"Artists with a 3 LP run of GETTING BETTER"

Grizzly Bear's recent album made me think of this

What artist for you have a 3 album run and each new lp has been better than the last

for now I'm only gonna say grizzly bear(yellow house-shields) but I'll come back and add my other ones later

I'd just say he rapped best on Safe and Sound, while the production and overall songs may have been better on Rhythmalism.

like, at all. Keep in mind I'm a west coast rap fan (big time) but don't actually LIVE on the west coast (and never have) so, that may play a part in why I don't totally "understand" that album, but...yea, Way 2 Fonky, to me, was a major step back for Quik from Quik is the Name, which he quickly corrected with, IMO, his best and most consistent album in Safe & Sound.

Two years ago, I would've disagreed with ISWYD being better than FanDam, but now, after spending a couple of months with C4C, I think he's improved every LP...remarkable considering the gap between releases and he's getting better where, most rappers his age, are losing steam.

Firing Squad / First Family 4 Life / Warriorz (their apex)

they waited too long/got held up too long to put out a proper follow-up, and I for one was geeked to hear what the '01-03 Roc-A-Fella bunch was going to do with 'em.

but those three in a row? that's some real building. Throw in their debut, and they go from sounding low budget but hungry to professional.

Isn't it the natural progression to get better over time and experience?

It's just strange to me that the industry has become you start off hot and decline, instead of the other way around. That's the definition of building careers that don't last.

Tribe, Kast, Roots, Prince quickly come to mind for my list.

it's not uncommon. I feel like WAY more often than not (at the very least, in hiphop), an artist's first album is their best and groundbreaking, and many of these artists struggle the rest of their career to regain that quality. Nas and Snoop come to mind immediately. That's why "sophomore slump" is such a popular phrase in music.

In response to Reply # 13

It's nearly impossible to "improve" when you have to change your sound for almost every album, and can't just let in naturally evolve because it has to fit into certain criteria and guidelines of "what's hot."

It's not like Basketball, where improvement is universal. In Rap...things change TOO MUCH. What was dope in 1990 was already outdated by 92. 92 shit barely made it to late 93. 93 didn't make it to 96. 96 and 98 sound WAY diff.

So because of that...you HAVE TO keep up, otherwise the fans and critics aren't gonna enjoy your product. As much as we talk about flops, we see them happen for different reasons. In some cases, the sound is just identical to the previous product, and although it's just as good, it's like "we've already heard that..." so it doesn't move you. In other cases, they try to evolve and keep up, but it's like "the folks you're imitating now do it better than you...and this feels forced."

And yea, we can say "just make good music, stop following trends" and all that...but we know it's never gonna be like that, especially for commercially appealing artists.

When The Smoke Clears, Da Unbreakables and then Most Known Unknown. Because the one album released after When The Smoke Clears and Da Unbreakables were just soundtracks.
