re-listening to Who Got The Gravy? the other day (that shit was very unfairly slept on).
Got me thinking it might be time to revisit their back catalog a bit, I loved them when they came out as a kid but they got sorta pigeonholed in the rap game.
Also, I had no idea how nice Shock G is on the keys, I mean I guess I sorta knew since he was probably 'Piano Man' like he was Humpty-Hump but it was cool to see him working it out with a live band.

I think to some degree I think people were getting sick of the whole Humpty Hump concept, which, by Shock G's account, Tommy Boy was constantly trying to wedge into all their tracks. But Shock G's production on the album was really ill: really dense and funky. I also rethink Saafir murdered all the tracks that he appeared on. The slight detour was the extended "Jerkit Circus" portion of the album, which might have been funnier if I was still in high school at the time.
my personal favorite DU album. i also think it's very underrated. doo woo you is my fave from this one. it's definitely a layered album like somebody else said earlier, with the pfunk samples and shock's original production.

Always dug it. Not as cohesive as Sons Of The P, but had some heat on it for sure.
And big shoutout to Future Rythm too. Eric Sermon knows what's up for jacking that interlude on Muddy Waters...
<-- Dave Thomas knows what's up... __________________________

one of my favorite Shock-G verses after the Sex Packets album. This album (hell all their albums, except MAYBE Sex Packets) are crazy under-rated and slept on.
DU as a group, always comes with vivid creativity and imagination both lyrically and musically. Their vision is on the same level as early Tribe, DeLa, early Wu, and Hiero. They cover serious topics in a fun way and the usual topics differently. Shock-G is a genius. And has a group of guys that back him fully.
It trips me out how I can play DU in the ride with somebody and their surprised it's DU. Like if you like it now, your mind would have been blown if you heard this when it came out. I am glad to hear they are still performing. Thought they stopped due to Shock's health. Good shit

not quite sure how they 'fell off'.
their debut album was a hit. the follow up 'sons of the p' was seen as an even stronger effort.
somehow this album fell between the cracks a bit, despite a strong first single in 'the return of the crazy one' and rising star tupac being featured on the second single, 'doo woo you'.
'future rhythm' was seen as something of a comeback, but i think 'the body hat syndrome' has it beat. the production is a lot tougher and shock rhymes a lot more on 'body hat'.
digital underground were the shit. shock's so talented. damn shame they never reached the fame they deserved.
the intermission track (a minute long cut up medley of DU hits) and also the sarcastic humpty hump awards do suggest that shock was perhaps aware of their star fading.
