I think Blueprint, which I like, is the most overrated album of all-time in hip-hop.

Jay has never amazed me lyrically. A lot of songs on Blueprint get the skip button, Takeover (so does Ether), Izzo, Girls Girls Girls, Jigga That N, and Hola Hovito.

I mean, that is a lot of damn joints that get skipped for an album wih 13 tracks.

The Black Album just doesn't really have the highs for me. It's pretty even throughout but nothing that I would consider Jays best work.

Vol 1...minus Girls Like, Sunshine, and Face Off would be his best to me because everything else is very very strong.

In my opinion;

Illmatic
It Was Written
Reasonable Doubt
Life Is Good
Vol 1

But if we're counting Distant Relatives and Lost Tapes, that list changes.

That's strong. It's one of my personal favorites.

I love Takeover. Think it works much better as a song than Ether, while Ether I guess was more effective as a diss. I still think Takeover has more "ether" than Ether. Jigga That N, I actually like this track, but it should be on BP2, not Blueprint. It sticks out like a sore thumb regardless of the quality, good or bad. Izzo and Girls Girls Girls I love, even though I HATED GGG when I first heard it. Hola Hovito isn't skippable either, but definitely on the bottom of the list if I were to rank all the songs on the album.

>I mean, that is a lot of damn joints that get skipped for an
>album wih 13 tracks.

I'd say I only skip 1 (Jigga That N) only on the basis of it not fitting the rest of the vibe. I usually turn it off after Renegade and don't listen to the last track, though the bonus tracks tackled on afterward I really like.

Really? 99 Problems, Dirt of Your Shoulder, Lucifer, Encore, What More Can I Say, PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT! Those are hell of highs for me, but you're not a Jay fan so I can see why those don't hit you.

Bottom 5 in Jay's discog for me. Don't really feel any of the Volumes, actually.

I don't think so. People list is as the best hip-hop album of the decade and I've seen it higher than the Illmatics and 36s and Doggystyles on some lists.

I always hear this "it's the better song" bullshit. another classic Jay plea coppage. Fuck a song...we're battling on this bitch! LOL. Plus the song was more etherous to Prodigy than nas. if people were really honest and broke down everything Nas said about Jay and what Jay said about Nas on those two songs, there is no way possible ANYone could say Takeover was more "etherous". If I hear one more time about someone cherry picking Ether for the "fag" line then I will slap the shit out of someone LOL. People love to see what they want. But like I said, I don't like either of those tracks, Takeover or Ether.

And try to be honest with me here, if Nas made Izzo or Girls, Girls, Girls or Nasir That N, or Hola Hovito, how much hate woould he get? Honestly now. These are the double standards that are so crazy to me.

Nah, those songs are cool. I especially like Encore minus the bad singing because I love that beat. PSA is cool but again, overrated. Those verses are average at best. See, the thing with me, is when I hear Nas bust down a song like Nasty, or Take It In Blood or do an ill ass concept like The Black Bond or I Gave You Power...that is the shit that gets me. I hear The Black Bond and say "only Nas would do some shit like this and make it sound this fresh" Jay never does that for me. Anyone could've been on PSA as far as I'm concerned. the beat and the opening line did all the work and the rest is forgettable. I rocks with it though for sure.

You are wildin' my man. A Million and One, Imaginary Players, Streets Is Watching, Friend or Foe 98, Lucky Me, Who You Wit, Real N*, Where I'm From, Rap Game/Crack Game, You Must Love Me...That is is CLASSIC shit right there pal.

But see, that goes to my theory on Jay's fans and why they like him. They have different values in their hip-hop. You can rock with Izzo and Girls and Hovito but the album with those joints I just listed is in his bottom 5.

LOL

In 2001 I cared about what was the better DISS track. But in 2012, when I put on Blueprint or Stillmatic, I care about what's the better song. I will say that for every good diss he had on Ether he had a corny, what-the-fuck-does-that-even-mean line.

Nas sounds out of place when raps about shit like that, cause it's not him. Jay has made a career out of club songs and tracks for broads. Most of the time Nas tries that shit he fails. Jay can makes songs with style and little substance but when Nas tries it just sounds awkward. I'll prob get clowned for saying this, but I see it this way. The artist behind the song DOES have an influence on whether I like or dislike the song. Like, if Talib Kweli dropped "In Da Club" I'd prob listen to it sideways, and if Chingy made "6th Sense" it would probably throw me off. I can't listen to Nas rap about bitches and popping champagne in the club because I feel like he's the kind of dude that can't pick up women and would wear timbs trying to get into the VIP room. If Nas made "Girls Girls Girls" I'd be thinking "Yeah fucking right"

There's the thing, and a common complain for Nas. Jay-Z can pick a banger of a beat like that and let it carry him, Nas can rarely pick a god damn beat that that hits the second is drops. Beats like Made U Look are hard to come by in Nas' recent discography.

Could be an age thing (I'm 24, my first Jay-Z album was Vol. 3, and I prefer post-2000 Jay to pre-2000), but to me I'm not feeling the production on Vol. 1 and it gets even worse on Vol. 2. I have a feeling if I was old enough to be a hip hop fan from 96-97, I would have loved RD then listened to Vol. 1 like WTF is this shit?

That we look to different artists for different things. Much of your opinions below (I picked out the points I'm specifically referring to), a lot of which I agree with, are hinged on "if Nas made that song how much hate would he get" or "Jay could never make a track like Nasty"...again, both of which I agree with.

But the overarching point in all the below (which are popular opinions regardless of whether people actually like or dislike either artist or love both), to me at least, is that I don't really look to Nas for chick tracks like "Girls, Girls, Girls" or party songs like "Hola Hovito", just like I don't look to Jay for concept music like "I Gave You Power" or lyrical clinics like "Nasty". They are both great in their own right, IMO, but I think that due to the fact that they are terminally intertwined in our minds because of the battle, we seem to constantly forget and/or neglect the fact that they really are two entirely different artists with incredibly different strengths and weaknesses, and I think they are both great at what it is they individually do. Jay, to me, is a more-talented "party rapper" for lack of a better term, who makes songs for clubs and parties far more often than he focuses on crafting artistic statements for albums. He can rhyme his ass off but doesn't have a whole lot to say. He just finds a million interesting ways to tell you the same thing. His songs are hits because he picks the right producers/beats and has a distinguishable voice to go alone with his good-to-great lyrics. Nas, on the other hand, is an MC's MC who tried and failed at making JayZ-style party hits, but when he stays in his lane makes amazing music. He is a mega, mega-talented lyricist who can write circles around just about everyone in the game. His songs are crafted around the lyrics, and rightfully so, and when he sticks to his lane he really can't be messed with when it comes to straight up lyrics. A true ghetto poet.

And it's clear that you're not a huge JayZ fan, which is fine, not everyone is...but I find it hard to believe that you actually believe it when you say "anyone could hop on PSA and do what Jay did". I mean, like him or not, you have to admit that he's stuck around as long as he has for SOME reason, even if the reason or reasons are things that you admittedly don't look for in your hip-hop. Again, it's fine, but to deny that the man has talent and has been great in the lane he's chosen is dishonest, I think.

I like Jay for what he is. But if what he is, is an MC who makes pop hits and so he for ladies, what makes him different than a Drake or a Nelly or whoever? That's my issue with the whole though thing because Jay fans act like be is something he isn't. So while I like Jay and a lot of his music, I can't help but think while I'm listening "this dude is not as nice as people say he is". And usually people who don't give a fuck about hip-hop and people whose only credibility is saying Big and Pac are the best ever are the ones who ride with this "Jay is the greatest of all time" bullshit.

I don't think it's dishonest at all. Take away Jays larger than life image and tell me that someone like Pusha couldn't have rocked the shit out of that beat.

Like I said, I'm cool liking Jay for what he is. Reasonable Doubt, Vol 1, Blueprint, Black Album, American Gangter are all dope to me.

Well, to answer your first question, what makes him different from a Drake or a Nelly, is that he is way more talented on the mic than either of them. And again, if his music isn't your style, that's one thing, but I don't think anyone can deny his talent (I'm not 100% sure that you *are* denying it, but you're walking a fine line haha).

>I don't think it's dishonest at all. Take away Jays larger

>have rocked the shit out of that beat.

Right --- I was more or less making a general statement more than referring to that specific song, it's just that you named it so I used it as my example. I'm not saying that Jay is the *only* one who could rock that beat, there's a ton of rappers I'd love to hear on it ... my larger point was that it sounded to me like you were saying that anyone can do what Jay does. And to me, *that's* dishonest just because, well, if they could, then why haven't they? I tend to agree that Jay *talked* his way into being the best rapper alive more than he rapped his way into it (in other words he convinced people that he is by saying it a lot, rather than just by proving it on the mic)...but at the same time, even the fact that he was able to TALK his way into it says something. And if his rhymes weren't good, he wouldn't have been ABLE to talk his way into it. Know what I'm saying? Like, there's been 1000 MCs who have talked and bragged as much as Jay, but only one who's got to the level he's at. So there's gotta be something there.

And it started on City Is Mine, which at the end of the day, is the epitome of Jays career and personality.

While Puff made Ill Be Missing You and Lox made We'll Always Love Big Poppa, Jay took the opportunity to talk about himself and his position as king.

Which is actually pretty sad and disrespectful.

And ever since then he has been feeding hip-hop fans his belief of being the King of NY.

He's not bad by any means and has always been able to make a hit by bein second in line whether is was with the drug lord talk, the gloss of 97, the Swizz fame of 98, the Timbo fame of 99, or the Tunes fame of 00. He has always made the right record at the right time. Which is great and the smart thing to do.

But when we are talking about lyricists, artists, classics, he just doesn't have that in my opinion. And I like the dude for what he is.

It just so happens that the masses relate more to what Jay stands for than other MCs. He's a business man first. They want what he has. They want to live his life and he slaps them in the face on every song talking about what he has and what they don't.

I could write a damn book on the psychology behind this shit lol

And it came equipped with one of the most uninspired and poorly executed musical productions I've heard, even with Nas' low standards in mind.

There are, indeed, worse beats that exist (which are easily and conveniently found on a number of Soulja Boy produced joints)

However, has there ever been more of a need for a hard beat for someone who can quite literally call upon any producer he wishes for the most important song of his life? This is the same man who has DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Q Tip begging to work with him again. This is the man that brought you one of the most musically complete albums in Hip Hop.

And he chose what is now known as the Ether Instrumental.

It has to be the worst with all these things considered.

In response to Reply # 0

was actually lies.

"Went from, Nasty Nas to Esco's trash
Had a spark when you started but now you're just garbage'

As much as Nas wasn't at his peak then he did do "Let My N*ggas Live", "Self Conscience", "Queen's Day", "B EZ", "Show Discipline", "Live From The Bridge" all around that that time. Which are far from terrible verses, even if he did get lazy on other songs he was dropping heat when he wanted to.

"Fell from top ten to not mentioned at all"

-He was nominated for lyricist and artist of the year at The Source awards in 2000. 2001 it'd been 2 years since his last album and laying low all around so he probably wasn't the most talked about name.

"to your bodyguard's "Oochie Wally" verse better than yours
Matter fact you had the worst flow on the whole fuckin song"

-But everybody still knows every word when it comes on in the club

"but I know - the sun don't shine, then son don't shine"

-b/c Jay-z wasn't all over The Dynasty? Got it

"That's why your - LAAAAAAAME! - career come to a end"

-11 years later and stronger than ever

"There's only so long fake thugs can pretend
N*gga; you ain't live it you witnessed it from your folks pad
You scribbled in your notepad and created your life"

-So I guess you were really flying planes full of coke then Jay-z right?

"I showed you your first tec on tour with Large Professor
(Me, that's who!) Then I heard your album bout your tec on the dresser"

-Have no idea about this one so no comment.

"So yeah I sampled your voice, you was usin it wrong
You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song"

-Ummmmm I may be going out on limb here but "The World Is Yours" is a better song than "Dead Presidents I or II". And that's not even counting when he sampled "Represent" on "Rap Game/Crack Game" which was isn't even a contest.

"And you ain't get a coin nigga you was gettin fucked and
I know who I paid God, Serchlite Publishing"

-Who owns Reasonable Doubt then Jay?

"Use your - BRAAAAAAAIN! You said you been in this ten
I've been in it five - smarten up Nas"

-Well if Nas is using "Live At The BBQ" (His first appearance on record) as his starting point should you too Jay-z? If you don't want to use "Hawaiian Sophie" (1989/12 years) at least use "It's That Simple"/"The Originators" (1990/11 years).

"Four albums in ten years n*gga? I can divide
That's one every let's say two, two of them shits was doo"

-Well sure Nas had only 4 solo albums by that point but also 2 other collaborative albums as well. So although math might not hard for you, history clearly is. And really? The guy who released IML Vol 3 is going to call "I Am..." doo? Ok just checking.

"One was - NAHHH, the other was "Illmatic"
That's a one hot album every ten year average"

-Umm again might be going out on a limb but seriously IWW is better than anything Jay-z released inbetween RB & BP. IWW, I Am & N all sold well (All went platinum), only Nastradumas got bad reviews and if we're just going by hip hop head's opinions I think they'd sooner side with Nas than Jay. Especially since like I pointed out before Jay had actually been in the game 11 or 12 yrs and had only released two hot albums himself.

"And that's so - LAAAAAAAME! N*gga switch up your flow
Your shit is garbage, but you try and kick knowledge?
(Get the fuck outta here) You n*ggaz gon' learn to respect the king"

-The guy who's notorious for dumbing down his rhymes is trying to call him out for only trying to kick knowledge? ok

"Don't be the next contestant on that Summer Jam screen
Because you know who (who) did you know what (what)
with you know who (yeah) but just keep that between me and you for now"

-OOOh you mean you were so desperate for his attention and respect that he had to go after his baby mama. You stud you, no wonder you went after Superhead too. You wanted everyone's respect and attention

is that Jay tried to put that shit out as absolute fact to prove that he was > Nas and he came with a bunch of nonsense.

He does that a lot though. "Men lie, women lie, numbers don't" ...foh

that The Takeover was nothing but a bitter Nas fan airing out their grievances. To me regardless of who you think is a better rapper, you can't argue that Jay didn't come with some bs with that verse and "Super Ugly" was even worse. You may like one song over the other but doesn't make it any truer

>that The Takeover was nothing but a bitter Nas fan airing out

because the gist of Jay's verse about Nas was basically what angry rap fans let down by IWW because it wasn't "Illmatic Pt. 2" had been saying for years.

This thread is one thing, that's kind of funny, but the fact that people are STILL trying to debate the merits of Takeover vs Ether, in earnest, at this stage of the game? Why don't we dig into the Bush v. Gore decision while we're at it...

Kendrick Lamar cares about whether or not his album is the
GOAT

ASAP rocky cares about whether or not his single is good, or not.

(neither care about these *specific* conversations, but they
certainly care about the topic)

Nas doesn't give a fuck about a point by point breakdown of the
lies told on 'Takeover'

Neither does Jay

Neither should you

I'm on team Nas, btw

But your post was awful

You legitimize all the things that people say about Nas fans,
how sensitive they are

Good god

Literally nobody cares about any of that

It has nothing to do with who won or that I hate Jay-z (Which I don't) just the fact that ppl still think that Jay-z's verse was a great diss (Regardless if we are comparing it to any other song). Although harsh it's far from good hard hitting points, hence why it only made Nas stronger. If you don't care that's fine, but to act that b/c it's old or you don't care we shouldn't discuss things is dumb.

and I found it kind of ironic that Jay approached Nas like "the angry internet poster who was mad that IWW wasn't Illmatic" in any case. Jay-Z. The unflappable hustler man turned mogul.

Which I think I like more than this version but still anything is a step up from that original beat. I think the fact that some many ppl can look past the beat says how hard Nas hit lyrically.

I thought it was amateurish, borderline "cheap"

but the bassline was "effective" to use the ?uest term
then after hearing it on the radio and out of other people's cars I was like, "fuggit... it is what it is"

and the first time I heard the "Negro Please" line I just died laughing

Nas is not ever really that funny as an MC, but he was on Stillmatic
