"Yes, Midnight Marauders >>> Aquemini & Things Fall Apart"

Yes, Midnight Marauders >>> Aquemini & Things Fall Apart

I had a debate at lunch the other day and me and some of the fellas started a hip hop debate...always fun of course.

So...yes...track for track I feel that MM is better than the above LP's. I believe these are the best overall LP's for each group but this is just how I view them. All dope.

Just a random thought as I thought back on our debate

or even think Marauders was a particularly influential album on the genre despite it being a great/classic/etc.

Tribe surely influenced Kast as a group overall but I'd say Low End Theory had a bigger impact & more repercussions on the musical landscape, so the whole 'wouldn't exist without it' stuff seems overstated.

Yep, Low End had a bigger overall Hip Hop on the culture. Thats not even a debate. Any hip hop head know this from the production to the sampling..

IMO the 20 Hip Hop LP's ever off the dome...no real order...

Tribe "Midnight Marauders"
Nas "Illmatic"
Common "Like Water for Chocolate"
Pete Rock and C.L "The Main Ingredient"
Reflection Eternal "Train of Thought"
Eric B and Rakim "Follow the Leader"
Jay Z "Reasonable Doubt"
Madvillain "Madvillainy"
Redman "Whut? The Album"
Ghostface "Supreme Clientele"
EPMD "Strictly Business"
Outkast "Aquemini"
Edan "Beauty and The Beat"
BDP "Criminal Minded"
Tribe "Low End Theory"
Jeru the Damaja "The Sun Rises in the East"
NWA "Straight Outta Compton"
Raekwon "OBFCL"
Mobb Deep "The Infamous"
Gangstarr "Moment of Truth"

...this ain't easy...

Illmatic
ATLiens
The Main Ingredient
Midnight Marauders
Liquid Swords

those 5 are just classics among classics in my life and opinion.

I wasn't up on Low End Theory or It Takes A Nation or Paid in Full or Amerikkka's Most when I was yougner so I'm not tied to those type of classics as much as I am from '93 and beyond.

but yea, TMI is the best produced album to me. front to back, those beats are incredibly crafted.

i don't think it's better than Aquemini. yes end to end, MM is stronger, but overall: theme, content, sound, artistry... there are few things in Aquemini's stratosphere. of course MM doesn't have a weak moment like Mamacita (which i like by the way), but god damn that album is phenomenal... strange thing is, you'll catch me saying the same shit about Midnight Marauders on any other day. simply put, two of the best albums of the last 25 years. Aquemini gets a slight edge from me though

I do think it has its flaws.

(nitpicking begins)

I was never too fond of Synthesizer when it dropped even though Dre kills his verse and I've grown to like it more now.

Mamcita is more problematic to me than just being their worst song up until that point in their career.

To me, the album kind of takes a nose dive at that point.

I LOVE SpottieOttie and Liberation but those songs at 12 and 15 are just too close for the flow of the album especially when they follow Mamacita and sandwich Y'all Scared.

I do like Y'all Scared and Chonkyfire, but as I listen to the album now, Mamacita, Y'all Scared, and Chockyfire (along with Synthesizer) are the lesser tracks on the album.

And when you have the tail end of the album overloaded with those joints and 2 LOOOONG, left of center songs (for a Hip-Hop album) it makes it easy to, at times, tune out after Storytellin' Pt 2.

Those were my thoughts after listening to the album recently.

Again, this is nitpicking and ATLiens and Aquemini are two of my absolute favorite albums of all-time.

SAY YOU SCARED!

But, seriously, Aquemini is my pick between these three albums.

And you're out of you're mind if you don't honestly consider 'Ya'll Scared' as one of the highlights of the album.

Not YOU specifically. Just, anybody.

I prefer both Mainstream (my favorite Kast song) and Thought Process better and this was the same collabo.

I just like the front end of the album that much.

Return of the G
Rosa Parks
Skwe It on the Barb-B
Aquemini
Slump
West Savannah
Art of Storytellin' 1 & 2

then SpottieOttie and Liberation are all songs I like better than Y'all Scared.

Those drums are serious though!

Saying 'Mainstream' and 'Thought Process' (two of the best songs ever) is better than simply an album highlight is pretty obvious.

I seem to remember a topic on this forum a while back where somebody said "Name your favorite OutKast song" and between all the replies, every song from the first four albums was mentioned.

So, yeah.

"Consistent" doesn't even begin to accurately describe them.

I see what you're saying though RE: Aquemini.

Every verse on the song is dope. I don't get what people don't like about it. The hook?

And, in comparison, the beat is pretty mundane.

Witchdoctor's verse still makes me laugh to this day, though. "Stouffer's Lasagna — that's how much I want 'cha." Whoa there, high roller!

TFA is a monster album but MM is a fucking behemoth
Kast's weakness, though its never pointed out, is sequencing
they tend to throw shit on albums and put the sounds and experimentation ahead of sequencing, and it shows on Aquemini moreso than probably any other album they have
and it's mostly due to how fucking good it is
the weak moments in sequencing highlight flaws you'd normally overlook

up through the first half its pretty flawless but it takes a nosedive around the 2/3 mark of the album

I'll take MM over Aquemini easily. It just flows better. This is a 1993 LP compared to a 1998 one but I like production on MM. You cant lose either way though.
