I've been looking for similar music to his for a few years and I've come to the realization he's basically in his own genre. I think that speaks volumes about an artist when you create something that's not easily duplicated. I've heard musicians who sound like Premier, Pete Rock, Dilla, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Gamble and Huff, Rick Rubin, etc... But I've never heard one artist who has that sound that Flylo has. Not Dabrye, Burial, Nosaj Thing, Samiyam, Kona Triangle, etc..
Am I saying that Flying Lotus is the greatest producer/musician? No, not at all. But I am impressed that he's been able to develop a style that so unique that it's very difficult to imitate and still has appeal.
If i remember correctly JJ was actually the dude to put FlyLo on by letting him open for his shows and such. What sets them apart for me is that JJ is more talented as a musician and has more versatility to his sound. Both great artist though.

What about Shafiq Husayn? Or Georgia Anne Muldrow's recent stuff? i think they got some similarities...
Btw what i hear so far of this album is dope. Always been a fan and one of my favorite producers, even if his style changed here and there. He's also been putting in work as a video director which i gotta give him props for. (Tho some of his videos kinna fuck w/ my head a lil.) THAT i feel he definitely is in his own lane, tho Nabil Elderkin is similar too.

also that 'fly russia' comp from a couple years back
which is to say, people are trying for lohan's old lane, which was the less original one in the first place... you are right that no one sounds like him now
