"Does anyone else think that KRS-One's career got wasted over bad beats?"

i'm listening to Edutainment. KRS is rapping his ass off, but the production is kinda ho-hum. i know some of this is the product of listening to something made in 1990 thru 2012 ears, but from listening to other KRS-ONE albums, I end up liking 1 or two beats and pushing through 10-12 other tracks where the beats just don't match up to KRS-ONE's rapping.

he may be one of the best ever MC's, but i think even Nas has had better production over his career.

and the first album you reference in your post is "Edutainment". I'll be back when I wrap my head around all this.

granted i wasn't into hip-hop really when Edutainment and the other BDP stuff came out. (i was more into hip-hop like in '93) and i know hip-hop production from that time was more hit or miss and had less 'pop' songwriting qualities or sheen, but i can appreciate Kris' ability, and maybe i used waste incorrectly. i just think he is legitimately one of the top 5 MC's of all time in his skill and ability to convey stories and conviction and concepts on the mic, but when i listen to the beats, they always fall short with the exception of the random song or his work with Premier.

why he never reached LL or Jay-Z's level of stardom...its because of his content, which wasn't exactly radio friendly subject matter, more than anything esle that you could point to

i'm not thinking KRS would ever be a pop star with the lyrical content he had in his music and i know this is a new generation and there are qualities in MC's the come and go out of fashion so I understand why he isn't as regarded as Jay or Biggie nowadays.

but like Mama Said Knock You Out came out in the same year, and i don't think the beats from I assume Kenny Parker are anywhere close to the quality of Marley Marl from the same time period.

if KRS-ONE came out today, he'd get the same treatment from the press about his beat quality. Great MC, not as great at making compelling music.

i think i've heard that too. (maybe from people in The Lesson)

But even in the Kenny Parker, BDP days I wouldn't call the production of the music the selling point of KRS-ONE. it was always Kris wildin' out for 3 and half minutes over a beat.

he really deserved a bigger budget for music (if he was indeed jerking people.) and an executive producer to guide his sound. if he did an album with Premier...

* head explodes at the mere thought *

* ducks tomatoes *

but i wasn't talking about his singles or the songs he's known for. those songs are classic. that's without question.

i guess i was trying to get across that his ratio of 'hot song' (taken from Jay-Z) to 'blah' is strangely low given how talented as an MC Kris is.

i think i phrased this post incorrectly by going after Kris when I really needed to attack his producers.

i meant to criticize KRS-ONE the musician, not so much KRS-ONE the lyricist.

outside of "Love's Gonna Getcha" (which was my first favorite hip-hop song) i didn't really feel anything on there. i tend to be more into 'pop' or traditional song structure, but i didn't get pulled into anything outside of the track i mentioned.

but why compare it to the sounds of the present??? You made it sound like the 1990 era of production was inferior to 2012. If you weren't doing that then sorry for the accusation.

and better crafted than alot of stuff out now, but i may be arrogant for thinking this way, but i've always thought that music ought to have standards. (man, i do kinda sound like a douche. * sigh *)

i tend to like music that sounds like there was more thought or craftsmanship behind it and i think music of the early 90's sounded like it did, at least more so than music now, but i kinda fall in love with a 'sound' or a style and just want that style *all* the time.

I think you just wasn't feeling the sound, but KRS-One's career wasn't even at it's highest yet until he dropped the BDP name and just started using his own name, that's when he really was picking some dope beats to rhyme to.

Or on "KRS ONE"

and the BDP output rarely suffered from bland production.
Perhaps it just isn't for you,
but objectively speaking
there's not much that messes with BDP/KRS' production
'til "I GOT NEXT"
