At the risk of being ridiculed by everyone on this board, I have to say that I think Cassie is one of the most underrated singers of our time. "Me & U" was eerily bewitching and single-handedly launched Ryan Leslie's career. Her album is not only one of the best albums of 2006, but of the 2000s. People usually tell me that her voice has a soulless, robotic quality to it, but I find it to convey an aloof nonchalant quality that I believe adds to her allure. She sings with an emotional detachment that should be repellent but makes her seem more endearing to me. She's kind of like the hottest girl in high school who you had no chance of smashing, but that didn't stop you from trying to holla. I sense a frailty to her emptiness and vapidity that evokes pity and compassion from me. I even like her music since her album dropped
What I really don't understand is how Cassie seems to be generally despised by the same community that reveres a mediocrity like Aaliyah. The fact of the matter is, Cassie would be as popular if not more so than Rihanna if it hadn't have been for this unfortunate performance on BET:

esp. king of hearts
cassie is just so exceedingly bad she can't even pull off an obvious hit.
her voice IS soulless & robotic---but so is SHE. rihanna ain't taking down no houses, but at least she has some kind of if not likable, drawing & distinct edge to her.
cassie sounds like a fucking 8 year old singing into garage band.
>cassie started a whole shaved head >movement, & couldn't even own IT. > >everybody ran w/it like GOOD IDEA & >all she could do was sigh & flash the >inner caverns of her uterus.

when you mentioned the aloof, robotic quality to her performance... The thing is, though, that Aaliyah maintained that character, creating an alluring air of mystery... but she was still able to convey a certain sense of innocence and (more importantly) likability that has eluded Cassie.
Everybody knew that Aaliyah didn't write or produce and was barely a great singer, but she somehow came across as something more than a puppet. Cassie has never had that... when she sings, you can almost see Ryan Leslie's lips moving. (The kind of material he wrote for her also contributed... a lot of it sounded like a horny adolescent's fantasies of what girls are like.) It also didn't help that he kept releasing videos of himself performing the demos of the songs.

But HIS fantasies were a lot more interesting, a lot more subversive, baffling and funny, weren't they?
R-Les's are like
I love it when they try to get scandalous Even though they know they really can't handle it (They can't handle it?) They can't handle it Try and take me out to dinner, I'll cancel it!

I suppose they were. But this I think is age (as in "times we live in") appropriate. you only get so much subversion.

SO I agree and also expect ridicule... just cause everyone doesnt have a great singing voice does not mean it can't be a good recordable voice, Cassie sounds sexy when she sings...
Peep: "Thirsty" "Hard" "Summer Charm" all good chill songs to me

That was a lil jam right there, sexy spanish guitar vibe & all. R Les did the beat & probably wrote it too, but this one didn't sound as obvious as others. But then again, any song where Diddy is the prominent featured rap verse is doomed from jump. They even tried to spice it up w/ a rmx verse from Busta & one of the Day 26 cats re-singing the 2nd verse, all to no avail. She can't seem to shake the robotic vessel vibe to save her life or career.
but im not really feelin her music...she doesnt really sing that well. i prefer a more soulful voice with a wide range...
