"So are there any more holy grail samples left to find?"

People found Ice Cream and Shook Ones and all of that... but are there any others that people still have yet to unearth? I feel like in the internet age secrets aren't kept very well any more, so if someone knows a source, the rest of the world finds out soon enough.

The only one that comes to mind at the moment is Nothing Like This, which I remember a story about how Just Blaze gave up looking for it. Any others?

I have no idea where Crooklyn came from

but...

I think Queen Latifah's "Just Another Day" provides a clue. S.I.D. (who I think was an in-house producer for the Flava Unit) masterfully sampled Herb Alpert feat Janet Jackson "Making Love in the Rain" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3ORbMKsDVw). The filtered bass line on Just Another Day and Crooklyn are very similar in the sense that the notes are long, sustained, and smoothed out. Notes you would hear on very slow songs. I really think Tip sampled some sort of R&B ballad to get that sound. The bass is so pronounced in Crooklyn that I doubt its a classic soul or jazz which would have more movement. He could have pitched it down or time stretched it (rare for 1993, but possible if you had an s950), but I doubt it.

My money goes to it probably being some type of R&B ballad between 82 and 92. I'm probably wrong, but every time I hear Just Another Day, I think about Crooklyn

I can understand why some samples are hard to find given what the producer might have done to it chop/filter wise, but that sample sounds pretty untouched...

To this day no one knows what that sample is.

Newer one for me is Drake's 'Lord Knows'. It was replayed, but Just says the sample couldn't be cleared.

This is what I've been hearing from people for a couple years. Could be a joke, could be the truth.

Then again, I was convinced that Dilla spun a Boston record backwards until I found out about the real sample last month.

Maybe the two notes that come in right after the drum/bass intro? I've never tried it myself. Maybe someone with some nice pitch-shifting software can prove me right or wrong.

How can you even know where to begin when "searching" for a sample?

you can sort of guess the general timeframe when something was recorded
if you're familiar with production styles, that's another way

it's still a crapshoot though

Not sure it's a holy grail joint but I think this one is still unknown. I actually tried to find it on "Whosampled" and there is a hilarious conversation between two guys about it.

Peace,

In response to Reply # 0

i've always felt like Electric Bazaar by Synthesizers Unlimited had to have played a role in the making of Electric Circus

particularly the track "Funky Dromedary"

That and The Love Machine album Electronic Music to Blow Your Mind By

Both albums just have so many sonic bits and pieces that remind me of Electric Circus

even down to the cover art
