I admit that the previous version, with its guests, was a great display of him sort of trolling the industry while still making incredible music. But this new version is, IMO, better crafted production-wise and further shows Danny's ability to hold up a project on his own. I'm excited to cop it.

I'm at Get Up, production is more cohesive. The album isn't a star studded afair but in a way, I think its better that way. Danny! always talks about his dismay of the cosignness of Hip Hop, this album's tracklist seems more "wholesome"

But this album is immediately a Top 5 album for me in 2012. I was in kind of a shit mood when I woke up, and one play through PayBack and I'm mad optimistic.

PayBack is such a Lesson album, got something in it for everyone. This year has been overloaded with hyped up releases, and for me personally, classics. Probably my favorite year in music in my young life, and the most I've been glued in trying to catch it all. I'm not even a Danny! stan, I started listening to his back catalog like only the end of last year. But I've been pining for this release since I first heard the original, and fam, I'm completely satisfied. Despite the stripped down, changed up guest list this is actually a BETTER album.

He runs circles around most of these other producers out there, given that the beats on the original were so great already, and he was just like "fuck it Imma make an even BETTER beat for v2". And as a rapper is great too, witty, funny, technically sound, original everything you look for. I read once on here that Oddisee is the best producer rapper doing it right now, and I call bullshit. Payback seals that one up easily.

Good fucking job, now I just need it on Wax. Danny! what's good with it?

P.S - And I thought I was going crazy for a minute hearing Timbaland's Are You That Somebody interpolated like 15 times on this album, and then he threw on him speaking for a second to Ice it. All Smiles!

After listening to it all day, here are some thoughts:

I love the Timbo nods, but dude definitely overdid it. I think this album does not really showcase his production skills as much as previous albums.

I'm disappointed "Silly Me" was totally scrapped, but at least he released it and it's available. The new myintrotoletyouknow is very dope though.

"Get Up" was my fav song on the original, I'm disappointed slightly by the new version.

"Speed" is just as good as the brilliant original version, and is one of my fav songs on the album.

"Keep Your Head to the Sky" got me through a lot of hard times these past few months, and I'm ecstatic that he didn't change anything about it. One of my fav Danny songs.


I think if I never heard the original version of the album, I would like this version more. I do think the OG version is better, but I'm happy it got released. I will say that I don't really miss any of the guests that were taken off the album other than John Legend and Talib Kweli. I just really hope Danny! gets more shine from this album. Dude definitely deserves it, and this album will definitely be somewhere in my top 10 in an incredibly strong 2012.

dope album, copped it at like 12 midnight on monday. i was feenin' like k-ci and jojo.

first thought was man i wish danny! rapped over the "overture" beat. that shit is so lush, that's classic danny! production right there.

"even louder" is my fucking shit. i can't stop playing it. there's no way the original version could be iller.

i am though kinda disappointed by the lp version of "shit starters", especially after hearing the snippet of the o.g. version on the best of danny mixtape. i always liked the that big sean diss line and i haven't been able to listen to agallah in a long ass time so him replacing anyone is an L imo.

i was hoping that "goodbye love" would be an iTunes bonus cut but it's aight, i copped it off the evil single and added it to my version as a bonus cut along with "been away too long".

i'll be back with more in-depth thoughts later on.

Yeah I was pretty bummed he changed his verse on shit starters too. "Even Louder" is really dope too. And "Misunderstood's" beat is crazy and kids subtle, I missed a few things the first few times I played it.

I'm finding myself enjoying the beats more than I did initially. I still think he used those drums a bit much. But it's still very dope.

I thought you guys were probably over-rating this thing because he posts here...which often happens in okayplayerland.

This sh!t is phenomenal.

I had checked out some of his older stuff before and wasn't ever super impressed...

But this??

I can't beleive how dope this is. I love dude's production on this, the song writing, how the album flows- everything.

Definitely a top 5 contender this year.

Good for him man, this really is THAT good.

I know Jigga is a fan of his raps....he should get some BEATS from Danny.

Not once did I say your numerous name drops of Jigga a) make me dislike the album or b) makes me not want to check for you.

I actually dig the album. This is the first time hearing any of your stuff with the exception of hearing "I Don't Wanna Hear That Shit" earlier this year, which I admittedly like better than the remix (likely due to me being so used to hearing the song that way).

Don't get so sensitive over a remark like that, or any criticism for that matter. If the Jay cosign helps you out as much as Talib hoped it would him, then you are going to be reaching a much bigger audience in the future and, as a result, more criticism or nitpicking.

It took one of the first negative remarks of your album for you to reply in a thread where numerous people are giving your props. Don't focus so much on the haters (which I am not, as I clarified in the beginning of this reply), and enjoy the compliments you are getting.

But for the most part, if Danny takes a shot at a rapper, it's almost always for Lolz, and a few times he'll dis a rapper then end up working with him (ie: asher roth and blu)

Yeah, i figure that he usually is just messing with cats. i think that childish gambino beef stems from when he was trolling duke and recorded a prank call so to speak and gambino caught feelings. but on the real, i like a few joints by mr. glover but overall duke really ain't a dope rapper.

from what i heard the kidz in the hall drama is real though, since naledge and him used to rock on each other's tracks and whatnot on some for the love type ish but then all of a sudden naledge started acting brand new and wanted money to do a guest spot after danny! laced him free of charge for years. sounds legit especially since kidz done changed up their steez already to dub step and whatnot for some fame and money.
