how about

"With the birds and the bees and all those groovy things
Like getting stomach aches when you gotta go to work
Or staring into space when you're feeling berserk"

"Some say that I'm eccentric cos I once had an orgy
And sometimes for breakfast I eat grits and porgies"

"I'm moving, yes I'm grooving cos my mouth is on the motor
Use the Coast in the morning to avoid the funky odor
Can't help being funky, I'm the funky Abstract brother
Funky in a sense, but I play the undercover
Once had a fetish, fetish for some booty
Now I'm getting funky in my rap and that's my duty"

yea, those kinda lyrics shit on Kanye's lyrics on "Get By (Remix)", "Drive Slow," "Crack Music," "Gone," "Gorgeous," "Can't Tell Me Nothing," etc.

You really don't need to go down that road because it won't go anywhere. They both have their moments where they ain't saying shit, and they both have a way of spitting some lines that come off endearing when they say it, but wouldn't work if it was another rapper.

For what it's worth, I like both of them a lot and don't give a shit how this poll turns out. I'm just saying.

I was just doing that because it's absurd to me for anyone to act like Q-Tip is obviously a way better lyricist than Kanye when a good portion of his writing is silly rappity rap A B C nursery rhymes. Kanye obviously has a large share of cringe-inducing lines as well

Im probably one of the biggest Tribe/Q-Tip fans ever, and while I hate Kanye lately, if there is one thing that dude is good at, it's clever lyrics with a fun twist.

Tip is good in the old school lyrical vain, but his stuff is not that clever consistently. Like Tip might have a couple clever verses on each track, but I always find myself smiling at Ye's wordplay and cadence.

One of my fave Tip verses:

I am recognizing that the voice inside my head/ is urging me to be myself/ and never follow someone else/ because opinions are like voices/ we all have a different kind/ so just clean out all of your ears/these are my views and you will find that..."

One of my fave Ye verses:
18 years, 18 years
She got one of your kids, got you for 18 years
I know somebody paying child support for one of his kids
His baby mamma's car and crib is bigger than his
You will see him on TV any given Sunday
Win the Super Bowl and drive off in a Hyundai
She was supposed to buy your shorty Ty-co with your money
She went to the doctor got lipo with your money
She walking around looking like Michael with your money
Should've got that insured, Geico for your money
If you ain't no punk, holla "We want prenup"
"We want prenup" Yeah
It's something that you need to have
Cause when she leave your ass she gonna leave with half
18 years, 18 years
And on the 18th birthday he found out it wasn't his?!

I shot the bebe gun.

Man, Q-tip was never lyrical to me, he is literal if anything. He can spit and has some great verses but the stuff Ye does with punchlines and metaphors when he gets it right kills Tip when he gets it right with his simpler rhymes. Tip is more of a poetic, get the message across, story telling cat, I honestly don't recall him ever spitting some super complex multisyllabic shit like Nas or Rae or somebody like that.

I think some of yall picking Tip on a bullshit "real hip hop" type of thing.

and we all know Ye's biggest fault is just the wack ass punchlines or the times his little speech impediment or whatever that shit is comes out.

but I guess the man who taught us industry rule #4080 would win on here

The fundamental problem with discussions like this is that there's no common understanding of what "lyrical" actually means. I've noticed that a lot people here use it to describe the use of technical devices such as metaphors, alitteration, complex rhymeschemes, etc.

On the other hand you can find definitons such as this in the dictionary:
lyr·i·cal (lr-kl)
adj.
a. Expressing deep personal emotion or observations, which seems to refer more to the quality of the content rather than the form.

I suppose this actually deserves a thread of its own.

In response to Reply # 0

It's a lot closer than people are making it out to be. I remember cats kinda going in on me because I said Dave (Trugoy) was better than Tip. Tip's voice made a lot of his shit sound fly. That's what really put him on the map. Kanye's ego makes it hard for the OKP contingent to give him his props. He's no slouch on the mic.

In response to Reply # 24

that was his best "lyrical" performance.

he was in a zone during that time...I think if it was a Q-tip solo (which it sorta was anyway) it would have been hailed a classic.

You take the non phife songs on there add some of the soundtrack songs and guest apperances he did during that period you'll have an amazing album.

but to act like he some lyrical monster is not really what he is..even Qeust said as much when Vivriant Thing came out.

I agree with all of this. Get Phife and Cons off the LP and add them
other soundtrack cuts then Tip got a solo classic under his belt.

I have no clue what's going on in this post. The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders are in the pantheon of rap music. The internet is rotting niggas brains or something.

for the most part. and that is 100% OK. qtip is stiLL a dope mc. but he never was coming that deep or that 'LyricaL'... even tho kanye has used about 20 different ghost writers-- you got to give 'ye his props here. he's went deeper with the wordpLay, concepts, and themes then Qtip or tribe ever did.

I Like the foLks who voted kanye in this one and went against the grain.

In response to Reply # 0

and let me start out that Q-Tip is my favorite hip hop artist ever, but he really isn't that lyrical like a Black Thought, Monch, Mos or even Ye.

If anything he was a swag rapper and afrocentrism was his swag. people dig his voice, flow, personality and overall vibe but not lyrics per se. His rhymes are intellectual and come from a unique perspective, he says things that you can say and puff up your chest without tough talk, he says things you wish you said to that girl you saw on the train yesterday.

In my opinion the fact that he ISN'T lyrical makes him a better artist than rappers who are. He says a lot of cool, slick shit and does so using regular language & technique that the average dude on the corner can grasp without feeling like he's listening to a fucking word puzzle. He doesn't use a lot of metaphors and double/triple entendres or other tricks & he doesn't need to.

Tip's style is understated and sublime, he's not a swag rapper that's pretty fucking insulting
swag rappers are the guys that try to be like him but have none of the earnestness or gravity he does, Kaney included

----But I think the metaphors and double/triple entendre are what separate the good lyricists from the great ones, and the quicker you are on your feet with this stuff, the greater you are. Maybe it's because I also have an appreciation for poetry, but these are the things that make me love Mos Def and Common circa Resurrection.

I shot the bebe gun.

Kanye needs the whole production, the lights and the bombast. maybe not old hungry Ye...and I REALLY like egotistic Kanye, but without the killer beat I think the attitude wouldn't rub me right.

And if I just wanted to listen to something in the background, I'd go for almost anything Q-Tip related before Kanye. It would just feel good to be in a room where Q-Tip was rapping; I'd be kind of bummed out if Kanye started rapping around me (I mean not really, but for the sake of argument).

really?

We won't even say that Q-Tip is better. That's not in question. It never should be, either.

We'll just say that Kanye is well aware of his limitations as a rapper. He compensates with amazing song crafting, and a great ear for guest rappers.
