus.

Atmosphere's When Life gives you lemons You Paint That Shit Gold (Overcast! came out in 1997)

Cunninlynguists Oneirology was released 10 years after Will Rap for Food, and I reckon it's probably their second best project.

Not sure if anyone else would include it, but Distant Relatives with Nas and Damian Marley was exceedingly good, but whether it would be included right up there in his discography is another matter.

Agree with the Fishscale, American Gangster and Trophies

esp if you inculde those season eps and the free mixtape that came out that year they was on a Damn creative peak right there esp with Felt 2 and you can't imagine how much fun we having they hit a late carrer peak.

great album I still say its the 3rd best release but APOS and dirty acres are classics to me.

updated production but let's keep it real, Uncle Ricky never fell off lyrically. Dude could still make a great album today if he linked up with the right producers.
