"El-P's I'll Sleep When You're Dead..."

I'm late.

Damn late.

I bought this the year it came out, and it went completely over my head. I wasn't ready for it.

There were a couple of songs I learned to like...but I haven't revisited it in years.

I recently dusted it off to prep for the Killer Mike album...this dude is an effing genius. Like a mad scientist or something.

Its strange that how, over repeated listens, songs that at first sounded like a mess now sound melodic as f*ck.

From The Overly Dramatic Truth through to the end of the album is just an amazing sequence.

I always liked TPC and Up All Night...I left TPC off that recent "best album openers" thread...it should be on there.

The lyrics on Dear Sirs??? Shiiiit

Sorry I'm late to this and rambling at this point...

Anyone spin this lately?

What else should I check out by him? I've been told to stay away from Fantastic Damage...

but it looks like he has other random singles from compilations and stuff...

What should I peep next??

I hated it in 07 outside of liek 2 songs.

then a couple more songs grew on me in 08

then a few more in 09

then last summer i played it from start to finish for the first time in a few years and there were 2-3 songs i didnt like but the rest was amazing.

i suspect it will continue to grow on me. it's really a brilliant record and a lot of it is probably still going over my head.

im excited for the new el p album that comes out in may.

As great as it is, Fantastic Damage still feels better to me. And the Overly Dramatic Truth is dope as fuck and sounds like T.O.J. part 2, but T.O.J. is just in a category of its own. Whoever told you to stay away from Fantastic Damage can go fuck themselves in all their holes and one entrance.

perfectly executed back-to-back tracks.

both about romance. first he's the good guy romantic. then he turns into a creepy asshole. and BOTH are convincing. THAT is some ballsy shit.

and the 9/11 conspiracy allusion at the end of "run the numbers" is kinda annoying (although far from the silliest thing i've ever heard in rap) other than that, it's a personal classic.

>What else should I check out by him? I've been told to stay
>away from Fantastic Damage...

it's not the most accessible album, but it's great. the rapping's not as good as on ISWYD. the beats are like sledgehammers. think about how "rebel without a pause" sounds compared to other rap of the same vintage. now imagine if the Everything Else did sound like "rebel without a pause" and that was the baseline the bomb squad worked against when trying to make your ears say "what the fuck?"

i don't think i explained that well:

late 80s rap : "rebel without a pause" :: "rebel without a pause" : fantastic damage

fantastic damage is nowhere near as insane as that, but it's in that direction is what i'm trying to say.

it has more of that ineffable "hip-hop" quality than ISWYD. there are more head-nodders.

i liked it immediately. it's definitely more melodic than fantastic damage, and not a disjointed and disorienting, which repulses a lot of people to his beats. they're both dope albums, but acquired listened for some people. a lot of it is very bomb squad based, though, especially emg, my favorite on the album.
