The other day, I picked up a slightly scratched/worn copy of Sole's "Bottle of Humans" on vinyl locally out of the $1 bin. I remember first getting into Anticon back around 1999-2000 when the first sampler dropped. There was something that I was drawn to...either the production, the eccentric angle of the music, Slug on "Nothing But Sunshine." But here I am, over a decade later, rummaging through a $1 bin at a local record store finding a beaten copy of Sole and wondering what is their legacy, if any?

Did they blow it with the whole "Hip Hop Music for the Advanced Listener"/"Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop" shit?
Is their legacy some small camp of furry guys from Nova Scotia and Maine who made weird heavy poetry raps?
Is their legacy Sole getting his ass handed to him by El-P and Len, being made the laughing stock of the independent rap scene?
Is their legacy guys like Sage Francis, Buck 65?
Was "Bottle of Humans" ever respected? Deep Puddle Dynamics?
Is their legacy bizarre left field stuff from Restiform Bodies, Why?, Odd Nosdam, Dose One?
Is is the production of Jel, Sixtoo, Signify?
Misunderstood? Ahead of their time?
Do they even leave a legacy or is it just too early to tell?

What's the feeling on Anticon now that they're showing up in the $1 bin?

Granted, it's not an incredibly massive sample size to make definitive conclusions, however, when I would conversate with those folks, they basically didn't know much about rap music, past or present.

However, something about those artists, whether it was their subject matter, their image, whatever, was appealing to that crowd at that time. And I'd venture a guess most of those cats are now onto whatever pitchfork is pushing these days.

they put out some really good stuff.
buck 65 is a bona fide G. man overboard and vertex are still great.
i listen to clouddead still (not released on anticon, but still)
id like to hear my old hemispheres tape again and see what i think. havent listened to most of this stuff in years.
im sure id laugh at a couple them tracks.
some really good production too. particularly jel, controller 7, buck, sixtoo, odd nosdam...

sole has basically always sucked. wasnt really a huge fan of why ? outside of that first clouddead album. pedestrian sucked.

if nothing else, i do think they genuinely expanded the genre. for better or for worse. but at least they kinda made it okay to reference ginsberg in a rap song or some shit.

I still rock my Doseone and Themselves and all of his many side projects religiously. I'm JUST now getting a lot of what Dose is on. I've never been into Sole. I really liked Jel's beats and Buck 65 was a champ. I even dug Sixtoo.

I mean they really did some amazing music. It was so challenging at times to listen to them but I was always engaged.
