"Gimme like your two or three favorite performances by a drummer."

Could be on a recorded song or a live show...or whatever.
In no particular order:
John Bonham on "In the Light" Geez, Bonzo! I know some casual Zep fans might say "Moby Dick", but to me this was it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXFUnnoSphY

I know this guy gets a lot of shade thrown his way, but if you can find a way to hate on Lars Ulrich's drumming on "One"...do your thing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM8bTdBs-cw&ob=av2n

Finally...the one and only time I saw Tool perform live, Danny Carey DESTROYED shit all night. So in the pocket, so in tune with Maynard. When they played this, though...Goodnight!

Jeff Porcaro on Boz Scaggs's "Gimme The Goods" (check the end)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uF4c4ezM-Z8

Billy Cobham on his own "Stratus": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aw2rM0w-pc

Harvey Mason on Herbie Hancock's "Shiftless Shuffle"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdZpkQKJiBg

was going to list up Steve Gadd's work on Steely Dan's "Aja" which is rightfully epic. Ditto for Bernard Purdie's ever-imitated "Home At Last" groove. I went with "Stratus" for the same reason I almost threw up another Jeff groove, "Your Gold Teeth II". Jazz chops swiftly transformed into some rock/type shit.

on a random note, I was ever impressed with George Duke's playing drums on his own "Mr. McFreeze", since I consider him a keyboardist first and foremost. he does have a bit of Stevie Wonder-ish "off-beatness" but that was actually cool. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LusqREGpQnQ)

In response to Reply # 0

He was crucial to the early development of metal drumming, and his work on "One" introduced double-kick to MTV and the mainstream, but even by 1989 he'd stopped developing as a drummer and was quickly becoming a punchline in the metal drumming community.

Compare what Dave Lombardo was doing with Slayer at the time ('90): http://youtu.be/QiyBq_llIbM

And Vinnie Paul with Pantera ('92): http://youtu.be/Bp9yHjLAUfU

And within a couple of years you get Tomas Haake with Meshuggah ('95): http://youtu.be/FTF5uLZYfp0

And Martin Lopez with Opeth ('98): http://youtu.be/U3ZHajw3-3s

And Chris Adler with Lamb of God ('00): http://youtu.be/yz8wkh-uFlk

Meanwhile, Lars hasn't adapted at all, and in fact may have gotten worse, which is one the reasons Jason Newsted quit the band, commenting after he joined Voivod that "Lars stopped working on his art."

So yeah, Lars' drumming is easy to hate on. "One" is probably the peak of his recorded output, and in context, it really isn't that impressive.

I don't know if it was a health thing (I assume not everyone's body can take that abuse) or just a laziness thing (Why should I work this hard if I'm rich?) but right after And Justice For All... (Loved "Blackened" and "Dyers Eve") he fell off.

...was supposedly recorded 1-2 bars at a time and I think you can hear it; there's something EXTREMELY clinical and cold about that record. I guess that's what they were aiming for but I could never really fully like it. But yes, that record has his best drumming IMO but that's not saying much, I'm another one who thinks he was lame, even during Metallica's prime...

Cream's "Toad" no doubt in my mind is where Led Zeppelin got it from. Ginger Baker did his thing amazingly on this song (Still prefer "Moby Dick" though) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpGi8M44cP8

Mitch Mitchell in my mind is highly underrated as a drummer, doesn't get enough props. "Manic Depression" is blows me away every time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYdq0ABH3so

And lastly I'll go with Robo's intro on Black Flag's "No More". Probably not the hardest thing ever but always thought it was done so cool, would be a great song to start any show.

I mean even though Hendrix subdued the rest of the band after the debut, Mitch still had some great work like "Bold As Love', "Spanish Castle Magic" "Long Hot Summer Night" and "Come On (Let The Good Times Roll". Both nothing compares to "Fire", "Third Stone From The Sun" and "I Don't Live Today"

I've never heard Prince do that one live himself (on the drums... does Prince play the drums at his shows?) though.

His bandmates, yeah.

I like it during the midtempo and slow sections and it's even groovy at times but it's WAY too robotic during the fast sections with barely a fill or accent anywhere. Add one of the worst snare-sounds ever and it gets a it annoying to listen to the fast sections when *that* sound is hitting you on the ehad constantly.

Anyway, the drumming as a whole on "Leprosy" works because it's a fairly raw and primitive old-school album but on the next album, "Spiritual healing", Billy Andrews drumming REALLY sounded passe. That album came out after Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer) had ripped everyones ass off in '89 so Death for once in their career sounded left behind, not just because of the drumming of course but it didn't help; I still find that album pretty weak. "Leprosy" fucking rips though...
