the story about him getting voted out for David's return and then David fucking it up and getting kicked right back out for Dennis...LMMFAO.

apparantely Eddie wasn't feeling Dennis either. i think the common denominator here is that Eddie was kind of an ass.

we laud Smokey's writings and Norman's productions, but Barrett Strong is SO underrated. i didn't even realize how deep his contribution was. silly me. dude wrote some of the best songs ever composed.

from wiki...

In the mid 1960s, Strong became a Motown writer lyricist, teaming with producer Norman Whitfield. Together, Strong and Whitfield wrote some of the most successful and critically acclaimed soul songs ever to be released by Motown, including "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by both Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips; "War" by Edwin Starr; "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by The Undisputed Truth; and the long line of "psychedelic soul" records by The Temptations, including "Cloud Nine", "I Can't Get Next to You", "Psychedelic Shack", "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)", and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", amongst others. Strong received a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1973 for "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone". Strong and Whitfield also co-wrote the ballad "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)", a 1971 Billboard No. 1 that also marked the last Temptations single to feature charter members Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.

as for how important Barrett Strong was - just listen to the difference between "Ball ofConfusion" and "Papa was a Rolling Stone" and say "Masterpiece" or even "Car Wash" or "I Wanna Get Next to You" as far as the lyrics go.

Gold vs. garbage.

I could see that if he came to the company during the LA period, but how the hell is that even possible in the Hitsville era?

possible.

Otis was the one who did the most dealing with Gordy.

But I assure you - especially with the Tempts being their second biggest act, and all of the Copa shit and TV shit, Edward James Kendrick and Berry Gordy Jr/III laid eyes on each other more than three times. Probably more than three times _in a week_ during the Tempts' first trip to the Copa in 1967.

amount of issues as far as being able to get what she wanted before Stevie got his post-adolescence contract done.

After Berry and Diana broke up, and certainly after the making of "Mahogany", things began to sour for her too.

that's why he and Otis went at it so bad, because Eddie (and David before him) wanted an independent accounting of the group's finances (Motown of course had its own accountants crunching the numbers) and Otis said no.

Eddie proposed the Tempts go on strike. Otis said no.

So Eddie eventually got out of the group and went solo. After he left Motown (by signing away all of his future royalties, mind you), he had nothing but evil things to say about Berry Gordy.

I agree with eddie kendricks about not brownnosing gordy and not just going along with everything that he says even though its wrong because im sure a lot of motown artists did that and it gave gordy the power to screw people.
