geez you remove the rapping on these sparse, sophomoric productions nowadays and they completely implode. now, i don't want to date myself... but remember when a rap instrumental utilized a great song via sampling and could sound like this?

That album still sounds great and KRS was rapping his ass off. Friend is one of the stand outs too. That beat is greatness. It swings and is emotive while being the very definition of boom bap

i'm well beyond concepts like "boom-bap" but i agree with your sentiment. i would say it's a song i would list that was BETTER than the original record it sampled. adding the drums and isolating that one part really worked as it was enough to carry a 3+ minute song without it getting dull... i don't particularly like the original krs song that much. but the beat is ridiculous though. it's one of my fav. jazz samples in rap music besides beatnuts - props over here, black moon - who the got the props & common sense - resurrection.

Lotta great beats in 2012 man
Southern style 130-160bpm production is the new Boom Bap.. as has been said before on the boards..
Lotta dope shit that people are doing with samples these days... Skrillex vocal chops... clams casino chopped and screwed layers.. etc...
all these pop records from Kesha and Katy are hip hop ideas on steriods anyway... the dynamics and variation in those beats are crazy..
Not to mention all the EDM stuff coming out i.e. TNGHT, UZI, LVD PVCK etc....
Production game as a whole is incredibly innovative right now... They just realized they don't need a "rapper" to succeed.. lol
