My ADD has been cured
Due to the combined effect of exhaustion from day 1 and it being a Sunday, I didn't wander around as much, and I sat through the entirety of most sets
also, I got the impression from the limited wandering around that I did do, Day 2 trends toward the Rock n' Roll side of the festival
No Lowlights on Day 2, honestly, so I'll just go in chronological order since I'd purchase something from any of these acts if I don't already own their music
Aesop Rock - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch2Xvp1YPyU
Rocked It
w/Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz, might as well have been Hail Mary Mallon
Really good show for a hip-hop act
The back and forth was on point, they had a great stage presence, the crowd was hype, and they gave a kid from the audience a haircut on stage
bonus points to the DJ for doing his scratches live (yes I can tell the difference)
and the stage was next to the metro line so every 10 minutes a train would whip past, just adds something to a hip-hop set
Rob Sonic popped up out of his MC stance, wide eyed, like WTF was that, oh a train, cool...back to MC mode
Now all I want to do is eat and smoke, so I set up shop for the next couple of acts in the Tent
I dig electronic music and they have a DJ during set breaks so I don't have to venture out for more music in between acts
why even name a tent stage at a music festival, just call it the Rave tent and be done with it
The Field - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQxEVhyvA0I
electronic disco boogie
Glass Candy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-g4QxTndRk&feature=related
electronic disco boogie w/female lead singer (I acknowledge my weakness for bands w/female lead)
her prancing and shouts were like a little extra addition to the previous band's effort
Nicolas Jaar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GX_4PgUhYo
instrumentalists with elements of jazz, in St. Germain's lane
the live set had a guitar player and sax man
I dug the concept and out of these 3 groups they win the contest for my purchasing power
I'm not a big Rock n' Roll fan
Something about the angry young white male rocker seems out of place and forced today
but that didn't stop me from pausing for a few when I heard
Desaparecidos - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC2m2IzHPVU&feature=relmfu
there's a social commentary element in their content, not quite Rage Against the Machine, but this song should be the RNC's theme song
the songs were very well structured and written
the message was easy to uncover and identify with
and by the end of a few, I was singing along
Yeasayer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvUaK_MWkDg
they gave M83 a run for their money for best set at the festival
I feel like Yeasayer and M83 ended up being what people expected MGMT to be
Yeasayer's experimentation with different sounds and genre's in their recordings can come off as forced sometimes
but that is absent live, it's just a really really good time
bonus point, they had a lighting rig on stage that was kind of trippy, but the house lights were on the crowd not the band so you couldn't see the band, it just looked like shadows flailing and jamming in front of a laser beam emitting scaffold and it was actually pretty cool
Twin Shadow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zwZDvj565g
a danceable version of the National (faster tempo with the same instrospective relationship content)
dude is a rock star, he reminded me of the lead singer from Thin Lizzy
like, what is he? nobody born in america could look so comfortable in a long sleeve mesh shirt
they get the BUY THIS SHIT NOW stamp of approval
Beirut - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWSz_PAfgNc
Irish sing a longs, polka/waltz swing, with a mariachi flare
There is a pub somewhere in this world playing one of their songs right now
Perfect way to end the night and the festival
bonus points, the lead singer plays the trumpet and a ukulele
somehow the thought popped into my head that a band with a midget playing a ukulele would be huge (or at least I would pay money to see it)
My only critique for the event is no Reggae, and trust there was enough ganja being blown
LA's food truck culture made it easy to get food and offered a variety of choices
There was free water if you brought an empty bottle
If you didn't bring a bag in, you didn't even get searched
for around $90 I saw a handful of headliners and got turned onto to some new music
GREAT EXPERIENCE
