I don't have ADD, but I do now

1 main stage, 2 side stages, and a tent

It's like surfing the internet for music in real life

The Highlights = incredible performance and if I haven't purchased yet I will be:

Chairlift - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98XRKr19jIE&feature=relmfu

complete with a flyover to start their performance (I think it was for the dodgers game)

ol girls' voice will haunt you

it's not fully being captured on their records, and they've cut out dude's vocals

it's all her live, and it should be

bonus points

last song of the set, "we're going to do a song for the first time, it's just been released as a video in Japan, so I want to do it in Japanese"

hahaha, I already sense trouble

not even 10 seconds into the song

"hold up, stop, if we're going to do this, it's gotta be done fucking right"

and proceeds to get into an argument with the bassplayer

does the song, and storms offstage, BRAVO

Purity Ring - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETbGpGJNVLM

it's like Nena's whisper singing over your favorite D-Boy beats

sounds like what Ye and Jay play in their Maybach coupes when they're stunting

BUY THIS NOW

Tycho - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mehLx_Fjv_c

instrumentalists

almost an exact replica of the album live

with the additions of visuals on a large projection screen (which are eerily similar to the scenes in which I play this album)

and the drummer has gone to a whole nother level with this playing

absolutely killed it, can't wait for their next album

Future Islands - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vI_kx4J8Vc

the frontman is Meatloaf meets Henry Rollins

backed by Depeche Mode or the Eurythmics

very dramatic performer and a great time was had by all

M83 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX3k_QDnzHE

electronic stadium rock, by now everybody's heard a song or 2 from them

great show, huge turnout, awesome light show

big budget

Indifferent = good performance, but I won't be buying

Warpaint - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EWiY9xXrug&feature=BFa&list=ALHTd1VmZQRNrRq4EH9Llau1g45b9vR7Ri

they took forever to setup

I'm saying, if you're whole band is onstage, can't you just do a soundcheck, instead of just standing there

They just came off a little to self absorbed

we get it, you're an all girl group

congrats

but I got tired of it after 10-15 minutes of melancholy

Simian Mobile Disco - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkQoCCsu_fA

it's like an updated Zelda soundtrack

probably what they're playing on the mars sojourner

really cool light show, and it had the feeling of a 2012 rave

Refused - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvmuX0cZEH0

not my thing, but great show

Lowlights = you suck at life

Sleigh Bells -

The King of Rock, but instead of RUN or DMC droppin rhymes it's your 12 year old sister, and for the chorus she will be screaming and squealing

they get a bonus point

I'm sayin, if you're just going to play breakbeats, why have a drummer.

Just cue up the beat machine and split the money 3 ways, right?

James Blake -

I almost fell asleep

Bon Iver with a drummer

by the time he played a song I recognized I was already bored

didn't know it was a band though

why does it take 3 dudes to do so little

Pains of Being Pure at Heart -

Nothing personal, just the frontman is a terrible singer live

probably sounded great in the studio

but it's closer to torture live

My ADD has been cured

Due to the combined effect of exhaustion from day 1 and it being a Sunday, I didn't wander around as much, and I sat through the entirety of most sets

also, I got the impression from the limited wandering around that I did do, Day 2 trends toward the Rock n' Roll side of the festival

No Lowlights on Day 2, honestly, so I'll just go in chronological order since I'd purchase something from any of these acts if I don't already own their music

Aesop Rock - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch2Xvp1YPyU

Rocked It

w/Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz, might as well have been Hail Mary Mallon

Really good show for a hip-hop act

The back and forth was on point, they had a great stage presence, the crowd was hype, and they gave a kid from the audience a haircut on stage

bonus points to the DJ for doing his scratches live (yes I can tell the difference)

and the stage was next to the metro line so every 10 minutes a train would whip past, just adds something to a hip-hop set

Rob Sonic popped up out of his MC stance, wide eyed, like WTF was that, oh a train, cool...back to MC mode

Now all I want to do is eat and smoke, so I set up shop for the next couple of acts in the Tent

I dig electronic music and they have a DJ during set breaks so I don't have to venture out for more music in between acts

why even name a tent stage at a music festival, just call it the Rave tent and be done with it

The Field - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQxEVhyvA0I

electronic disco boogie

Glass Candy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-g4QxTndRk&feature=related

electronic disco boogie w/female lead singer (I acknowledge my weakness for bands w/female lead)

her prancing and shouts were like a little extra addition to the previous band's effort

Nicolas Jaar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GX_4PgUhYo

instrumentalists with elements of jazz, in St. Germain's lane

the live set had a guitar player and sax man

I dug the concept and out of these 3 groups they win the contest for my purchasing power

I'm not a big Rock n' Roll fan

Something about the angry young white male rocker seems out of place and forced today

but that didn't stop me from pausing for a few when I heard

Desaparecidos - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC2m2IzHPVU&feature=relmfu

there's a social commentary element in their content, not quite Rage Against the Machine, but this song should be the RNC's theme song

the songs were very well structured and written

the message was easy to uncover and identify with

and by the end of a few, I was singing along

Yeasayer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvUaK_MWkDg

they gave M83 a run for their money for best set at the festival

I feel like Yeasayer and M83 ended up being what people expected MGMT to be

Yeasayer's experimentation with different sounds and genre's in their recordings can come off as forced sometimes

but that is absent live, it's just a really really good time

bonus point, they had a lighting rig on stage that was kind of trippy, but the house lights were on the crowd not the band so you couldn't see the band, it just looked like shadows flailing and jamming in front of a laser beam emitting scaffold and it was actually pretty cool

Twin Shadow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zwZDvj565g

a danceable version of the National (faster tempo with the same instrospective relationship content)

dude is a rock star, he reminded me of the lead singer from Thin Lizzy

like, what is he? nobody born in america could look so comfortable in a long sleeve mesh shirt

they get the BUY THIS SHIT NOW stamp of approval

Beirut - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWSz_PAfgNc

Irish sing a longs, polka/waltz swing, with a mariachi flare

There is a pub somewhere in this world playing one of their songs right now

Perfect way to end the night and the festival

bonus points, the lead singer plays the trumpet and a ukulele

somehow the thought popped into my head that a band with a midget playing a ukulele would be huge (or at least I would pay money to see it)

My only critique for the event is no Reggae, and trust there was enough ganja being blown

LA's food truck culture made it easy to get food and offered a variety of choices

There was free water if you brought an empty bottle

If you didn't bring a bag in, you didn't even get searched

for around $90 I saw a handful of headliners and got turned onto to some new music

GREAT EXPERIENCE

Exile takes the stage, mans the tables, but where's Blu

"Blu report to the stage, anybody seen Blu, he's a tall light skinned giraffe looking dude, you can't miss him"

he slinks onto stage mans the mic and stand for the first 15-20 minutes

not really doing anything, just shouting out Exile while he chops and splices tunes together

I don't know why, but I thought Blu was shorter

Exile is a fool on the MPC

They eventually get into their set, which must have consisted of mostly songs from Flowers, which I admittedly haven't gotten to yet

I have Below The Heavens and Johnson & Johnson, but I think I stopped checking for his projects after that

He killed Common's One Day It All Make Sense beat that Exile managed to loop up, you know the one, "it's here, it's here, etc..."

Near the end of their set the "Dirty Science" crew rushes the stage

and Blu slinks back into the corner to bond with the mic stand

they kind of took over the show for the last 10-15 minutes

and the energy/stage presence was the exact opposite of Blu

Roc C

M.E.D.

even Egon was there

in between sets there is actually a sound check before Madlib comes out

I don't know why, it just amused me

the first time I've seen a DJ get a sound check

he gets right to it

he's got a couple of Mos Def tracks in his DJ set, are they working on an upcoming project?

the first one has an indian voice running through, and I thought it was new because Mos is on that Yasin, Yasin, Yasin, in the beginnig

anyway the track is fire

the in between time is filled with the usual suspects

you know he's spinning some Dilla

the 2nd Mos track had a more upbeat tempo, something like the Ecstatic

Freddie Gibbs comes out and immediately starts with "Fuck Da Police" as his crowd participation segment

I'm not the biggest fan, vaguely familiar with some of his work

but this kid is a problem, he's a rapper straight up

from "might rob me a nigga"

to "it don't have be the walk of shame baby...", for which he brought out BJ the Chicago Kid to sing the hook

I was perplexed as to why dude isn't BIGGER

anyway, dope showcase

I wouldn't put Blu on my list of things to do

but Exile, Madlib, and Freddie Gibbs are worth seeing live

Better than... wine and cheese at a museum

We remember the first time LACMA held a Through the Mic hip-hop concert. They did not know what to expect from this new audience they were bringing to the museum. Just as the show got underway all the liquor at the bar was gone while the wine stayed fully stocked. Several shows in now, they made sure there was plenty of vodka and whiskey to keep the hip-hop heads happy.

It may have been a night the DJs outshined the rappers. The crowd seemed most hyped when the series' co-curator and Los Angeles rap staple Murs stepped on stage wearing a Burbank Little League hoody and a kid's backpack to introduce Madlib for his DJ set.

We basically spent the entire time watching Madlib through the phones of fans in the front rows, as they recorded his whole set. That's probably the most annoying thing in today's concert scene. Put your phone down and watch the damn show. We never know what to expect from a Madlib set since the Beat Konducta's catalogue is so massive, especially when his set time is just 30 minutes. Classic hip-hop joints, obscure beats and foreign samples left some in the crowd confused, but most thrilled. It's great to see new generations of hip hop appreciate the artists and producers that have been holding it down for so long.

Freddie Gibbs came on to headline the night with Madlib as his DJ. Not sure where you rank Freddie Gibbs on the level of grimy rappers, but saying "Fuck the police" after every song in a museum in the Miracle Mile district made the rapper seem that much harder. Or how about asking, "Who's going home to get some pussy?" -- the question he asked before and after his song "Shame," which is about having a one-night stand -- catching some couples off-guard and causing guys to hesitate before looking their girl's way. The rapper originally from Gary, Indiana, and Madlib collaborated on a couple EPs released on Stonesthrow Records, with a full album anticipated later this year.

Earlier in the night Blu and DJ Exile hit the stage with several guest appearances including a collaboration with Fashwan and a freestyle with MED. Once again, the most impressive part of the set was when DJ Exile played beats on his MPC. Wearing his signature newsboy cap, he banged on his MPC with one hand, and held his cigarette in the other, taking puffs and making it look real easy.
Blu did cuts from his new album Give Me Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, and went all the way back to his 2007 debut release, Below the Heavens. His smooth flow and casual swagger on stage never gets old and the crowd rapped along.

Also performing was Nocando, the rapper representing the now popular Low End Theory held at The Airliner every Wednesday.

It's awesome that LACMA has taken a chance on programming not typically seen in a museum environment. After all, it is art. And that familiar skunk-smelling substance causing occasional smoke clouds to rise above the crowd throughout the show might make LACMA the coolest museum in town.

The Crowd: I know beanies and crew-neck sweaters are cool, but on a hot summer night in L.A., too many people had sweat dripping down their faces.
