"Let's Get Free: Albums you used to love that aren't that good today"

I've always dug DP'z lyrically but the production has always been lacking IMO. I remember me and my circle loving this album upon release. I was 20 then. I was listening to it this morning and the first track that I liked was track 7 Assassination. There's only about 5 songs I still listen to. Along with the track I listed above, there is We Want Freedom, The Pistol, Be Healthy and Psychology. Is there an album you loved back in the day that you don't care too much for today?

and thank God, most people are finally realizing that I was right years ago when I said the philosophical content of that album was more irresponsible and reprehensible than the most nihilistic gangsta rap.

They whole philosophy revolved around robbin pizza boys and shit to buck
the system. Gangsta cats do it cuz they feel like they got to. Show him
where he ain't GOT to and you might be able to change his perspective.
But if a cat be on that DP shit you caint tell him nothin cuz he feel like
he doin it for some kind of purpose and bigger plan. And don't get me
wrong. I love that DP was tryina think on another level but they shit
was misguided in alotta instances. Shit like "They Schools" only said
the white man education ain't worth shit but didn't offer no alternative
to it. It just had Brothers wantin to drop outta school. NOW the Brother
is gone HAVE to be on that rob a pizza man shit. It was quite irresponsible
when you really think about it.

The one that sticks out for me is Nastradamus. I used to cop all kind of pleas for that album. Revisited recently and. . . yeah, no.

Yes, I used to be a Nas fan.

Let's Get Free is a good one too. That album has aged horrifically.

Kweli's Quality hasn't held up very well at all.

A lot of that "conscious" rap from the early 2000s just sounds terrible today.

came to a similar conclusion trying to re-play Train of Thought this year. that conscious rapper renaissance really wasn't as indelible as the late 80s early 90's rappers who inspired them.

I will admit that I'm not a big fan of Dead Prez but their 1st album was good for what it was, "Let's Get Free" was never on a level of good or great beats but it was more about the positive lyrics and the revitalization of black power in rap music aka a movement that was kind of missing in rap music for a while.

The album was very long, some songs are skippable, but overall it's a decent album, but I wouldn't say it's was never worth a purchase or not good; but I think many bought into Dead Prez cause of hype but sometimes hype is what gets people into checking out good albums.
