"A must listen for all Prince fans, The Music Snobs Prince podcast #2"

Hey Lessonheads

I think many of you will really enjoy these podcasts. Older Lessonheads will remember Jehan as one of the contributors. He has gotten together with three of his friends (who between them have written for Vibe and XXL magazines) Isaac, Scoop, and Arthur and put together a superb and very entertaining, informative, etc podcast talk show under the guise of The Music Snobs. They've just posted up the second of their Prince episodes and I think the Lesson will dig the shows

check part two here http://themusicsnobs.com/post/36585924924/tms008

In Part 2 of the double-album/double-episode, the snobs continue to discuss the details of Prince’s iconic career, with a special focus on the three albums that constitute the peak of his creativity: Sign O’ the Times, The Black Album, and Lovesexy. So download it, stream it, and shut up, already—DAMN.

check part one here http://themusicsnobs.com/post/34366768683/tms007

What else is there to say? 2 episodes. 1 icon. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the release of **1999**, The Music Snobs cover PRINCE. Scoop, Isaac, Jehan, and Arthur discuss, debate, and snob-alert their way through a double-episode of Prince’s hits, proteges, girlfriends, b-sides, concerts, masterpieces, and unreleased songs. It’s gonna be a beautiful night…

enjoy !

i appreciate the fact that the idea of him being the greatest artist who's ever lived was met with the casual acceptance that it deserves.

it's a notion that should be examined. i've said it for years.

wait until he dies and everything is put into context. it's a legit question.

and they were talking about EVER, by the way...not the modern era. EVER.

I'm more of a fan of their show than of P, but they make great points. I ended up watching that "Guitar Gently Weeps" performance like, 3 times after hearing this week's Ep.

Technically proficient for sure, and not without some degree of soul either... definitely enjoyable in its own way... but nothing I'm gonna piss my pants over, y'know? It's the kind of thing I expect from some Santana tribute band playing at the local bar.

(In any case, I've said a couple of times that I admire Prince much more as a rhythm guitarist than as a lead shredder)

But more than that, I was bothered that it seemed disrespectful. When you're playing a tribute to someone and you make it all about YOU to that extent... The shit just looks mad tacky.

I know this is rock & roll and this is Prince. There's gonna be some ego involved; everybody on that stage probably cared about looking cool just as much as they cared about George Harrison (maybe more)... but I think P took it too far. The stage moves, the falling down, the throwing the guitar... dude, this ain't your concert, man. Just play George's song, play it well and get the fuck out. And people love to point out that while Tom Petty kinda grimaced, that Dhani Harrison seemed to be enjoying it.... that may be the case. Hell, maybe if George were around he would have enjoyed it too. But it looked really corny and in poor taste to me.

So you want Prince to show up, and not be Prince, so you can complain about how he wasn't Prince? You are talking about a guy that wore ass out pants, changes his name, writes songs about incest, an icon not to be an icon

What the fuck does "not be Prince" and why would you think I would ever complain about such a thing? Just so we're clear, I'm a Prince fan but I'm not a stan like many others here.... Not even close to it.

I don't know how you think wearing assless pants, writing songs about incest and changing one's name can in any way be viewed as the logical ancillaries to a tastelessly gaudy and cliched rock guitar performance either.

Not true. Not even close.

>Not true. Not even close.

It is close, Prince has done plenty of corny things and has created a fan base off of some pretty tasteless songs, corny ideas, and corny performances.

Writing slave on your face is pretty tasteless
Wearing a suit that is two toned in colors is bama corny
Pretending to give head while someone is playing a guitar solo = corny, cliche and tasteless

Prince is corny. His jokes are corny, and he has 100's of great tasteless songs.

Not sure, why one would be surprised when he shows up to perform and he does basically what he has always done - be obnoxious. make it about him, entertain, do something corny, do something tasteless

Yet, the same people will go to his concert and complain that he didn't make it about him, and shared to much with his band etc

What do you want? Him to sit there and be Norah Jones on guitar.

and the song was one of his deeper cuts, like little wing, lets say, i wonder if people would still be defending a solo (though more than the solo, its the performance that came with it) like the one prince turned in.

and I like how they put Prince's career in context... how far apart from others he stood, and how he basically inspired other artists to do what he was doing.

lots of good commentary in there. I subscribed, just because Jehan's that dude

Stevie being BLIND (hate to say it) and mastering/personifying the instruments he DOES play? SHEEEEEEEEIT.

and that's before you get to songwriting.

I'm probably one of the few that goes there but Stevie was from the era of "no biting other people's synth patches" and he is one of the few that managed to make his shit sound like "Stevie" (I'm thinking synth bass mostly).

esp. in 79-80 when he started using new equipment...

I agree with the people talking about the 1999 album because I was 3 yrs old when my dad blasted the cassette in the car and hearing lady cab driver and the sound of a woman having a full fledge orgasm over the speakers and the entire "this is for the...."skit blew my mind and made me a diehard Prince fan for life...

I had no idea he was that old. It seems like he's been around forever, I just never thought that dude was almost 50!

But that was quite an enjoyable podcast. They did a good job of trying to give an overview of his career and everyone made some very salient points.
