Danny Brown, who I'm a HUGE fan of, sounded more obnoxious than he ever has with the misogyny. Cool beat, and I definitely appreciate the scratch hook, but overall I don't think I'm gonna cop that 10" because my tolerance for over-the-top vulgarity is weaning.

This dude on the trailer....who is that? Not a fan. That beat is THEE shit though, wow.

One of the things that irks me the most is rappers rapping about Dilla on posthumous Dilla tracks. Hate it. If that's what the whole album's gonna sound like, I find it a little unfortunate. Just rap about whatever...you don't have to mention Dilla just because you were called on for the project (at least in my opinion).

I will say that I'm really excited about hearing the production on here. "Detroit Madness" had the vintage Jay Dee sound from the archives, the trailer beat is some filthy shit I've never heard either...the sound (at least on my laptop) reminded me of a dirtier "Won't Do" (top 10 Dilla beat and possibly a sample of the style he was working on before his death)...we've all heard that Danny Brown beat before, but it's cool.

Why won't they just release his beat tapes? Seriously, they play out like albums, ain't no need for rappers. If it were me I would just have Dave Cooley master his beat tapes and put em out, as is. Make a whole collection of them just like Medicine Show.

his beats are better than rappers (at least when unproduced by HIM).

Ma Dukes being involved for the promo & $$$ but the music side (features, putting the album together, etc...) should be ST because I think they would make the best product.

Granted I could be all wrong and this could be incredible when it drops...cause this video is all I know about who's on it....but my hopes aren't high.

even musically... all they'd do is drop a beat cd... re-drop that beat cd... make a video series about the beat cd.... drop a t-shirt connected to the beat cd.... re-release the beat cd.

no shots, I'm just sayin.

Nick Speed, Danny Brown, Guilty Simpson, DJ Dez, Big Tone, Finale...
COME ON. Amazing talent right there.

I think some people are just used to being spoonfed small portions of Dilla from the ST cafeteria. Give the project a chance.

these things just end up being Dilla dicklove fests that really serve no real purpose or shed any light on him as an artist that people don't already know
if they manage to avoid hyperbole for the most part I'd be shocked

It's fuckin pathetic how they handle his shit. Don't these people KNOW what most of the internet has already heard. If what was said about Dilla is true, we haven't heard 30% of his shit, including the rarest beat tapes available on the net.

What happened to integrity anyway? The Illa J joint proved that there is good quality TRULY unheard Dilla material. Spare me the garbage ass rapper and just gimme some good, mastered Jay Dee beats. PLEASE. FUCK!

His estate is completely hopeless. Absolutely no integrity or respect for his work. Always need to inject some useless rapper when it would be 1000x better without them. I give Illa J a pass cause he's his brother, but even then I just listen to the instrumental joint. Stones Throw gets how to do it, but they don't ever get to handle his work anymore. I just... I've had enough. True fans will never get what they want.

The only unheard beat on this is "Detroit Madness." I mean, reusing the "Dooinit" and "Flyyyyy" beats? Uninspiring to say the least.

This is a travesty and I understand that they are trying to keep Dilla's Legacy alive and make money to pay off the debt he left behind with medical bills, but why can't they do this with honor and integrity?!?! This pisses me off to see one of my inspirations music being cheapened with thought processes that Dilla's would not even of approved of. For Real, y'all reached out to ESHAM?!?!

To record labels and even directly Dilla's family who are overseeing these projects :

Personally, I'm a fan of most of the MCs that dilla used. To me, he knew what songs would go with what rapper. Even if they were simple rappers (guilty Simpson) he knew what beats would go best with them. He had a great ear for that.

On the rebirth, that element isn't there.

I hear you...frank and dank are more simple..more "street" rap. Probably a better example. I don't like frank and dank on anything but dilla beats, and that's because dilla knew what they would sound good over.

Guilty sounds good over a lot of shit. But his dilla tracks seemed like they were made for him. Just one example

Several interviews gloss over the fact that Dilla doesn't "make beats with rappers in mind". He says that people like Pete and Premier do, but he never really does. But the thing about his beats is that they're so diverse to begin with that a rapper can basically pick one that makes the most sense to them. He had a beat tape that had beats that Common, De La, Jay Electronica, Show + AG, SV and The Visionaries used. Very stylistically different rappers picking from the same basket.

True.

I'm not sure what was going on in dillas head. But I'm sure u are right. He just made so many beats that are so diverse, that an MC could pick a beat that matched their personal style.

I'll ride for the beats on "Detroit Madness" and the horribly-titled "DILLATROIT," along with the dude Quelle doing a nice job on "Houseshoes Was Spinning."

Other than that?

Tons of no-name bums, a ridiculous album cover, and beats that any Dilla fan worth their salt has already ran hundreds of times.

On a somewhat-related note.....has anyone peeped this odd beef between Detroit cats and some dude named DJ Live Longshot on Twitter? Kind of disturbing. I have no idea who DJLL is (besides seeing that he leaked the snippet for "Detroit Madness" a few months back), but he's on some kind of mission to uncover the shadiness in the Detroit rap scene. What's up with that?

Hes not uncovering shit. He's a Stan who got called out and now he's going in hard on revenge. From what I know... He was a Stan for house shoes, and random axe. He used to live in Detroit, but recently moved. He got thrown off stage at a random axe show because he just jumped up there and black milk was like get this dude out if here. So he got bitter and started talking shit. Now he has some sort of vendetta against Detroit hip hop because he was rejected by the key players.

video one:
Rebirth of Detroit announcement video with Ma Dukes & Jonathan Taylor (YMG)
announcing this project last year.

I'm still not sure who this Jonathan Taylor negro is, but his presence/energy in that video was mad suspect. I don't generally fuck with anyone who talks like they're running for office.

especially in the music business.

Arty Erk out the picture...faux slick talking Detroit negro blowing up the dead homies mom's head (while his eyes if you look closely appear to have two hands wringing each other in each of his eyeballs). not good.

video two:
Danny Brown "Detroit State of Mind" mini-documentary from a few months ago.
Danny Brown en route to DILLA DAY benefit is haggling with JT on the phone about billing & $.
Danny Brown and entourage pull up in snowy parking lot, JT appears in parking lot with empty cup ready to "drink wit' y'all"
-cut to after performance-
Danny Brown is looking for JT for his money.
JT is nowhere to be found.

Today...I just heard a Jay Dee project that made "Champion Sound" sound like the Beatles "Revolver".

Schitt is turrible.

Call Hex Murda...alert the Goons!

Busta and Jay Electronica were never booked for dilla day. the promoter pulled the wool over our eyes. I was at the show. my friend was an MC performing that night (not naming names). They just put them on the flier and promoted the show, then attempted to contact busta and Jay's management, but never actually booked them. a lot of detroiters were pissed that they were played like that. thats how JT (the promoter in the video) runs his biz.

He's (JT) the one that needs to be blamed for this album sounding the way it does. Not ma dukes, not the fact dilla has passed...JT fucked it up with his politics. If stones throw, house shoes, wajeed, kareem riggins, etc.. would have put it together it would be solid. Not the best Dilla album, and not as good as albums Dilla made himself, but it wouldnt have sounded like this.

PS - If you really want to support Dillas mom and put bread in her pocket, mail her a check. This album was made for her, but she isnt getting %100 of the money. JT is getting his cut, they have to recoup expenses, and im sure some of the artist were paid. So, shes probably only getting a percentage. Like HouseShoes said on twitter... when JT called shoes to talk about Rebirth when it was first started, JT said "I'm going to make millions off this, and so should you." and shoes said fuckthat

Shrug. Dilla beats plus the MC's are cool.

The mix on these beats is phenomenal. Wayyy crispier than on the lo-fi leaked beat CD's cats heard them on before.

"Detroit Madness" is a classic track, on par with "Featuring Phat Kat". That shit is amazing.

You telling me "Jay Stay Paid" sons this album? Only revisionism and personal relationships could spur that outlook, IMO.

"Jay Stay Paid" is LIGHT YEARS better than this album.

sorry, it's hyperbole like that that needs to be hockey checked.

Hopefully the tapes that appeared in the UHF storage sale will contain something worthy of the hype this release has garnered. But the turd in the punchbowl is this Jonathan Taylor character. I don't hold Ma Dukes guilty for anything. I understand she wanted to be back in the city with her family (not L.A.), I understand she has medical bills of her own as well as debt left by Dilla's medical expenses, I understand she thought this guy would come through for not just her and Dilla's legacy...but shining the spotlight on some up and comer talents in Detroit.

That didn't happen with this project. This project is 5 notches below "Jay Loves Japan".

The only thing classic about "Detroit Madness" is the vintage beat....I guess Phat Kat is cool on there but Illa J absolutely kills it in the WORST way. That chorus is one of the low points on that bullshit album.

If they had left half those beats alone like they did on Jay Stay Paid, then you might have a semblance of an argument. In fact, that was JSP's saving grace. Half of those tracks WERE the beat tape instrumentals that we'd been waiting to hear on an official release. Not "song" after "song" of rap features that Dilla never would've co-signed.

Who the fuck is Boldy James? Why is that dude from the Cool Kids on here? I fuck with Quelle Chris HEAVILY, and his is one of the three songs on there I'd actually listen to, but was he even involved with Dilla back when he was still alive? The integrity just isn't there. Pete Rock did a really good job with JSP, especially in hindsight after this shit rock.

...I didn't allow myself to listen to those joints, even though I have a few. Cuz I knew at some point in the future, they'd be getting a proper release and I'd be salty if I'd already been bumping the whole album for years by that point. But I've got more self control than most.

That being said, I'm really not interested in hearing ANYONE spit on Dilla beats now. Especially a bunch of cats I've never heard of. I listen to the official snippets just to let me know which beattape joints I can take off "hold". I still wanna support Ma Dukes, though.

disappointing. so much potential but very much squandered. horribly A&Red. a few really strong tracks but various forgettable tracks a few straight up wack ones.

the best tracks are just songs, not 4 minute long RIP's and Remember When's, that might be cool for a specific tribute song, but makes for a project with very limited replay value.

also, how are you gonna have one MC diss House Shoes at the beginning of the album, then name a song after him at the tail end?

Yeah, it's like what was said earlier in that we understand Dilla has passed, but you don't have to get on a track by him and reinforce that every.single.time. Just rap on the beat like you would have if he was still here. You don't have to drop his name in the verses.

wait - didn't Quelle name his own song? If anything, it seems very diplomatic of them to let him keep his original song name. Because if they did - Imagine the bitch 'n' moan sessions then. "YO! JT Changed The Song Titles AND He's The Debil!"

and is just one point in a long list of points that could be singled out to show why JT sucked balls as an A&R on this.

In response to Reply # 105

that was Raach leaving a voicemail for JT, not ranting about someone anonymous.
& the things hes saying on there only seem to further show how bad JT was at A&R'ing and dealing w/ the artists he reached out to be involved w/ this project - giving ultimatums, throwing around accusations, using guilt as incentive, etc etc.

completely ridiculous

what i don't get is he how thinks that voicemail would "out" Raach in some way?
it only makes JT & the project look bad.

was telling me that the label didn't send out the tracklisting w/ the featured artists until the first week orders had already been placed,
& they even refused upon requests for such.

like they knew the line-up was wack & would only hurt them once announced.

notice they didn't print any guest names on the back of the CD either

seems like just a very shady project all around.

I pretty much predicted this, but the editors didn't want to go in like that as it was only tangentially related to the rest of the piece.

It's not as bad as most of you are making it out to be but I'll say that half the album is pretty decent but the other half is kind of subpar but these days what do you expect with a compilation of this sort where they stuck with Detroit only artists (and we can guess the majority of J-Dilla's close rap friends didn't want anything to do with the project) but the one's who did contribute they did their thang which gave this project some hope to be worth a purchase.

The "Dilladetroit" & "The Cake Boys" joints were dope, the joint with Phat Kat would've been nice if Illa J. didn't sing on it or if he sung on key it would've been much better but it's still aight.

I'll admit using the "Flyyy" beat was kinda cheesy and also Amp Fiddler reusing that Q-Tip joint wasn't so fresh but Amp's song was so dope regardless (I think Amp just used that same batch of old DATs he got from that person who broke into Dilla's crib and Dilla said he could do anything with those beats he wanted to with 'em & he has been doing just that, lol).

I'm not mad at them for using some of the "Jay Stay Paid" beats, I kind of figured that would happen but remember not everyone even listened to that album (sad right) but what kind of pissed me off was the very last song, that beat was already used plenty of times and even had Ma Dukes talking on it before, c'mon why end the album off with that joint?

109. "I Guess All Those Artists Were Just That Artists Not Managers"
In response to Reply # 104

I think the reason why people like Questo, Houseshoes, and a whole list of people we can name didn't get involved to do this project with Ma Dukes instead of this guy is cause they're are just artists with questionable managers, lawyers, & labels of their own.

They're too busy & worried with getting their music career on the right path than try to straighten up J-Dilla/Ma Dukes' contract problems they had going on for so long (cause they probably didn't know the law well enough to guide her in the first place).

You see how Busta is always going from one label to another. Questo own his own imprint & website but they're on Def Jam (and trying hard to keep that) plus with their weekly duties with TJFS they ain't in much of a position to be in Detroit every minute on this project. Common, been busy acting, plus trying to bring his own rap career back around, he already probably got 2 to 3 lawyers working for him between music contracts & movies deals. Q-Tip, now this is the person I thought would be perfect for doing a project like this but he was going thru crazy issues with that documentary a year ago but who knows why he's a private person & we don't know much about what him & Ma Dukes have talked about but obviously not much. Illa J., well he might be 2nd in command on this project but I doubt him & J-Dilla were both thinking in the same direction when it came to music most of the time but he's been under the guidance of T-3, Houseshoes, Michael Ross, & Ralph J. Rice so maybe he's taken some legality issues from them to know what to do.

All in all I think many are complaining more about the music part of this album rather than the money & legal issues.

....
I'd like to clear everything up that is going on.

I worked on this project as an engineer and co-mixed two tracks(jay dees revenge & Detroit Game) plus a third (b-side) birthright.

I asked my name to be kept off credits as I felt it was honorable to leave those as Dilla produced...I also think it would have been honorable to leave them as instrumentals...When we received a flash drive of all the songs recorded for the album I had a horrible breakdown at the studio and we shut down for 3 days. I hated it. It was and is a disgrace to Dilla.

I helped and I know that my colleagues helped because we all are concerned and love Ma Dukes (Jay's Mom). Ma Dukes is very sick and can't even pay for medicine so we helped in hope of getting money for her since she needs it.

JONATHAN TAYLOR FUCKED UP EVERYTHING! These songs could have been good if the right artists were picked and their verses were produced. A few people do deliver on the record, but I'm overall disappointed. JONATHAN TAYLOR is the reason why so many mediocre verses were put on this thing. He doesn't pay artists their due money, he is trying to fool Ma Dukes and is controlling her money. Watch the Danny Brown pitchfork video and you will see that JT didn't pay him for the Dilla show. He is dishonest and the reason why this album was released. It's horrible that we have to see a legacy get tainted...I love Dilla and this makes me sad.

I hope this provides some insight into why this CD was released and the unfortunate outcome of Ma Dukes not getting the help she deserves. Send Ma Dukes money before you buy this album. If you love Dilla help her...don't put money in Jonathan Taylor's pocket so he can rob Ma Dukes in front of our eyes.

Thanks. Go listen to Welcome to Detroit or Donuts...

... how do we not know that post is from a disgruntled Dilla head? I mean it sounds true, but who knows. And by no means am I trying to rebuttle that it isn't true but this is the internet. Personally I haven't purchased after checking the stream, wondering if those dollars I contribute will actually go to Ma Dukes, and essentially the mouths of his children. I just hope the situation gets better for the Yanceys before it gets way out of control.

Just came across this Rebirth of Detroit album and heard Requiem.

Do you think Matrimony sounds like Requiem?
