"Rapper's Delight>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Good Times"

Microphone Fiend>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>School Boy Crush

It Was A Good Day>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Footsteps In The Dark

Many more but you get the gist, feel free to throw out further examples of your own on that side if you wish.

However I'm really trying to think if there's any disco cut that wasn't later made a more effective record in its looped-up-and-spit-on rap single incarnation.

They must exist but coming up empty this morning.

I might even like 'Freaks Of The Industry' better than 'Love To Love Ya Baby' tho likely that's the minority viewpoint (RIP Donna Summer/Congrats On The R&RHOF Induction) but since that was an album track it doesn't fit the requirements anyway.

Whatdya youse think?

Kids who weren't even born before the riots & think of Cube as an actor can recite that line for line.

and that chord/time change that comes on in chorus, and the vocal harmonies in the chorus

and tell me all that pales in comparison to "My dick runs deep, so deep, so deep put her ass to sleep"

...well, I don't think I want you living in my neighborhood.

already name for you at some point.

I snuck 'made a more effective record' in there for that very reason as my out.

'Good Day' was a monster, iconic song much more so than the song it's music sprang from whether you personally enjoy it or not.

It's still played regularly twenty years later, meanwhile I'd have to play GTA4 to hear Footsteps.

be something other than an add-nothing-nay-sayin-chorus-of-music-nerdom, then holla with some actual input instead of getting hung up on one example (of which there's a solid argument for) you disagree with and giving crusty-ass co-signs.

no, they were just terrible examples, I actually do know what disco is even if I didn't necessarily display said knowledge here (and by the way, I'm a fan but Average White Band is real *borderline* as a true 'funk' band, next thing you know Tower Of Power & then next thing you know Chicago is trying to act like they really drop the sticky-icky just 'cause they had some damn horns). But yeah, it ain't really 'disco' at all. Just wanted to show 'Microphone Fiend' love.

Speaking of Disco, where the legendary OKP of the same name been at?

so y'all can find something new & shiny to play with in here anyway rather than fixating any further.

Full disclosure, wrote this post with the other two in mind this morning (heard 'Good Times' while grabbing my morning coffee) and was loooking to throw a third example in but couldn't back DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince 'Ring My Bell' too tough so went with that one.

In terms of a hit record (and not some fluke hit, a memorable joint with staying power) it certainly supercedes.

but that's not really a "disco" record (if you're stringent) but it is one of those joints that I think you'd have to be well versed in P-Funk to know since it was on the last Parliament album (which IMO ain't one of their best, certainly ain't seeing the one right before it). it bangs, but not like "Knee Deep" and "One Nation Under A Groove" did for Funkadelic, or any of the Parliament hits in the '70s.

but "Humpty Dance" is definitely one of the most "recite every verse" tracks in the genre, not to mention its beat was probably sampled more than any rap song to date. in the early '90s there was like a cult surrounding that beat (esp. in R&B)

One of my favorite Parliament-cuts even if I think it sounds more like a Rubber Band-cut. At that time, I don't think it mattered to George at all; I think he grabbed anything that was lying around which explains why he fell off as an ''album-act''-much of th appeal of the earlier Parliament albums was their thematic consistency. And even the more ''messy'' Funkadelic-brand got too inconsistent as well:does anyone think ''Freak of the week'' or ''Uncle Jam'' or even ''Knee Deep'' (¤they snuck a guitarsolo in there though) sound like the post-Hendrix funk rock synonymous with that brand?

''Humpty dance'' is dope too though, I just don't think there's much point in comparing...

You are comparing the ''effectiveness'' (not quality) of:

*a fan favorite vs. a massive MTv crosover-hit

*a fairly obscure cut mainly known today for being sampled a gazillion time vs. one of the top 5 songs by a rapper many consider the GOAT.

*an undeniably huge disco hit which ''effectiveness' was blunted by being ripped off twice for two big hits within a year of its release vs a song that-erroneously or not-is considered the first rap-record...

Fail...

As usual, you are freely mixing subjective and objective statements in a careless and inconsistent manner. For example, ''freaks of the industry' is better to you than the Summer-cut. However, when someone says they prefer ''footsteps...'', then it becomes ''ask the dj''. How does that make sense?

In response to Reply # 41

Footsteps In The Dark, while a popular song in its own right, would not have needed single-status.

Tone made a better point about it being a disco song at all, which was an actually more legitimate gripe & I agreed we can toss it.

...it was barely implied and it makes the whole premise of the thread skimpy.

Whatever, in order for a disco-song to have the efficiency of a later rap-song, it must be popular still, right?

Anyway, I still hear Cheryl Lynn's '' To be real'' and EMotions ''Best of my love'' regularly. Both these songs have been sampled a lot and none of the songs that sampled them have been as effective.

Otherwise, most of the still ''effective'' disco-songs have barely been sampled at all to my knowledge, at least not by ''credible'' rappers so I don't get it. Disco sucks? Is that the point?

''However I'm really trying to think if there's any disco cut that wasn't later made a more effective record in its looped-up-and-spit-on rap single incarnation.''

So now the rap-song must have been a hit as well? *SMH* Doesn't that imply that it would be more effective in the now since the efficiency of various songs is very much a generational thing...

it's amazing the lengths y'all go to try to debate over minutiae rather than just play along or pass.

This wasn't some assault on disco as a music forum or battle-tested thesis, this was me asking an open-ended question since at 8:30 this morning I couldn't think of an example myself that fit that criteria.

We're now about 70 posts in without a clear-cut nominee either.

Loleatta Hallaway's ''Love sensation''>>>Marky mark's ''good vibrations''

Bee Gees ''Staying alive''>>>Wyclef

Sister Sledge ''He's the greatest dancer''>>>Will Smith ''Gettin' Jiggy with it''

Seriously, I'm drawing blanks on ''effective'' (as opposed to obscure) disco-songs sampled in credible Hip-hop hits...

for some reason that song's a velveeta-cheese-guilty-pleasure, with the 'Top Billin' part & Forte's Liquid-Cocaine-Flow on there.

But yes 'Stayin Alive' works.

oh yeah, I've got lots of disco cuts I like, obviously it's not my forte to the degree rap music is because I didn't grow along with its genesis or immerse myself in it with the same degree of passion/persistence.

I have a hard time saying a song is better when it's basically a straight rip off, but I do
like HBFS. I like Cola Bottle for listening and HBFS for shit like working out. Always interesting
to me which one people choose and why.

I really like the bridge... the "Oh when you look in her eyes" part. Also I love how live and yet at the same time "futuristic" it sounds while HBFS sounds robotic (don't mean it in a bad way at all).

I agree with SW that DP really boiled down the track to its most powerful essence, though.

too much creativity....too much muciscianship went into those originals to put a song that simply sampled that greatness ahead of it...

I mean the rhythm guitar on school boy crush.... it honestly didn't take a genius to that....

playing something great...and hearing that something someone else did was great aren't the same level of greatness
