good kid, m.a.a.d. city is just an incredible debut. the in-house (that tde team is something special) and guest producers all delivered, and kendrick held the album down lovely. the flows, the lyrics, the feel, the sequence...all of it was present and proper. i also like that the album retains cohesion through the shifting musical vibes (like someone said, it's got trappish stuff, jazzy, experimental, boombap...runs the gamut).
i still dig krit's first studio album, but i feel like it didn't hit like it should. the first few joints and the last half of the album are fireness, but the middle, especially weighed with all the repetitive hooks, loses me a little. i still like the songs, and the album is short enough to play through completely, but i'm not attached to as many songs on LTU as i was on every other krit release, even the ones before "k.r.i.t. wuz here".
having to use live instrumentation over samples may have thrown a curve in k.r.i.t.'s production prowess, too. j. cole seemed to navigate that issue with much more ease. i'm sure krit'll have settled shortcomings from LTU on his next joint. that said, dude is still one of my favorite rappers, ever.
