ALBUMS OF THE YEAR (RANDOM)
Fiona Apple, Long ass Title. - Her best album, nobody bleed emotion out on wax like this at all this year...It's the Miseducation of Artsy White Chicks.
Action Bronson, Blue Chips. - Fatman had a great year, this was his best. Rare Chandeliers might have been a more cohesive work, but this was much more playful and Bronson was much more on point.
Actress, R.I.P. - Beautiful and Haunting. In a year where EDM got LOUDER, its quiet and pretty. What FlyLo tried to do, but not as boring, lol.
Chief Keef, Back from the Dead. - Controversy aside, it's great, hard hitting, and cut very much from the 'pure aggression' waka flocka lane that opened up since Waka decided to get soft.
Converge, All We Love We Leave Behind. - Fucking.Brutal.
Death Grips, No Love Deep Web. - Closest anyone's come to the fury of classic P.E. Seems alot of the cool kids love the other LP the released this year 'The Money Store' better...but this record is leaner, meaner, and a purer interpretation of the sound I think they are going for.
Bosse De Nage, III. - 90's alt rock Slint meets black metal; saddest sounding record this year.
El-P/Killer Mike, Cancer For Cure & Rap Music. - I loved seeing Killer Mike expand to a new and well deserved audience, and El-P is the fucking shit.
Rick Ross, Rich Forever. - We forgot but this 'mixtape' had the first half of 2012 on lock till the album pissed the good will away. I put mixtape in quotes because with the guests/production/mastering
Frank Ocean, Channel Orange. - What can I say? He deserved this year.
Tame Impala, Lonerism. - Makes me want to rent out a brand new car, a dog, and the prettiest JC Penny model to sit next to me, and drive a cross country trip like they have in those car commercials. Pop gets alot of flack, but it's fucking hard as shit writing catchy songs...these guys have two albums worth now and they just started.
Gucci Man, Trap Back. - It's pretty cool that in 2012 where Trap became the biggest buzzword in music that Gucci got his shit together and came back to his senses to reclaim his throne. He dropped 3 great mixtapes and this was the best; not a clunker in the bunch...including my favorite sample flip of the year (the Tetris theme song). Plus I find it hilarious that he refused to call 2 Chains by his new name on the multiple features he's on..Tity Boy forever.
Nas, Life Is Good. - Im still a hater, but this was his best work in a decade.
Miguel, Kaladascope Dream. - Pretty as hell. Lot's of words have been written about r&b breaking out of it's malaise
Pallbearer, Sorrow and Extinction. - The beauty of Black Sabbath, screwed.
Schoolboy Q, Habits and Contradictions. - TDE had a Wu-Tang golden era year, but this was their best. Classic cali gangsterism, but grown up and fucking fun.
Ty Segall, Slaughterhouse. - Ahh, the pure joy of garage rock. Now Jack White is stuck all the way up his own ass, welcome your new king. He dropped like 3 projects this year, all worth copping, but this is the best.
Swans, The Seer. - When we all die on 12/21/2012, this will be the soundtrack.
----------- YEAR'S BEST REISSUES
Weekend, Trilogy. - Nice to have 3 hours of date rape and overdose music in one package.
William Basinski, Disintergration Tapes. - After we all die on 12/21/2012, this is what will be playing on an old radio on loop.
Sleep, Dopesmoker. - *Takes off shirt, plugs guitar in amp, turns volume to 11*
------------ SINGLES OF THE YEAR
Song of the year: Zebra Katz, Imma Read. - In a perfect world this would singlehandedly kickstart a new hip-house revolution. Makes me want to be in a house club, no AC, grinding against a coked up dancer/actress/singer/Dallas BBQ waitress.
Runner Up: Nigganigganigganigga don't believe me? Just watch.
------------
WORST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR
Lupe Fiasco, Food and Liquor II: Pandering Pussy Music. LOL@ you clowns ever thinking he was good. Worst case of mediocre rap music made to seem good because it's conscious, he's like B.O.B. but without the sense of fun, songwriting, and intelligence.
2 Chains, Based on a Tru Story. Disappointing. Outside of the first few tracks, this fails....it should have been an album full of club jams but compared to lets say Meek Mill or Future...not even close. His features were better then this whole record this year.
Chief Keef, Finally Rich. - Considering how low he started, it's kind of an accomplishment he got worse in the 10 months between the mixtape and album.
Rick Ross, God Forgives. - Still probably the best mainstream rapper as far as quality is concerned, but after years of dropping multiple quality releases a year he probably needs to slow down and just focus on the albums...he spread himself too thin.
