"i accidentally listened to "don't drive drunk" just now. "
for many years, whenever i listen side 2 of the "woman in red soundtrack," i always make it a point to get to the turntable and in time to avoid hearing this track.
but i was lying down and i didn't feel like getting up. so i let it ride.
10 seconds in, i regretted not getting off the couch to change the record. as i sat there, in regret, i thought to myself..."maybe it's cool in a new wave/ trying to be pop sorta way?"
but no. this song is annoying. it's grating. the track sounds like an obnoxious bonus level in a video game. the lyrics are a trite heavy-handed morality tale.
and the car crash at the end sums up my feelings about this record.
god, how i wish I'd just gotten up and put on "characters." my greatest regret is listening to this song all the way through. again.

Even Stevie couldn't resist the lure of 1980s "paranoia pop", and this one fits the bill. the suspenseful synth lines building to a car crash crescendo. I'll admit it's not his best song in the world (especially since it's a PSA tucked into a soundtrack album) but it's more or less a product of the times, so I overlook it.
"Upset Stomach" from The Last Dragon is a song from that period I skip over a lot; it just sounds so flat in that '80s way to my ears.
Woman In Red is otherwise a pretty banging album, perfect set up for In Square Circle, IMO.

I've avoided this album for years, and earlier today saw it in iTunes and decided that I'd finally give it an uninterrupted spin from start to finish for the first time ever...
I had no idea the album version of "I Just Called..." found an even more effective way to annoy the hell out of me.
