for me it's "That's Them" by a landslide. "The Interview", "Ingredients to Time Travel" and OMG...this: Shawn J...God bless you for this beat

They're both 4.5 to me.

Classic 90s hip-hop right there.

The production was better. Cult classic shit right there. The second album was a bit of a disappointment to me personally because I waited three years for it and it wasn't bangin'. The beats just didn't move me.

It gets favored due to the moment in my life when I was listening. I was rocking this in the background during college.

Production is sick as well.

quintessential hip-hop IMO

lurkin since 1999. werd.

it's not bad, exactly, but it always struck me as run-of-the-mill rappity-rap. now that i think about it, that was probably one of the albums that crystalized how pointless underground east coast boom bap had become. especially considering how much great other stuff was coming out at the time that didn't suffer from being rooted in bland purism:

biggie
jay
wu
mobb
outkast
fugees
CNN
bad boy
co flow
ugk

seriously, that's them was nowhere near the best material released in 97. album was boring to me. Not a fan of Shawn J Period's production either. Buckwild and T-Ray held it down on the first album. Along with Reggie's cut.

maybe because most promo records were coming on vinyl and that was on a CD? whatever the case, it never crossed my mind that it was anything more than background noise. there was so much dope shit coming out then.

And it wasn't that good of an album, but it had some really nice highlights. I enjoyed the listen then, and probably will the next time I check it out. (if ever?)

(I used to rock it all the time when it first dropped)

OC - Jewelz
Wu - Forever
CNN - War Report
Muggs - Soul Assassin
Soul In The Hole Soundtrack
Jay - Vol 1
Flush - Ghetto Millionaire

97 was the turning point to me and I really wasn't rocking with the extra glossy Bad Boy shit. I only liked half of Biggie so I really didn't see it as a classic album.

I will say that at the time, That's Them was just another album but when I listen to it now, I like it much more. It is exactly what Phonte said, dope beats and dope rhymes.

I love the debut as well but some 93-94 albums at times sound dated and that's one of them to me.

True it was the turning point but it also depends on what you like. The year Bad Boy took over but i liked them Bad Boy records. Royal Flush, CRU, Wu-Tang Clan, Mood, Common, Camp Lo, Company Flow, Busta Rhymes, Killarmy and Twista all got play from me. 1998 is another story.

Those two are dope as well. But overall, 97 was a drop off from 96, 95, and 94 for me.
