"i wish currensy's "breakfast" was like 8 minutes long."

i don't know why they treated this song like a throwaway misc. 10's rap song and faded it out at under 3 minutes.
even the video for it looks like it was shot on a wednesday afternoon with a smartphone not unlike most rap videos of the past 3-5 years...
but 2 years later - it's easily the best song currensy has ever made.
they really should have put more stock in this one track and ran with it...
also, it's probably the only thing mos def has been involved with in like 10 years that i've repeatedly listened to.

dude doesn't really do long songs... some of my favorite curren$y tracks are those where he hops in for a lengthy verse and kills it (Example, Breakfast, Airborne Aquarium, etc.)

also, he doesn't usually adhere to "normal" structures.. one verse.. verse verse hook... verse hook verse alternate hook/outro..

dude's got his own brand... from what i read and hear, it doesn't work for everyone.. but those who get what he's about appreciate it.. i liked his music for a while before i realized just how much dude was ripping mics.. maybe it's the volume of material, but for some reason, listening to curren$y seems like an ongoing process.. you almost have to look at the whole body of work to get a real sense of the dude as an MC and artist.. each mixtape/album/EP offers a different aesthetic sonically and in C$'s flow.. it's crazy how he can stay in a lane that appeals to his fan base, yet still be pretty experimental in ways.. i wouldn't have thought it in '08, but after alllll of the project's he's done, he still keeps shit fresh..

but yea, the brevity on that track is part of what makes it so cool, imo.. it just seems like a little snap shot and executes its purpose really well.. not to compare the actual songs, but Happiness is a Warm Gun doesn't seem like a throwaway because it's short.. neither does Little Wing... sometimes the yearning for more is a GOOD thing as is (although Happiness is a Warm Gun feels like an epic length track)

I personally thought 'Scottie Pippens' for example with Spitta & Freddie Gibbs off the Covert Coup album he did with Alchemist was probably the second-best rap song of last year behind 'ADHD'.

"#JetsGo' off Weekend At Burnies set off that set lovely.

But there's no point in me listing songs because I'm not gonna share your taste, the stuff is all readily available at your fingertips and most of it for free.

The bottom line is he's put out like six albums, two or three EPs, a collabo album and his major-label debut since the last one you listened to so 'two years later, it's still his best song' sounds silly since you ain't even bothered to check to see if you like anything beyond it.

I feel dumber myself for actually taking thirty seconds to explain that to you.

and Breakfast is still, to me, the best shit he ever did. Many a day I've just left it on loop for an hour.

My top 5 would probably be:

Breakfast
Roasted
Pregnancy Test
Address
Elevator Music

And yes three are from Pilot Talk. That album is nearly perfect, I could easily replace the two older selections with Life Under the Scope or Prioritize or King Kong or Example.

or I should say OG version with the drums turned up and the Mos outro added. not his best song but in my top 10, has all of the elements of old Spitta that I like before he became obsessed with mafia don talk.

video game reference(xbox web browser/updated nba2 rosters)
movie reference(Daniel son, crane kick)
random sports reference(Yancey Thigpen won't catch me sleeping)
wordplay(offbrand mugfuckers/odd number, you are not even..on my level)

I think I might prefer the live instrumentation version but that might just be due to the mixing.
