"Inspired by Andre on "Sixteen";...what are the worst solos in history?"
Mon Aug-06-12 03:33 PM by -DJ R-Tistic-

I remember Phonte posting up this funny ass piano solo on a James Brown song before too. I don't know why, but horrible solos on songs are great to me...I can listen to it hundreds of times and still be entertained.

What's some more that y'all can post?

it's not even that the solo is really bad on its own, but it becomes laughable for the way he threatens to blow our minds with his axe skills and then goes into that bullshit while shouting out some of the best guitarists as if he's matching or even paying tribute to them in any way.

(Let's not even get into how he compares Jerry Wonder's stiff-ass bass playing to Bootsy's)

The whole thing just makes me cringe

Yeah, that's fucking embarrassing. You can hear a dozen different dudes playing at a higher level than that in any random Guitar Center, any random day of the week. It's not bad, it's just very rudimentary.

Dre was already playing guitar on Idlewild and TLB according to the credits, surely he was just really drunk and/or high in the studio that day?

I'm usually a big fan of Tom Morello's solos, but this one sounds like the prolonged torture of a cat...

It starts at the 2min 30 mark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1mexmK6bDY

It's still a pretty good song though

No way a man with good hearing would let that ride on a proper release. You wanna throw that on a free mixtape, cool but Jimi himself couldn't sell me on that horrible solo. I would've been like "word, that's how you feel about me, Jimi?"

again. If you have to review this album or song, or even if you are just talking casually about the song, please make it a point to mention how awful this guitar solo is.

He obviously didn't have much technique but his note-choices were really nice even if he had a tendency to play some really off-notes at times which I suspect had more to do with lack of technique than bad intentions. He kills it on "Funky Drummer" for example; that's some cool solos there IMO. For some bad examples, I can't come up with any off the top of my head but the "Sho' is funky down here"-album (which was allegedly his attempt at psychedelic rock) has some very awkward stuff which is sort-of predictable I guess-he probably wanted to "wild out" in that context...

Do the little keyboard noodlings in the breaks even count as "solos"?

http://youtu.be/R8AOAap6_k4

Whatever... they're pretty uninspired.

Plus, I'll admit to just looking for an excuse to post this vid because I never fail to be amused by the over-enthusiasm of the bass player and the coked-up, mega-mulleted engineer.

Also: Linda is so fucking cool.

They still play it regularly on the radio. Anyway, that's the type of non-Prince/MJ "R&B" that crossed over here. I always liked the song BTW, great melody even if it is repetitious and I dig how the girl sings it

I'll Follow the Sun comes to mind.

His lead playing was so suspect that McCartney played the majority of the lead parts on Sgt. Pepper and even on George's own Taxman.

But he also had some really great ones later on (Something, for one) that more than make up for it.

Shit is almost always total off key nonsense. But I still bump some Slayer though.

On their own, they are tuneless wankery with no redeeming musical values but in the context of Slayer's often very tight and rigid songs, they give a sense of craziness and spontaniety to the proceedings. I also like the way he and Hanneman shifted the Judas Priest- alternating solos approach to the left while still retaining the dynamic. Basically, in JP, Glenn Tipton played the melodic, classical-inspired solos wheras KK Downing spazzed out with the whammy-bar and played more in a post-Hendrix (minus the blues) style. In Slayer, Hanneman pretty much played like Downing and King like a mongoloid but you still get the contrast.

I should also mention though that those tuneless solos became a cliche in more extreme thrash and early death metal as well so the concept has pretty much been played out for 20 years or so; it doesn't have much left to offer and most lead-guitarists in the at least more notable metal-bands seem to have abandoned it, at least as the dominate lead-style.

...Robin Thicke's last track on his most recent album Love After War, the track called "What Would I Be", he has a very short piano solo that i was unimpressed by. Of course i am not the best on the keys nor are some other artists i look up to (like Gil Scott-Heron), but still unimpressed. Probably because i was expecting some freal down home blues slash gospel jammin on the track. Still a nice song.
