"Who's gonna help me with some Reggae???"

Ok.. I love me some Reggae but know nothing about it.. I know the very big artists but I want more and don't know how to search for the type of stuff I like.. I think it's Culture but not sure.

This is one of my all time favourite songs of any genres:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GUHVGubdE4

can anyone tell me some more artists/songs/albums to look for that sound like this.. but not Sizzla, I already have almost all his stuff and am up on him already.
I thank you all dearly for helping.

no one? goddamn this board ain't what it used to be 10 years ago.. and this is why I haven't posted regularly in more than 5!!

people used to like to discuss music and share knowldedge and that's why I fell in love with this place.. now if there isn't an opportunity to prove your dick is longer and you know more about music than one of your 'rivals' no one says shit..

anyway. it is what it is.

I didn't even see this post when you put it up. There's a few reggae heads around here, including me, but not a whole lot. And the overall population of the board isn't what it used to be... Anyway, give me a few minutes to think on it, and I'll post some suggestions.

But I seriously doubt you have everything by sizzla.

Anyhow a few artist that are similar to Sizzla. Check Anthony B., I-wayne, Capleton, Buju Banton.

You would probably like some of the older DJ's if it is the culture rythems you like. Check Josey Wales, Yellowman, Brigadeer Jerry, U-roy, Tenor Saw, etc. etc. etc.

Check out some of their youtube videos if you like I can suggest more.

I've collected Sizzla 45's for years. Unfortunately I'm a few years behind and am probably behind by about 250 titles.

Album-wise, he still makes some great stuff. He also does stuff he offers for freebie mix tapes, and then somehow someone unleashes unreleased stuff.

Preamble: the track you linked to is a culture tune (most old Sizzla stuff was), though it's not roots reggae - the original was, but that remix is basically hip hop, at least as far as the beat goes. I'm going to assume that aspect of it isn't critical to you. Also, Sizzla is more in the modern reggae style (singjay) which he and Buju Banton were at the forefront of; before that it tended to be more traditional singers like Dennis Brown, and harmony groups like the Wailers. I'll focus on the singjays but will give you a few recs on the traditional side as well, just in case. In fact, since that's the background, let's start there.

Roots groups:
Abyssinians - Satta Massagana. This is one of the great harmony trio albums. Any roots fan needs to at least hear it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hy5t7jE0SU

Wailing Souls - Firehouse Rock. I love the Souls (more so even than the Wailers) and this is their classic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7cNmmSjyzs

The Twinkle Brothers - Countrymen. Another harmony group, but the strong and smooth lead vocal gives them a different feel. Less rough and rustic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzkNMBIBhXI

Gladiators - Dreadlocks the Time is Now. A compilation of some of the best early work of another classic harmony trio.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e76gjuE5XPE

Singers:
Dennis Brown - The Promised Land. Amazing comp of one of DB's greatest roots albums and some singles from the same time period. "Emanuel God Is With Us" is the truth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAJP3pNfp9U

Dennis Brown - Visions of Dennis Brown. The equal of "The Promised Land."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b7MAg3e_tI

Horace Andy - Dance Hall Style. Contrary to the name this is straight roots with dub flavor, and it's so dark and eerie. Great stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkf1Pm5o-iE

Winston McAnuff - Pick Hits to Click. Pretty four-square roots reggae, but Winston has a nice voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7JUaFA49DQ

Singjays:
Ancient King - Conquering Sound. King is one of the most aggressive and under-appreciated singjays around. This album is fantastic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv-Bu5h7S8A

Lutan Fyah - The King's Son. This guy has a softer voice than many of the others I will name; might be a little easier to get into. His tunes are very pleasant-sounding.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EDZrCz8Fxs

Capleton - Reign of Fire. Capleton is probably one of the major artists you already know, but if not (or if you don't know THIS album), seek this out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Em_b1MzMF8

Anthony B - Black Star. Anthony B's style is a bit of an acquired taste, but once you acquire it he has a deep and very consistent catalog. This is one of my favorites - also "My Hope."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIZ2H74Yxv8

Natural Black - Cool Nuh Black. I've eventually decided I'm not a HUGE fan of this artist, but this particular album is excellent, especially the opening track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwldL85yI3I

Jah Mason - Most Royal. Jah Mason has a strident, reedy delivery - kind of reminds me of this next guy...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XZTLirNn-8

Junior Kelly - Tough Life. Junior never made it to the next level, despite having a bag of good tunes. Too bad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyM4DjhJ4E4

Buju Banton - Til Shiloh. I assume you know this already, but just in case... you must have it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q28IsqN0Rz0

If the singjays are your thing, you may also want to check out:
Turbulence. His reputation is as a bit of a Sizzla clone, but to me he's just off enough that I have a hard time listening to him. "Different Thing" is a pretty nice album though.

Perfect Giddimani. Really unusual style, but his first album (Giddimani) is really good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToS6Q-ynAXU

Black Dillinger. Just listen to this. The rest of the album is not as great, but this song is a stunner.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dB6-ieAFobc

Omar Perry. Son of Lee Scratch! Not the freak his daddy is, but he sings some very nice tunes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpTZSgGYCxs

...Probably enough to keep you busy a while.

downloading your album now!

thanks so much for all this.. been off the grid for a couple days so haven't had a chance to check them out but will do that today!

a far as your first comment I really did like the hip hop beat on that morgan heritage mixed with sizzla's voice, are there any mixtape djs or artists I should check for that use hip hop beats a lot?

No particular producers that I can think of focus on it exclusively, but some do it more than others. Some albums are known for having a fair amount of that. Sizzla's "Taking Over" has a lot of hip hop in it, and "Blaze Up the Chalwa" has some; also try any of these:

Buju Banton - Voice of Jamaica
Bounty Killer - Next Millennium (Bounty is hardcore dancehall though, not a singjay)
Capleton - I-Testament
Jahdan Blakkamoore - Buzzrock Warrior
Perfect - Journey of 1000 Miles
Stephen Marley - Mind Control

one more question.. is there any online store I should be looking at that specializes in reggae? Been looking for ancient kings 'conquering sound' and cant find it anywhere to download, no problem with buying it, but amazon only has it on mp3, and for 8 bucks I may as well buy the actual cd but cant find it.

Only the digital download would be available cheaply nowadays. This ebay listing is the least expensive copies of it I've seen (usually they go for $10 higher): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ancient-King-Conquering-Sound-/380443439615?pt=Music_CDs&hash=item58943231ff

But to answer your question, do a google search for Ernie B's reggae or the VP Records store. Both specialize in reggae for US customers. Ernie B in particular is a goldmine - good prices, great service, and a lot of obscure stuff in stock. Doubt they have Ancient King though, unless they've just been sitting on some copies for years.

EDIT - I had to go look, and they DO have it, for just $12. Shows what I know, and also shows why Ernie B is the shit.

nice, thanks man, i'll check them out.

Let me ask you one more unrelated question, just out of curiosity.
The Marley kids, how are they viewed in Jamaica and the reggae scene in general, are they respected at all or are they the equivalent of when eazy e's kid tried to make a career out of his dads legacy. Obviously Damien has hit it big with Jamrock and the Nas album but is he and the others respected?

Damien is obviously the star of the bunch, but Ziggy has carved out a respectable career and Stephen is thought of as the most musically gifted of the bunch (he writes and produces for himself and Damien, in addition to singing in a reasonable facsimile of his old man). As a group they've done better than most would have expected, though I don't think they'll ever rival Bob of course.

To me personally, the Marley kids have chosen a more mainstream path that is not really my favorite. But I do like some of their stuff. They're certainly artists in their own right.

cool, thanks man.. I've listened to a bunch of the artists you gave me and I've ordered a few things online (yeah I still buy cd's.. rare I know) and downloaded some stuff. Really liked the Capleton stuff i listened to first but at the moment I can't take the Ancient King 'conquering sound' album out of rotation, been listening to it since yesterday on repeat. Will get onto the rest of the artists soon!

It's old-school but I just love a physical product. Especially for albums I care enough about to listen to more than once or twice.

Good deal - if anything strikes your fancy let me know, I can tell you more about that particular artist or maybe one or two that are similar. Capleton is amazing - check "Reign of Fire" first, after that I'd go with "Still Blazin'," "More Fire" and "I-Testament." Unfortunately Ancient King's career never took off - he has just one other album and it's maybe half as good as "Conquering Sound."

¤Personally, I'm a big fan of EARLY 80's reggae as well which was sort of like a transition between roots and dancehall and may appeal to a singjay-fan. The Greensleeves comp. "Biggest dancehall anthems 1979-1982" has choice-cuts by the likes of Linval Thompson, Barrington Levy, Eek-a-mouse, Clint Eastwood&General Saint etc. and is a great introduction to that era and those artists even if there are many great songs missing.

thanks man! don't have much Trojan but I remember seeing the records when I was younger even though I didn't listen to reggae then the covers always jumped out at me because of the logo, being both Greek and also wearing that logo on my jacket as i was a s.h.a.r.p. skinhead.

Will check for them now that my musical tastes have evolved!

basically the emergence of rock steady through to early reggae. I get all my stuff from compilations, so I don't have any super in-depth knowledge, but my favorite stuff from that period is among my favorite music ever.

My two favorite acts that I actually know more than a few songs from are the Maytals and the Ethiopians.

The Maytals - really, anything from their early ska cuts (I Know being a favorite, OG of 6&7 Books is another) up through the Reggae Got Soul and Funky Kingston albums, you can't go wrong. Classics include the originals (as far as I know) of Bam Bam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldsaLw8478Q), Pressure Drop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRSwjhYmAY4), and 54-46 That's My Number (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHrECHho14U).

The Ethiopians - essentially a harmony duo, a bunch of their songs kill me repeatedly.

I'll add two random songs that also crush me and I think represent what appeals to me about this style/era...

Justin Hinds & the Dominos - Carry Go Bring Come (there's an earlier ska version that's also great, but the rock steady one is the one I go back to way more often): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unEzDLs2HjE

Nora Dean - Barb Wire: I know next to nothing about Ms. Dean or this song. But the idea of a boy with bard wire in his underpants kills me. Somebody sampled the 'oh mama' line a while back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jp6cdgLCRQ

I’d rather sojourn into self till I reached the epitome of spiritual splendor
Haters fender bender beat down and ostracize the dreamer
But its more than dreams when the inner light is revealed through the cracks of façade-stephanie (me)
