"Sly Stone >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bob Dylan"

I like some of Bob's stuff and I know Sly admired a lot of his work but he's overrated and Sly is much more deserving of the hype, applause, love and respect that Bob gets. Sly was a much better poet than Bob. I know most would say "but Bob put out more music than Sly". While that's true, Sly still put out his fair share of classic and influential albums so it's not like it's ridiculous to say this and quantity isn't always a great thing if there's a lot of filler or mediocre stuff. Sly is one of the best artist (from writing to producing) to ever embrace music. Bob had a good knack for song writing but overall he was rather bland.

if Sly Stone was White he would have a Head bust on the Nation's capitol. as important and influential as he is its truly sad.

One of the Greatest Creative musical Genius we have ever had.

Dylan couldn't hold SLy's "Sly Belt" let alone match that Man's talent and depth IMO

DYlan had a few things I liked, however Sly Stone has a Body of work which I love, no contest.

Sly turned Woodstock out and had Jazz cats getting in on his bag of Grooves.

any turkey can dress like a Hippie and pull a Dylan, however how many cats can write and create the kind of songs that touches people of all social backgrounds, races, places and whatnot as Sly Stone did and still it is felt to this day?

Sly is one of the most underrated legends there is. In fact, he might be thee most underrated legend. The way that he changed music is mind boggling. It's almost like you can't even categorize his music because he blended genres and made them into his own so well. As far as I'm concerned, he broke the rules to music and then rewrote them.

our Black Artists never get enough and you gotta hear about this act or that act.

white folks talk about the Beatles,Elvis, Dylan and Marlyn Monroe as if its the the late 50's early 60;'s daily, so what if a Brother wants to speak on something that never gets talked about near enough?

i support the post on Sly Stone big time.

he accomplished far more than Dylan as a Songwriter, artist and Influence period. covered all basis as well. whatever will be will be.

or Say what you love about Sly.

Sly and Bob dylan have nothing to with each other really...

this just a folk to get folks attention that has been done to death before just switch the names like Sowhat did before.

ain't nobody going to learn nothing new or have some intersting insight.

and around here Black aritst like Sly get wayyyy more love than a white artist like Bob dylan so don't act like its some lack of love for Sly.

Even in the white rock media he gets more love than just about any other black artist from that era save Stevie.

Like music is always personal opinion and taste but Sly Stone and Bob Dylan come on now you really just coming down to your taste.

Honestly, I thought that this would make for a great discussion because there are similarities between Sly and Bob. Again, it's not like my claim is ridiculous or anything.

i just chimed in with my dime.

Sly Stone was a unsung act on tv one a month ago and thats a crying shame IMO however not enough people know about Sly Stone and other Great Black artists period.

that's a fact alot of heads ain't ever heard of Sly Stone's music, however the media here has Bob Dylan ads in Victoria Secrets commericals and he is featured and talked about here and there.

Sly Stone is treated in alot of circles as dead or died with Hendrix and Joplin.

nothing wrong with defending SLy Stone and his impact period.

in America Black Artists aren't treated the same as White artists and that's a fact. Michael Jackson never got his due alive as he has in death and that is the truth

Sly might get his due around here but outside of here, Sly doesn't really get his due like a Bob or The Beatles. Hell, Sly doesn't even get the same do as Brian Wilson does. And I love Brian Wilson's work. Pet Sounds is a classic album and one of the best albums of all time.

Sly's situation is dicy because he was happening in the 60's and he was badd in the 70's however Marvin Gaye,Donny Hatahway, Barry White, Stevie Wonder, are seen as the dynamic duo

then on the soundtrack tip you had Isacc Hayes and Curtis Mayfield

then on the songwriter tip you had a Stone co hort Bobby Womack, along with Bill Withers and Al Green getting that shine.

on the Band tip Earth, Wind and Fire, Kool and the gang, Isley Brothers, then Bar Kays, Commodores, Cameo,Mandrill, brick

groups Jackson five, gladys knight and the pips, spinners, stylisitcs, o jays

gamble and huff

chic

then you had cats like RIck James, Ray Parker Jr later on Prince, Roger troutman Michael Jackson

,etc.. Competition was fierce and if you didn't hit no more you got kicked to the curb no matter who you were. thats what happen to Sly.

heck 28 years ago as badd as the Jackson 5 were they were doing vegas.

Yeah, he might get more recognition Isaac, Curtis or Donnie, Isley or Earth, Wind and Fire but I still think he doesn't get the proper recognition he deserves like The Beatles or Bob get.

them 2 is like the Lord and the holy ghost along with the Stones...if its any all time great list...them 3 are going to be in the top 10 either album/song or artist.

Even newer white rock fans are tired of seeing them 2 or 4 always up there as high as fuck and you got folks saying "what about our history THe clash and them was just as good and impromant to me"

then most folks ain't caring about Larry Graham too tough.

i mean Graham is One of the most important Musicians ever and he ain't talked about for various reasons because him personally rubs some folks the wrong way or they can't get with him musically for whatever reason.

heck i remember 20 years ago before Prince brought him into his camp Larry Graham was giging back up for the Eddie Murphy band.

while he kept work and sessions, it wasn't a long line of folks debating or seeking him out per se.

that's awful..cause he basically invented slap bass didn't he?

but maybe Eddie played a high ass price he was ballin back then.

but yea I was just sayin Sly has been discussed ad nausuem on here its seem and I don't see what new we could get from a vs post against Bob Dylan.

Like its so many bands it seems still get overlooked on here like the ones you mention above.

bottom line he was gigging in Eddie Murphy's band, that's like Eddie Van Halen gigging in Keanu Reeves band the name of the leader is big, however they ain't packing them in or selling records.

Eddie had his real success on the music front back in 85 and a little bit thereafter, point was Larry Graham was living in Hawaii and down for any gig he could get basically.

yeah its a reality call when Bass Guitar innovator is backing up Eddie Murphy on a music tour.

i like Eddie and He has a little talent musically, however that ain't even funny in the bigger picture.

like watching paint dry.

and Dylan never made more important music than Sly Stone

never reached as many people as sly stone did and never had the reach of influence as Sly Stone did period.

Sly flipped the game and was truly a game changer.

different strokes for different folks.

Highway 61 Revisited is one of my favorite albums by Bob but when you compare it to Fresh, it's pretty bland.

In response to Reply # 42

That Elvis Costello is more popular than Mobb Deep on the lesson is not something I've noticed and obviously (?) not really the case. Probably just someone who ranked Elvis very highly. However, the higher placings (like top 10 or so) dhould be fairly representative of the Lesson's general taste based on the amount of participants in the poll which is still a bit too low. I don't really know how many participants that needs to be involved for this to be statistically sound since it's hard to know how many people there are that frequent the lesson.

because, as you can see, participation was too low (to get those names on the final list), and we didn't have any moderators back in 2010 except the one who anchored prince, MJ, outkast, and stevie wonder artist of the month topics and then dipped back to twitter, so that didn't help getting the topic to stay up for people to see it. i agree the top 10 or so are probably indicative of the taste of the lesson, but the ordering overall is just off.

48. "Hip-Hop always comes up short in those types of lists..."
In response to Reply # 46

It's quite interesting that not a single act in the top 20 is Hip-Hop and yet, this is a Hip-Hop site to a large extent. However, I've noticed that even really big fans of Hip-Hop often have an issue with rating their favorite acts along the same lines as a Stevie or Beatles or Prince or whoever; there's a certain inferiority complex there which, while understandable (careers generally being short before fall-off etc.), is somewhat sad because if even the fans don't rate their heroes too highly, who else will?

Of course, if I made a list (which I never would), I would probably not list any Hip-Hop acts in the top spots either despite loving the genre when it sounds good to me so I'm part of the problem...

i also think there isn't a whole lot of agreement, especially now, about the best hip-hop artists. there is a lot of regionalism and style and era preferences, which i think are healthy and make the board more fun, but they cancel each other out in list making, whereas "everyone" can agree on the greatness of the classic (which here means '70s mostly) artists.
