"Right-leaning 'political' Hip-Hop"

inspired by this thread in p2p http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=6&topic_id=620330&mesg_id=620330&page=

Thinking about the topic of political Hip-Hop that is right leaning... are there many examples?
Obviously the broad majority of conscious/political Hip-Hop is leftist/against the current system, hence why it's getting made as a message. But there seem like some areas that Hip-Hop can be more conservative, such as on the topics of abortion and gun-control. Qwel, for example, has an anti-abortion/pro-life track '$19.99 A.D', but this could be put down to his religious leanings. Any thoughts/examples?

There were tons of anti-gay lyrics, especially in the late 80's. Not to mention the over the top materialism and gun worship that have always existed in hip hop.

There's a HUGE generation gap between young Cuban Americans
and their parents on Cuba/Castro

Sure, they still don't like Castro

But the gap is pretty big

most of it is right leaning, because most rappers are "rooted" in three things socially and "intellectually":
5% / NOI teachings
Christianity
and the dog eat dog mentality of Drug and Gang Banging life

even rappers who some champion to be progressive are still tied to the "woman are Queens of the earth, BUT stay yo ass at home and don't be a whore" logic.

to be honest, most rappers would be moderates or at the center of the right-left socio-political axis, but off the top there are very few real left leaning rappers:

Mos
Lupe
Dead Prez
Immortal technique
Kweli
Jasari X
Paris

and that's ok. i don't need rappers for political analysis. I got Vijay Prashad, Robin DG Kelley, Cedric Robinson, Mike Davis, etc for that

Most songs that actually talk about drug dealing, especially at the street level, are all about the protestant work ethic.

Hip Hop is pretty socially conservative, and sometimes economically conservative (in some respects mirroring the black community), but it's also not very Republican or Conservative with a capital C.

he stated political songs. which i read as songs about a specific issue, not an sentiment within an artist discog or personality.

when it comes to the Wu and their "we don't bust on sheets, Earth don't abort the seed, teach my kids how to read and cook while i fuck groupies" sentiment ain't really the point of this post

By the song title we are lured into thinking he's pro-democrat ("Bitch Im Bill Clinton"), but then half way through the verse we find out where his loyalties really lie:

Hasn't it been pretty well established that both 50 and LL are both politically conservative? I forget whether the evidence was party registration, voting record, political donations, interview quotes, or whatever... but yea.

Its a very 50 Cent thing to say

I always heard it as more of a personal thing — not really having to do with social or religious ideas.

Seemed to me he was just mad at his own irresponsibility and trying to come to terms with the fact that he was physically able to pro-create, but mentally unsure if he was mature to handle it.

Not a political song at all.

I can't not see an abortion regret song as being political, especially from the artist formerly known as Common Sense.

"we gotta start respectin' life more y'all"
and
"gotta recreate y'all"
are surely political statements? the 'we' and 'y'all' seem to pre-establish the rest of the song as something beyond the subjective experience

But if Tragedy can't get that pro-life label off of a throwaway line, Com should get it for dedicating an entire song to it.

In response to Reply # 0

is that considered right wing?

its diminished a LOT but... hiphop has never been exactly a ghey rights activist in the past

and most rappers dont pay taxes either if you count that as GOPish

Hip Hop never championed gay rights. Not even the supposedly liberal rappers of the day like A Tribe Called Quest or Melle Mell. Undercover fag, anyone?
