"Looking back at NAS "Street's Disciple" some of his best..."

Looking back at NAS "Street's Disciple" some of his best work was on here to me. In terms of songs that is, not LP as a whole maybe. The theme was kind of dope and he had some of the most diverse work I've seen by any MC. What are your thoughts on this 2004 LP?

Tracks I like...

Rest of My Life
War
Thief's Theme
Just A Moment
Reasons
Remember the Times
Bridging the Gap
Sekou Story
Nazareth Savage

there were a few others also.......... (I hated Serious feat. AZ wasn't on there)

Looking back

1. What do you think of LP?
2. What is your favorite track on LP
3. Where does it rank with other NAS joints

>1. What do you think of LP?

Since the world is stuck on Illmatic, if I had to cut this down to the same format, the remaining tracks (in order of their appearance as it is) would be:

Intro
A Message to the Feds...
Nazareth Savage
Sekou Story
Just a Moment
Street's Disciple
Virgo
Remember the Times (Intro)/Remember the Times
No One Else in the Room
Thief's Theme

That's a no skipper to me. AND it would leave off several decent joints.
Change the sequencing...promote it with "No One...", "Virgo", and "Thief's Theme"...
Make "Bridging the Gap" and "You Know My Style" non-album singles/leaks/"b-sides" to the singles...
Change the name of the artist, and it'll be bulletproof, from where I sit.
But that's me.

>2. What is your favorite track on LP

I couldn't even tell you...the format I laid out above is dang near flawless to me...but I will point out that it SHOCKS me how ridiculously well Nas was able to pull off an MJ-inspired record like "No One...".

>3. Where does it rank with other NAS joints

My opinion doesn't count among the almighty tastemakers, because I'm not big on Illmatic. But I'm a huge Nas fan, and my favorite from Nas goes back and forth between this and God's Son (which also has it's flaws, but...I FEEL that album).

THANK YOU re: your thoughts on God's Son. That's EASILY Nas' most underrated album in my opinion. People don't even mention that when they talk about Nas' best work, but shit...

I mean, you mentioned that you "felt it". I couldn't agree more. There's so much emotion on that album, IMO. You could tell he poured his soul into it. His mom had just died, the beef with Jay had simmered a bit but was still alive, he explained that, the beats were (for the most part) soulful but hard-hitting.

Yea...I couldn't have put it better. That album had a lot of FEELING to it. Perhaps more than any other Nas album. That's not to say that it's his best, but Nas has always been the storyteller FOR the streets and rarely do you catch a glimpse in to his OWN feelings. On God's Son, the entire album was full of his own story and I think that is a major positive. God's Son is probly in my top 3 Nas albums, but that's without giving it much thought.

But while I'm here, I'll answer Thanes' question about Street's Disciple. Funnily enough, while we're talking about a Nas album with introspection and feeling, this might come in 2nd to God's Son. Like you both already said, as always, a double album was unnecessary and if you make this a regular single-disc, it's probly among his best and maybe even talked about as one of the better albums of the 00's. Just too bad it was so watered down. And for that reason, just like every other double album ever, I hardly listen to it. I Do remember loving Message 2 the Feds, Sekou's Story, War, and many others. But it's too watered down. A lot of his best work is on here tho, I do agree.

Yep, I agree with you. God's Son overall is a GREAT LP. With SD, he was just so creative that I can't overlook what this LP could have been. Just like if I Am would not have leaked on Napster in 98. Yep, I was in college and downloaded it as well. Hell, he was and is my favorite MC. God's Son and SD was really where Nas was at in his life at the time. No many MC's have been BRAVE enough to go that deep

For sure. I agree with you totally. He definitely dove deep on Street's Disciple I Just wish it was a single album cause a lot of stuff coulda been left off. But still, TONS of gems on that shit.

And yea the I Am... debacle is still really sad. So many gems were supposed to be on that shit. Was just listening to a couple of the "Lost Tapes" tracks from I Am...the other day actually.

Nas is also either my #1 or #2 as far as favorite MCs.

I agree. I never understood the hate Gods Son received.

It has some meh moments but Nas is one of those dudes where if the album isn't perfect, he gets unfairly sh!t on (see Common)

Its actually pretty consistent.

Made U Look still might be his best single...

I actually prefer Last Real Ni##a alive to Ether and Takeover...

that closer was DOPE and ballsy...

it was also ballsy of him to pick the acoustic version of the Pac track when the estate offered him a choice..and I'm probably WAY in the minority but I like that song...

I could go on but I don't want to post jack TOO bad.

Gods Son is a dope album. Its just 3 or 4 songs too long from being GREAT.

I always go back and forth with HHID being the fourth best nas album. (I'm in that group that thinks Stillmatic deserved those 5 mics.)But God's Son is very consistent. a 4/5 maybe a 4.5/5 even. I don't like "Hey Nas" or "Zone Out" at all.

I'm not sure I "prefer," it because the disses were fun as hell.
But, I enjoy this track JUST as much, obviously on a different level. Because this one actually explains the story instead of just one of them dissing the other without any explanation.
Also, the closing line is THE BEST.

"I was Scarface, Jay was Manolo/it hurt me when I had to kill him, and his whole squad for dolo"...so much truth in that line.

Agree here also. Hell no you're not in the minority. That acoustic version is DOPE. Great decision by Nas.

that was really the first album that got killed by bootleggers.

I remember Lost Boyz joint being the first album that I remember being pushed back by the label, I think it came out like a year late.

But I Am was the first one that I recall being ruined by the bootleg.

The most common list for the bootleg version is:

Fetus
Poppa Was A Player
Drunk By Myself
Blaze A 50
Wanna Play Rough
Sometimes I Wonder
The Hardest Thing to Do Is Stay Alive
U Gotta Love It
Amongst Kings
Pray
Find Ya Wealth
Day Dreaming, Stay Scheming
Project Windows (original version is the illest)
My Worst Enemy
The Rise & Fall

What I'm not clear on is what songs that actually made the album would've been on the double. I'm not sure what he went back and recorded. I want to say the Primo joints weren't on the original so getting those two joints was a plus but overall it was a tragedy because the original double would've changed a lot of shit.

I'm also not sure of the track listing. I've heard different things where it was a concept and he was supposed to open with Fetus and then die at the end of the 1st album and then open the 2nd one with Amongst Kings when he's in the after life.

Would love to get the real version one day straight from him on how it was supposed to be released.

would have been VERY dope.

I had heard it was supposed to open with Fetus and close with Undying Love...but I hadn't heard about CD2 opening with Amongst Kings.

I agree, I'd love to hear it in its original form. Or at least get an official tracklist or something so I could make my own...

Damn shame

I heard AZ was pretty pissed about that.

But yeah going into any double album except for a few obvious classics you have to expect some bloat or throwaways. I think Nas did a good job overall and has some of my favorite Nas songs. Gotta respect that he didn't fill the album with guest appearances, he seemed on a mission and even if it wasn't perfect it was a good effort. But personally if he released it as a single album and done it proper then it could have been one of his best albums.

My fav:
A Message To The Feds
Nazareth Savage
American Way
Disciple
Just A Moment
Reason
Virgo
Remember The Times
Bridging The Gap
War (Love this song)
Thief's Theme

All very well said. In the world of double-albums, Nas made one of the better ones for sure. It wasn't LOADED with filler which is the issue most of them suffer from.

>American Way

I'm surprised this song doesn't get talked about more. I thought it was a pretty good protest song, less dopey stuff than Nas usually works into these things. It felt really heartfelt to me, more than him telling the schoolkids about Africa in God's Son. But more than that I thought Q-Tip's beat was CRAZY. I don't understand how he doesn't get more production work when he can still turn out stuff like this

He must turn shit down? Cause otherwise I don't get it. He has like a 90% success rate making dope beats. The Renaissance was perfectly produced IMO. Yet I never hear him guest-producing for anyone else.

"War" is my shit. It actually is the top played Nas song on my iTunes account. Can't quite call it my favorite Nas song--World Is Yours & Take It In Blood edges it out--but it is in my top 5.

1. What do you think of LP?
as a fan of Nas' recent work (unlike most people here) i never cared for this album. its a 3/5. there's probably 12 great songs on here and could make for a good album, but this is the album where I'd say production held nas back and just boring song concepts.

2. What is your favorite track on LP
I love the opening track "A Message to the Feds" and the title track. Two of nas' most underrated songs in his catalog

3. Where does it rank with other NAS joints

Ill
Still
IWW
HHID
Gods Son
Untitled
SD
I Am
Nastro

relistened.

and damn if "Getting Married" isn't one of Nas' best written songs.

Like he gets so vivid on what his wedding day would be like. And the beat is dope. Truly great, underrated song.

to worst lineup of albums, of course after Illmatic (and then some say IWW is better but blah).

This album is always mentioned toward the bottom, but it might have been my 3rd or 4th favorite Nas album. I would say it lacked having standouts like Made you look or even Got yourself a gun as a single, but it had some of his most diverse album cuts that didn't have that generic ass "East Coast non sampled album cut" sound that he was famous for having.

I was going to make pretty much the exact same thread a while ago but never got around to it.

Like many have said, the album is bloated but honestly some of his absolute best moments are on this thing.

Its a DAMN SHAME someone didn't talk him into trimming this because he was in a zone a lot of these...

He took some risks on this album when you think about it- and a lot of them did pay off.

I don't even think it would have to be short single album. I like a lot of disc 1.

Really take off You Know My Style, then from disc 2 add tracks like Thiefs Theme, Bridging the Gap, War...

f*ck it I'd even keep-

Virgo

Getting Married (important song for Nas at the time)

and even Suicide Bounce (don't judge me but I've always like that sh!t...says something about being a "rebel to your power structure" or something...and I love the line "yall not relentless/ yall dumb/ yall just forgot about the consequences" or whatever haha)

Another slept on Nas album IMO.

make for a great album.

I'd go with this

1 Intro
2 A Message to the Feds
3 Streets Disciple
4 Nazareth Savage
5 Rest of My Life
6 Virgo
7 Thief's Theme
8 Just A Moment
9 Serious
10 American Way
11 Remember The Times
12 No One Else In The Room
13 Bridging The Gap
14 War
15 Reason

Obviously, Serious should've been included.

I always loved the lyrics and even the beats to Sekou Story and Live Now but just always thought changing his voice to sound like a female was weird as hell and ruined those joints. Those songs would've been ILL if he used them as his reunion with Foxy doing the female parts.

I agree that Nas took some chances that definitely paid off of this album but I think the double album structure makes those chances seem a bit more random as if he was trying to do everything with no real rhyme or reason.

If you break it down to 1 album in a way like I did, it becomes more cohesive even with the random shit.

I go back and forth with the albumdefinitely on the lower end of his albumsbut if it was 1 album like I have it, it would really go up on the list.

Life We Chose
Project Windows
Come Get Me (maybe the worst Nas/Primo collabo but it's still raw as hell)
Last Words (Nas destroys this)
Family (w/ Mobb)

I'm not going to defend Nastradamus like it was a good album, but 5 joints that I can rock with off the top of my head is not a "total dud".

Big Gilr is worse than Big Things.

I actually think the beat to Big Things is dope.

Nas just didn't feel comfortable on that style so it didn't work.

but "Big Things" is a prime example of why Columbia really fucked up with I AM...

they rushed out a song that didn't fit Nas, to sound "contemporary" and to cover up for bootlegging.

They should have just released it as it was intended. I think some fans would have forgiven the number of "Trackmasterisms" on the record if they didn't have to deal with rushed, uninspired "replacement" product.

It certainly shouldn't have been a double album, but it had easily 10-12 solid tracks and could have been a really good album after trimming the fat.

I still prefer it over most of his recent albums.

7/10

Good but could have been great
It's on the lower end of good tho ( should have been 1 disc)

Most of his albums outside ill and IWW hover around B and C +(I'll give S.M an A- great lp but not classic I'll say his 3rd best lp)

And he still is probably my fav mc all time

But album wise a lotta of 7-8's (lyrically much higher tho)

It's cool that he is so consistent
Only problem is that we expected consistent 9-10's

I'll take it all day tho
And I have bought every release
Will continue to do so
Just my expectations with esco are that it will be very solid

Absolutely true. Again, the perils of having The Best Album Ever as your debut.

But like you said, lyrically his ratings are higher. But his albums are just "very good" and consistent.

the unreleased SD cuts would've made this album longer, but way better:

serious
talk of ny
The N (i think this was a bonus cut on some cds)
serious

salaam remi said on his website that there's actually an original/director's cut version of SD that he's in his vaults.

i liked the live instrumentation mixed with the samples on this record, i think it gave a lot of the songs are warm, but hard feel. i don't know if it had to be two albums, but some stuff couldn't been cut (suicide bounce, me&you, american dream). it's one of my favorite later nas albums.
