"Primo and Clark Kent speak on Rakim being extra finnicky w beats"
Wed May-02-12 11:08 AM by ABROCK33

if this is the case how in the hell could he come w that whack crap on "seventh seal" then?

perplexing

people get on lyricsts like Canibus and Ras Kass for haveing no ear for beats and rhymin over anything

Rakim is seemingly the opposite in that he has sabatoged his own later career by being picky yet he has A list beatmeisters willing to craft special beats just for him

LMAO at Rakim walking out the studio on cats even when he likes their beats
-------------

Clark Kent speaking on it:
http://www.complex.com/music/2011/11/dj-clark-kent-tells-all-the-stories-behind-his-classic-records-part-2/rakim-guess-whos-back-1997

The thing about Rakim is that he’s extra particular. A bunch of producers had sat with him and played him music, but it seemed like he only had a level of respect for me and DJ Premier. He knew there were other producers out there, but we were the only two that he’d be like, ‘I’ll listen to what you’re telling me.’

“Even if Rakim picked a beat he liked from a certain producer, if he showed up at the session and saw the producer and didn’t respect him, he’d walk back out. Even if he liked the beat. He’d be like, ‘I’m not dealing with this dude. Get out, let me go record the record.’

Primo speaking on it:

http://www.complex.com/music/2011/02/dj-premier-outtakes
On working with Rakim

“He’s very picky. It’s hard to get Rakim to jump on anything. He doesn’t like anything. You have to go all out to please him. And that’s cool, he can do that, he’s got the leverage. He takes a while . That’s the only thing. You have to be like, ‘Come on, Ra, when am I going to see you again?’ Several months later he’ll just be like, , ‘Yo, G. Yo, I’m about to lay that, you nah’m sayin’? Yeah, G. Word, G. Right, right, G.’ That’s Ra.”

I was thinking the same thing not too long ago after watching one of his interviews.

The same could be said for a lot of emcees with "intelligent" lyrics and articulate deliveries..

Jay Elec - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fypz6xC1cTI - st-st-st-st-ss-s-s-sstu-stutt-stutt-st-s-s-stut-stutte-stutte-st-stutters ll-lil-l-l-l-lil-l-l-li-li-li-lik-like a like a m-mu-m-mu-muthafucka! No wonder it's takin' so damn long.

Mos Def - sometimes he really be sounding like the character he played in that horrible Bruce Willis movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBR707CHrGE

NAS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXIl1O2o1lA This interview is gold. Starts it off obviously buzzed/drunk.. ends it high as hell.

..more clarity, focus, calm, and confidence in their speaking.

Then, on the flipside, you got cats who sound mildly retarded on the mic, but are fairly articulate in their interviews (or at least more articulated than on their songs) like 50, Lil B, Weezy, etc.. when they are sober, that is.

the bigger you are the more insecure and also expectations and that Ego get the best of the best.

truth is being labeled as the Best to ever do it has also crippled alot of his creativity and he ended up being afraid of doing certain things for fear of a backlash.

once you are called great or considered as such then expecations and defense come into play and if you fall short of expectations then folks start looking at you cross eyed and side ways.

Rakim is a Great MC no doubt, however had he kept it moving with putting out more albums, he would be in the same boat as Nas or 2Pac with alot of people who hold a banner under his very name for the time he came out.

it seems like Ra pigeonholed himself and drank his own kool aid so to speak

he became a victim of reading his own press clippings

post Eric B he has been tryin to rap instead of just doing what comes natural

their was no reason for him to change his style/cadence and dumb down his rhyme scheme
