love his piano tone and his vocal runs when he worked with Thom Bell that was the truth IMO. Philidelphia Freedom" is still the cut.

Most of which aren't really worth a mention compared to his other (earlier) stuff...

I've always meant to read more on that fiasco as I bet there are some stories. John was still putting out some solid stuff at that point but overall his output had really suffered, and I bet he was a real bitch to be around...

and i dug him and Bell on a few things. elton John was on point for me from 70-76 IMO and then Hit and miss, but he had a strong run for a while though.

I'd grab anything from 1970-1976, basically from the self-titled record through "Blue Moves" ...

"Tumbleweed Connection," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Madman Across the Water" are probably his most complete records and his best statements as both artist and pop musician. "Captain Fantastic..." and "Honky Chateau" are up there too.

"Rock of the Westies" is a personal favorite but might be an acquired taste?

"Caribou" and "Don't Shoot Me..." are less coherent but still boast numerous memorable tunes. You can see him slipping on "Blue Moves" but it's still a pretty solid listen (imo).

the first disc of this compilation is pure fire.
it's really everything you need unless you are a huge fan.

(i'm not.)

http://www.amazon.com/Elton-John-Greatest-Hits-1970-2002/dp/0634083732/ref=pd_sim_b_2/191-3058016-9020802

the second disc is whatever.
i rarely listened to it.

but disc one is the business.

it's the best compilation i've seen...
and you can get it for the price of a single CD.

...this one (and a couple of others) is really nice:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x13ZxRV2cLw

This is from the Thom Bell-sessions maxxx was referring to and Bell also wrote the song so it's not really a "real" Elton John song but that John/Taupin-penned stuff is often unbearable to me...

BTW, there was a (lame) remix of this song that was a big hit and that rmx is also the reason I know this track because I wanted to hear the original...

"Ticking" from "Caribou": I don't think Taupin was generally a good lyricist but he actually does a really good job here, and John comes up with a very natural storytelling line - one that sort of mimics how one might relate a tragic narrative. The simple arrangement - just piano and Elton's solo voice, with the occasional bits of overdubbed harmonies and some very sparse synths... it also has one of my favorite Elton piano moments, the set of dissonant chords played over the "you offed a negro waiter who tried to calm you down" line (around 2:40 I think)
http://youtu.be/yYJIGYerpLg

"Talking Old Soldiers" from "Tumbleweed Connection": Another great example of how Elton solo could really own a song. Taupin turns in another pretty strong lyric here, and Elton, like in 'Ticking', crafts a pretty simple song but brings in a lot of variation (like the little detour around the "graveyard for a friend" section)... again, like in Ticking, this one just seems very natural, which was when Elton sounded best, I think. I think Bettye Lavette covered this a few years ago but I don't remember whether it's worth a look or not.
http://youtu.be/GE2MmwUbC_E

"Sugar on the Floor", circa "Rock of the Westies" (1975)
Another tune w/just Elton at the piano - brilliant. I didn't realize until just a year or two ago that this wasn't an Elton song, that it's actually a Kiki Dee song... which is kind of interesting. Etta James took a real strong liking to it (several youtube performances of her doing it in concert even pretty late...). http://youtu.be/et5wlqbHObs

"I Feel Like A Bullet..." - from "Rock of the Westies"
Seriously, I think RotW is in my top three Elton records... it's a very different, more visceral side of Elton. His vocal range on this cut is unfuckwithable; as a composition, it's actually pretty daring (if I remember right, the chorus is actually in a different key than the verses, but you don't notice it unless you're listening for it).
http://youtu.be/PEfReTjAcyg

"This Train..." from "Songs of the West Coast"
Pulled this album out recently and was struck with how well it held up... I'd probably say this is the best cut, though at least half of the album is really memorable. A good simple lyric - maybe a bit overwrought, but whatever - and, most importantly, an almost-too-catchy melody that still manages to be really emotive. The other single from this lp, "I Want Love," has grown better w/time, too.

he had a strong run, however Paul Simon, Burt Bacarach, Paul Mccartney, all got better catelog and all of those cats can't hold Stevie Wonder's glasses.

ELton John had a Great run, however Stevie Wonder changed the game and that is a big difference in the broader picture.

Stevie had better albums and songs from the 60's through early 80's

I love Stevie Wonder and naw Elton ain't got enough rug in his hair to hang with no Stevie Wonder.
