"Why doesn't Premier rap?"

It's funny because nearly all of his peers do. Pete Rock, Q Tip, Diamond D, Large Pro. The only other producer that I could think of that doesn't rap AT ALL is Marley Marl, go figure. But it's still strange to me. Premier loves rap. His knowledge of lyrics is so deep with all those hooks he makes with the scratching. You'd think that maybe he'd wanna give a crack at it? Even if it was just messing around like The Alchemist or Madlib. I feel as though there's something holding him back. What do you think that is?

I respect the fact that he sticks to his core beliefs. I might not agree with all his beliefs but at least he's a man of honor.

He's a legendary producer, and his record speaks for itself. Maybe he realizes he a DJ/Producer, and that that's his strong suit. It could be that he doesn't think it's necessary to wear two hats.

And let's be honest. Of all the producers who rhyme, how many of them are *really* that good at rapping?

I guess it's his way of being a professional or something. But I always figured most producers rap with the intention of having fun doing, that's how most rappers/producers/musicians get started anyway. I just thought maybe Primo had some sort of insecurity about it or something. I'll bet he's written things before, he's too involved in rap not to have been inspired at least once.

I would guess that being an MC has never really crossed his mind. It's quit possible that he never even THOUGHT about trying to rhyme.

two quotes:

"MC's should know their limitations..." (c) Del

"...well, I ain't NEVER been no helluva rapper..." (c) Dr. Dre ( in an interview)

if you put those two quote together to form a theme, I'll be Primo falls somewhere in between.

Marley never considered being a rapper or doing it after he did it once on "In Control Vol.2" but he did rap once and I think he stays too busy with other rappers to start trying to go solo.

... not every producer has or should rap. there are some exceptions, like kanye or dilla, but i never liked that trend. for example 9th, as mentioned, should not rap, stick to what you do best. it's good there are some producers left that don't rap. premo, apollo brown, j.rawls (he doesn't right?)
