I have seen some real dumb shit on these boards, and I am confident in saying that most of the back and forth dumb shit on here is because people simply have different view points on the terms in the post title.
Now, I happen to think if you don't understand these terms then you aren't that intelligent, but we won't waste time on that.
I am just curious to your responses to these few questions;
MCs Who is the BEST MC of all-time? Who is your FAVORITE MC of all-time? Who is the GREATEST MC of all-time?
ALBUMS (Hip-Hop) What is the BEST Album of all-time? What if your FAVORITE Album of all-time? What is the GREATEST Album of all-time?

Greatest is influenced by factors other than technical skill.
Jay-Z I would say is a safe bet for greatest when you add in his accomplishments...but by no means is Jay a clear cut better MC than someone like Rakim or Nas or to be real, even someone like Black Thought.
But none of those 3 have been able to generate the amount of success that Jay has.
Pac is a great MC and is very much a legend (that post somewhat inspired this one), but is he a better MC than, let's say Monch?

for a post that's kind of attempting to solidify definitions for future threads, i would've expected more of a breakdown in the OP.. like, your example of each, instead of setting it up to "catch" ppl who got it "wrong".. haha sorry, i just try to call out posts w/ non-inclusive motives..
but i feel you to an extent, it's annoying when you want to know ppl's opinions and they don't know how to answer the question correctly (not that their opinions are wrong, they just didn't fully understand the question)..

To me, When Cube had that Amerkka's Most/Kill At Will/Death Certificate run, he was the best rapper on the planet. That said, Rakim will always be the greatest rapper of all time.

meaning, just because an MC is great, doesn't make him the best. Example, Special Ed was a *great*, but there a ton of better MC's, and not too many people would call him one of the greatest. He ranks VERY high on my list, but I couldn't argue that he's the greatest. There's a ton of "greats" but not too many qualify for "Best". I'm thinking cats like Grandaddy IU, BLU, Lord Finesse, Common, et al...
Some people had talent AND influence. Those are the ones I rank among the "Best". Cats like KRS-ONE, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, etc...

People are answering who the best "technical" emcee is, and already you see a divergence of people pointing to Nas (widely considered best POETIC lyricist (ie metaphor, imagery)) while others point to Eminem (sickest flows, ability to rhyme topically with intricacy). It is subjective whether you prefer the best exponent of metaphor or intricacy, which aspect of an emcee you prefer in other words.
The reason best is meaningless is nobody can ever meaningfully and objectively define what the GOAL of rapping is. It's not like sports where you can try to evaluate a body of work in terms of its ability to win games or titles, the CLEARCUT objective of the game (and even in sports you still have controversy in how to weigh contributions towards this end)...in art it's just not possible to do this.
