People were justifiably frustrated by him after one sub-par and one truly abysmal album. When "The Ecstatic" came out, some people who used to love him had given up. Plus it was a full decade after his prime? Big surprise that his audience had shrunk. But that doesn't equal hate. To me, it's a natural response to a dude who took forever between releasing projects that weren't that good... yet people (who heard it) STILL dug "The Ecstatic."
In short, when he makes good music, people still love Mos - even after he changed his name (shades of Prince's insane period) and semi-gave up music for acting, which historically makes heads angry (see also: Andre 3000) and spent literally TEN YEARS making shit albums or no music at all...
