"The greatest pop act I've heard in 20 years....Chairlift"
Sun May-13-12 05:03 AM by denny

These two got great music on their latest album 'something'. Really can't say enough about someone making good pop music in a new way like that.

Evoking so many different influences and still standing on it's own. They got tunes...and a creative image/video thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrM5SOGw9T8

and an incredibly beautiful video here:

another interesting video....great lyrics:

So many incredible things:

thanks for introducing me to them. Haven't been this excited about a new act in a long time. 20 years apparently.

If I remember correctly....I told you that I was reminded of Steve Vai's first album when you first played them for me. This is what I was thinking of:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5J2sMq18qs

A little sidetracked here....but Chairlift's music, lyrics, imagery definitely have a strong post-modern philosophy influence. Similar to someone like David Byrne but less ambiguous:

"There's a system of symbols that no one will vouch for
Everyone uses, but no one believes"

I'm a douchebag....and that lyric sounds inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Not to mention a general 'natural history' perspective of human evolution that always retreats into boy/girl/love territory when things get too heavy. 'When you look at me and smile'.

The lyrics sound like if Morrissey was a physicist. Or perhaps a linguistist (that might not be a real word)

12. "Influences?"
In response to Reply # 0

Sorry to geek out like this but I'm genuinely surprised and impressed by these two. I probly shoulda been clearer when I said 'pop' act in the post title though.

Wanted to list the influences I can hear in their music....Strange because a hip list of influences doesn't always equate to good quality art. But in this case I think it does.

Depeche Mode
Talking Heads
PJ Harvey
Sade
HallnOates
Radiohead
The Smiths
The Pixies
Kate Bush (DEFINITELY)
LFO
Genesis
The Cure
REM
Sinead OConner
New Order

I'm not a huge fan of all those groups...but respect em all. Am I crazy? Any others you can think of?

Last question....why do I seem to be alone in my interest in this band? I don't know ANYONE who is taken like me. Weird.

you said Sade?? HA!HAH!HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! her forehead is going to appear in the dark and scary you from now until halloween.

maybe in White world they got something, but in the rest of the population they are a dime a dozen snow ball act.

They're playing Toronto tomorrow night. Opening for Gotye....I was tempted to go but don't usually like going to a show to see an opening band. The sound is usually second-rate and the set could be less than 45 minutes.

I wouldn't imagine them being particularly interesting live.....what's their setup? I'm guessing the arrangements are more instrument-based for the live show?

The same reason I didn't go to their show at the Greek Theater the day after the FYF.

I couldn't rationalize laying down $40-$45 to see the opening act, and then leaving.

Gotye should be opening for Chairlift

I only got to see them at the FYF

probably off of name recognition from your post

the setup is ordinary, guitar, bass, keys

but she is a star

the energy is great

it's a lot of fun

her voice live will impress anyone

a lady behind me even commented how great she sounded

MUST SEE!

Less electronic in the production....smaller budget....less elaborate sonically. More jangly....more guitars. Still got really catchy tunes. I wanna say that the Cure influence is bigger on the first album.

It's good but not as good as 'something' imo.

I dont really care for the new Chairlift. Kind of boring, imo. Their last one was a lot catchier.

I'm kinda confused why people aren't hopping on board too. Not sure about the Prince/MJ angle....but yah. The songs are all creepers. 2 or 3 full listens to the album should hook most people in.

You got a fave track? or tracks?

I like sidewalk safari and wrong opinion alot....but there's not a weak track on the album imo.

I'm transferring it to my phone

ipod

and it's streaming through my head any other time

The MJ angle hit me on 'Cool As A Fire'

when she gets to 'I'm alive...'

if you can't feel that, you might not be alive

and of course a lot of the programming could be circa Purple Rain era Prince

fav is probably 'Take It Out on Me'

love the break at the end

'Take it out on me' sounds alot like Sade to me. Especially her vocal delivery.

Perhaps I'm revealing some sexism in my psyche....but I kinda assumed that the dude was the 'producer' or responsible for the music while she was the singer. From what I've gathered since....it seems like they have a true partnership. She does the majority of the writing....the lyrics (which are great), the melodies, the changes.....and the dude flushes the songs out with instruments/programming. Even then, she plays instruments and programs as well. So it seems like their roles are somewhat interchangeable.

The bass playing is really great. I'm guessing it's the dude. But a song like 'I belong in your arms' is a good example.

but I have to admit that they are dope and only improving with every project. They are still a little under the radar in some circles since blogs and sites like PFork don't gush over them nearly as much as other bands.

My wife is a huge fan, so I was just tagging along, really. Some of his stuff is great, but other tracks leave me cold.

His band is pretty tight, and he had three different synth & percussion stations that he kept moving between all night, which was kind of cool, but it was fucking cold (last show of the season at the Molson Amphitheatre), and only about three quarters full, which sucked a lot of the energy out of the place.

listening to "Something" on Spotify right now and it immediately sounds way better than I remember ever liking "Does You Inspire You". will definitely be keeping this in rotation for a bit.
