I LOVE this guy.

I was surfing youtube....checking out some Toninho Horta....came across a performance from 2008 and got blown away. The engineering/mixing on this thing is effing incredible....I'd recommend following the youtube links and watching it all but here's where the drummer really did his thing:

I'm not really a drum solo fan....and the drumming is aces throughout....but if you wanna skip ahead the drum solo is at 6:30. The piano player is incredible too....real original and stylistic...a little Monk influence there.

So the drummer's name is Enzo Todesco and I geeked out on him for a few hours. I'm guessing the drum heads might be familiar with him....I wasn't but hey....this guy is unbelievable. Here's some links:

He's on Gino Vannelli's LIVE IN MONTREAL album from '91, and you know Gino only plays with the best (he's especially picky about drummers).

the older stuff he's done reminds me of Billy Cobham.

So neat and tidy though and with a latin twist. Every single song in that Horta performance I posted above has an interesting drum part. Dude is so intricate and expressive.

I can dig virtuoso playing and I can dig sampling....even when it's done 'outside a hip hop context'. You should get hip with modern art.
