It got stale while other forms of dance music rose to prominence and/or progressed and evolved with the times and/or the audience.

The most gifted practicioners of said style even moved on to bigger and better things (Little Louie Vega, Jellybean Benitez, India, etc.).

I hated a couple of these songs but they did get stuck in your head.

I don't know how I tried to do homework with that station on, this shit was way too umptempo/shrill/distracting for an undiagnosed ADD kid to concentrate thru.

Shit had me in a history exam with the chick from Exposé caterwauling 'Let Meeee, show you how I feeeeel' in my head.

I also find youtube 'this was real music' nostaligic comments to be increasingly hilarious depending on the artist/genre/era but it's great how much this mistily miserable top reply on the 'Show Me' link:

"I think today's top 40 is gay not this music. Freestyle was one of the best genre in the 80's and early 90's. There is no other genre that could compare to how freestyle was back in the days. Freestyle had one of the best sickest beats and it was about love and partying. It made more sense. Today's crap top 40 pop teens listen to today and that garbage hip hop or rap whatever you want to call it is COMPLETE GARBAGE that makes no sense. It sounds all the same.tonebeatz24 in reply to MANIACLATINHOODS 1 month ago 21"

manages to sum up how my 12-year-old ass felt about a lot of this freestyle (I don't even think I recognized what it was as a genre, it was just 'dance music') stuff back then.

Nowadays I can recognize the quality of some of the cuts (Lisa Lisa specifically is the 'artist' from this era I liked best then & now) but pretending this was some classic era of music is just fetishizing the time period.

A lot of this stuff was uptempo, percolatingly mindless pap then & still sounds so today.

I could see Beyonce trying to ape this in a year or two with Diplo or something.

It's like it wasn't bad but never taken seriously by the artists themselves; I won't say Freestyle died but it had it's fifteen minutes in the spotlight and passed on; but I think it's a few artists (mostly artists from Florida that has Latino decent) who probably still make one or two Freestyle tunes just cause.
