I mostly learned so that I could write songs. Here's one of the few things I've recorded that is guitar-oriented. I was in a two-man group with a friend that was total mellow-out, New Age type music; this track is just me though (I played a keyboard wash first and then added a guitar lead to it) and was intended to be vaguely Mark Knopfler-esque, like the really soft stuff he did on the Princess Bride soundtrack.

...is not supposed to be there, and isn't there in the original track. I don't know what happened - something about making it into a video caused the audio to get a little messed up. The original sounds very clean.

If any of u feLLas want to / can post up a few different soLo riffs / meLodies... there's a few heads in here who might be abLe to chop some shit up &throw something down.. then, maybe... u might have a LittLe coLLaborative piece -- or, u might be abLe to go back on top of that beat & pLay on top of pieces of that new track with some other guitar parts.

If u want, post up a few mp3's... couLd be just a smooth 8 bar or 16 bar riff... doesn't have to be too eLaborate

Far from a virtuoso, but I know what I'm doing. Almost exclusively acoustic. A used Martin guitar I bought off craigslist a few years back is probably my favorite thing that I own. I also strum a mandolin from time to time and sloppily bang chords on a piano.

Never really had a desire to play lead. Which is weird for a guitar guy, but I just like backing myself up in songs and dicking around with different chord voicings and arrangements.

For about 18 years now and it's just so damn fun...

Here's something that I recorded. It's got three guitar parts on it, plus a bass guitar part, and digital drums which in hindsight are recorded very thinly.

Anyhow, the solo begins at 2:30 or so. The song has lyrics and a melody but I'm not much of a singer so I've taken them out for the sake of your ears

I've played for ten years, but have been lazy about practicing, so my playing is nothing to write home about at all. I have a lot more practicing to do. I've been getting back into playing; a lot of my music as of late have been electronic (digital).

I play acoustic and electric.

because I was told in a guitar lesson once that I have a natural rhythm and I was grateful to hear that.

In response to Reply # 39

That idea always seemed counter-intuitive to me in terms of
cultivating an extensively intimate knowledge of guitar technique.

"Rhythm" and "soloing" aren't polarized entities that stand in
contention of one another, ya dig.

Lemme put this in visual terms:

If guitar technique is a veritable *tree then the dynamic inter-related concepts of rhythm and chordal/single-line soloing would merely be 2 *leafs out of a plethora of many other *leafs that comprise the tree of guitar technique, nahmean.

When a guitarist understands this maxim, the notion of rhythm versus lead/solo as dynamic opposites seems simultaneously dwarfed and redundant.

I hope this answers your question.

Peace...

no, I dont know what you mean....lol...so what i get out of this is that you are saying that rhythm guitar versus a person that can solo are two different things like apples and oranges.

He's saying that the technical and feel skills necessary for good rhythm guitar aren't really different than those necessary for good solo guitar.

I'd suggest, however, that more than technique, what good solo guitar really requires is melodic and improvisational creativity. Plenty of guys have lovely feel and nimble fingers, but just don't have much to say.

Don't expect to improve drastically in a matter of hours, days or even weeks.

Practice practice practice.

Practice the most frustrating things. When your hands hurt, stop for ninety seconds and begin again. For me, this is bar chords. I fucking hate everything about bar chords. But I know how to play them now (sort of).

Try to play without a metronome or any sort of rhythm assistance. You need to know how to stay on tempo.

Ignore instructional videos or how to guides. They were made by people that are better than you will probably ever be and are only a recipe for frustration.

Learn the major chords. A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Then learn to play them in ascending and descending order. This will help you with two big things: 1) Knowing the chords and 2) Learning how to move fingerings quickly.

The most useful piece of advice I can give (because it's worked for me) is to try and play through your mistakes when practicing. If you stop and correct yourself every time you make a mistake, you're training your brain to react that way. If you just try to play through the mistake, pretty soon you'll find that you can play the part without a mistake.

Something that helped me a lot was learning a really easy song, then trying to play it in time signature other than 4/4.

Keep strumming. You'll get it.

. . .at incorporating some finger picking. Still pretty simple, in the bigger picture.

Got one I'm cooking up right now. It's a cover tune, but I'm trying to go in another direction with it.

It's slow going. You know.

In response to Reply # 53

I'm assuming you mean the intro - I wasn't sure if that was fingerpicked or flatpicked originally, esp. since you go into strum mode later on.

I still say you need to just practice a bit in open D tuning, just to get that rolling thumb patter down and get used to the picking pattern with the index and middle fingers without having to worry as much about wrong notes (or barre chords). I could basically just do Travis picking when I started messing around with open D (and DADGAD and open G) and it really opened up a lot more of the fretboard for me rather quickly.

So I started tuning up to D.

You're right about DADGAD. Whenever I go there, stuff just opens up and I get a lot more ideas and things just seem to flow better.

Thaylobleu- all of us were primarily out there as MCs/DJs, all of us have 'pre-hip hop' ears, aka we came up listening to everything and anything.

me and the bass player pretty much learned how to play during breaks at the studio, waiting for data to transfer, etc.

this has been as fun as any other time in music for me, once i got over the 'great guitar players are everywhere judging me' syndrome... cats are basically winging it, good times maaaaaan.
