Don't lock, we need an official album post. The lp is coming out in about a month and by the looks of it, everyone will be talking about it. You can hate all you want on his hair or his lack of Tribe love but no one is going to give you radio hits and lyricism simultaneously like Lupe.

He had a listening session last night, here are some excerpts from The Village Voice's write-up (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2012/08/lupe_fiasco_food_liquor_2.php?page=2)

Specifically for the Lesson:
"The album will be evenly split between songs based around concepts and songs that, as Lupe put it, are just straight up "rappity rap rap" songs. The latter includes "Form Follows Function," which he declared a "masterpiece" and features him rhyming over a groove that a little disconcertingly veers towards the smooth jazz side. The song also includes Lupe confessing how he's "been in a stew all day cooking food for thought"—a process that he flipped into "sushi for the soul." (We're not in Bronson territory here, chowhounds.)"

On any special guests:
"Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Part One will be a totally guest-free experience. But it's a situation that happened by circumstance, not design. As Lupe explained, there was simply no one else around in the studio while he was recording it: "Blu was asleep, Kendrick Lamar's in Asia."

On the overall concept:
Talking about the overriding concept behind Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Part One, Lupe called it his attempt to write a bunch of "songs about America songs about hip-hop." The recording process, he added, was part of his attempt to "figure out America."

ive had very little interest so far. all of the songs released have been decent, but he comes off very pretentious. and the production has been sort of bland. but soundtrakk (and the underrated 1500 or nothing) could make this worthwhile

Lupe mentions that Guy Sebastien and Pooh Bear are on the album. I assume the "no features" thing references people of interest.

He is entitled to feel anyway he wants and state this to the masses in whatever way he wants. However, I feel it's as completely irresponsible as Killer Mike's similar stance on voting.

People get up early as listen to these artists. It might be all they have to keep them going. They hang on every word that these artists provide in interviews. For someone to say I'm not voting because of these reasons and then end their statement with some variation of it's pointless and both parties are the same is reckless and irresponsible.
Lupe has history of providing a positive message but he's off base at times and cannot articulate message in a concise form. When he spoke to kids at the Chicago school made similarly reckless statements. Instead of telling kids to stay in school he went off on some other shit. He could've set someone back years with that reckless talk.

I got no beef with him as artist and he is entitled to his opinions. However, people listen to those opinions like they gospel and follow through on them. I just wish he'd think about the ramifications of his statements on young people's lives before he made them.

He spoke to students and (I'm paraphrasing) said you don't need school but real knowledge. That's a fucked up thing to say because all of those niggas need school. School represents an opportunity to gain knowledge and advance yourself. I get his point. However, what's wrong with telling kids to stay in school?

It's not perfect, it's definitely flawed. But it's good. Leagues better than Lasers.

The mixing on this album might be the highlight after my first listen. It's very... cushy. The beats feel like... sitting in an overstuffed recliner or... putting on that bubble goose down winter coat. That's not to say the beats are great, but they sound so... full.

There's several very good tracks on here, which was interesting, because most of the song intros had me cringing. Lupe's rapping. No one has ever doubted that Lu RAPS.

There is one, TERRIBLE song. Battle Scars. I couldn't make it through that one. The hook on Unforgivable Youth is also terrible, but when throughout the verses, the song is kinda dope. The Heart Donor hook is pretty weak too, as is Brave Heart. The rest of the song pretty much makes up for that in Brave Heart at least. Heart Donor is meh.

The beats are for the most part, very commercial. I would like something more... hip hoppy, but the beats aren't bad. Some of them are quite good even. There are way too many vocal effects throughout the album, too much adlibbing from Lupe, and he talks entirely too much. But that's all tolerable to me.

Form Follows Function, Cold War (despite the odd hook), Strange Fruition, and Hood Now are highlights, I would say.

After 1 listen, I give it a 3.75/5. Trimming the far a little -- Battle Scars, after a few more listens I'll be able to better pair it album down to the strongest 12-13 tracks.

Stronger recovery from the bullshit that Lasers was, even if it still does suffer from some weak hooks.

Just needs to work on his beat selection and focus on making a consistent msg. It's not surprising that he looks up to Nas a lot b/c they both have the same problem but both greatly talented. Both have managed to stay relevant despite what their worst critics say or have you think.

the album has grown on me. I still haven't had time to sit down and really listen, but I think I'll appreciate it more once I do.

When I first heard the album I thought it was okay, but now I'm like "this shit is actually pretty good."

I still can't get into Heart Donor, How Dare You, or Battle Scars. Everything else on it is cool, though.

Exactly. Makes the middle feel kind of out of place. Especially considering what he was saying about the album before it came out. Those tracks really felt like compromise. Especially with them all sitting together like that.
