"Babyface>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bruce Springsteen"

Babyface is truly Black on Both sides and can't get no Hall of fame love despite having Stats and Jewlery 1)

babyface got as many Hits as Wilt Chamberlin hit Bed Sprangs back in the day 2)

wrote and Produced for everybody and there granny and grandpa. 3)

had his own Label, dominated music, film and tv and is more Patriotic and American than Bruce Tacky TUrkey Springsteen. Face got better albums, better songs and held things down for 2 decades. 4)

Babyface wrote the songs that the whole world sang and sung.

if Babyface was White they would have street corners named after him. WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he has done it all and gets slept on.

"MJ had better albums than r. kelly period.

songs MJ wrote for other artists > songs that r. smelly wrote for other artists.

yeah, r. smelly wrote for MJ but i believe "you are not alone" ain't touching "we are the world" in terms of impact.

also r. smelly can't dance like no michael jackson.

r. smelly ain't had a hit in how long? thriller 25 sold more than love letters.

mike jackson got a longer career than r. smelly but turkeys donn't wanna hear it.

r. smelly ain't got no money cut like "billie jean."

^^ now that would be wrong, right?
so why can't you just let folks that like springstein be excited about his new album
without you having to make a post trashing him for no reason.

damn.

here's an idea...
just talk about how much you like babyface.

b/c if i spent all day saying that every artist
that didn't measure up to michael jackson,
i'd be clowning everybody.

but how much sense would that make, really.

From The Deele to his work as co-founder of LAFace Records, Babyface is one of the greatest in the music industry.

Excerpt from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babyface_(musician)

"In 1989, Edmonds co-founded LaFace Records with Reid. Three of the label's early artists TLC, Usher, and Toni Braxton were successful, the former becoming one of the best selling female groups in music history. Braxton's eponymous 1993 debut album went on to sell over eight million copies, and earned her the 1994 Grammy Award Best New Artist. TLC's first two albums on LaFace—1992's Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip and 1994's CrazySexyCool—combined to sell more than 15 million copies in the U.S. CrazySexyCool won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best R&B album. Babyface helped form the popular late-90s R&B group Az Yet.

Edmonds works with many successful performers in contemporary music. “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” produced for Whitney Houston, was his first #1 Top 40 hit in the US. He also wrote and produced Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" and "I'll Make Love to You," both of which established records for the longest stay at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He co-wrote, co-produced, and provided backing vocals on Madonna's 1994 Bedtime Stories, which featured the 7-week #1 hit "Take a Bow," and shared billing with Eric Clapton on the chart-topping Grammy winner "Change the World" from the Phenomenon soundtrack. He also wrote and produced the #1 hit "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" for Whitney Houston as well as the rest of the critically acclaimed 10 million selling Waiting to Exhale soundtrack in 1995, which spawned additional hits for Whitney Houston, Brandy and Mary J. Blige.

Additionally, Edmonds has produced and written music for many artists including Carole King, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Al Green, Beyoncé, Diana Ross, Sheena Easton, Toni Braxton, Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton, Paula Abdul, Pebbles, Tevin Campbell, Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Tamia, Shola Ama, 3T, Sisqó, Dru Hill, Fall Out Boy, Céline Dion, Katharine McPhee, Mariah Carey, Vanessa L. Williams, Chanté Moore, En Vogue, Eric Clapton, Kenny G, Kristinia DeBarge, Lil Wayne, Japanese singer Ken Hirai, P!nk, Marc Nelson, TLC, and Phil Collins among others.

He received three consecutive Grammy Awards for Producer of the Year in 1995–1997."

He's got a soft glow on his sound. Everything smooth on a babyface. I've loved his music all my life. Grace and finesse.

But Bruce Springsteen is a better rocknroll singer than so many overated rock singers. Bruce sings with soul.

as if Tender lover and for the cool in you don't mean things to fans of his work? as is writing songs about love and relationships don't mean something?

and in the Wheel house of Springsteen his best work that moved me the most was his "tunnel of Love" album which was very honest.

nothing hits the heart and soul strongly as love, however dissing a Black Man for writing about it is fashionable in here I see??

Love and relationships is what most pop music is written about because it's universal, easily relatable, and safe. Which isn't to say it's not something worth writing a million songs about. It's the main part of the human condition next to birth and death. But if you're going to stay in that lane, then you're going to end up looking less significant as an artist, especially to rock critics and the rock hall of fame (which seems to be the kind of recognition you're asking for with this ridiculous comparison).

It's especially funny when you invoke Babyface's "patriotism." Bruce is not a fundamentally "patriotic" (which I take to mean jingoistic, flag-waving) artist at all. "Born in the USA" was badly misunderstood by politicians, and Bruce is no Toby Keith by any stretch of the imagination. He is, however, still quintessentially American.

Also funny you talk about street corners being named after him... you do know there's a Babyface highway in Indianapolis (where I live), right? The guy is not *totally* ignored, especially not here.

always held to different standards period.

Babyface has written important songs which have crossed into more genres than Bruce Springsteen and that is a fact.

anytime an R&B artist hits on R&B,Pop, Adult cotempary and I know Face has had stuff on the hip hop charts and country charts that speaks volumes.

Bruce Springsteen aside from the pop charts might chart field and stream magazines top ten??

Face has done more and i already know and mentioned about your state acknowledging the 2nd best Artist to come from there.

Every time I have ever suggested you were wrong about one of your "black guy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> white guy" threads, you implied or flat-out said it was because I was racist. I've saved private messages from you calling me racist because I dared to think Paul McCartney was better than Jermaine Jackson or something. You go out of your way to shut down any contradictory opinions from white people.

The worst part is, I'm the kind of white person you probably should want to talk music with. At least half the music I listen to is by black artists. I never try to act like I'm down in some way that I know I'm not. I agree with you that the industry has a problem with racism (especially historically) though I don't agree that it goes as deep or is as conspiratorial as you say it is. But basically we're on the same page, we have similar opinions in general terms, we listen to a lot of the same music and grew up in the same era. Yet because I'm a white guy and I don't think Babyface is better than Springsteen (who I'm not even a huge fan of BTW), you just implied, for probably the tenth time, that I'm racist.

ain't no such thing as a race card, its called the cards that were dealt.

Black folks don't play no cards because that is how the deck is played on us from the word jump.

i would never say Jermaine Jackson is better than paul Mccartney as a Artist, etc.. that ain't a good analogy.

both are multi instrumentalist and i respect they can each sing and play bass at the same time, however that is all they have in common.

Mccartney is a Musical Genius while Jermaine is a Good talent, who should and could have been far more if he was hungry and driven for it.

you never answered or remarked on the part of Babyface's diversity as a Artist and producer.

musically he has done more than Springsteen.

and Springsteen is a Pop Star lets not get it twisted. has had Hits and Hit albums.

it ain't like i put babyface up against Tiny tim.

now in this segment - I'm gonna disagree. I love the Boss man and his work is not really comparable to Babyface.

Babyface's recording techniques are far inferior to the Boss - live music only - technque versus Face's - cut and paste - technique.

Babyface however has written some great songs and has a huge history in music. Why he's not in the HOF is ridiculous.

I would maintain cause his music is just palatable formulaic R&B, nothing groundbreaking. It's like you heard one Babyface song you heard them all.

it was rumored by LA Raid that Face once wrote I think 9 songs in 24 hours. Fully produced and compeleted.

Now here is the major difference.

Face has a team of producers underneath him that submit music, he fine tunes it and stamps it. yes a Puffy and a hit squad.

The Boss has never been that type of player. He's a songwriter for real, not a formulaic one, but a socially conscious poet of sorts.
Huge difference.

Face busted his chops with Manchild back in 78 and his early deele days.

Face can play and does far more genres than Springsteen.

Springsteen got about 80 songs that sound the same. over playing Little Steve is so cliched.

Max Winburg the drummer is the only member of the E Street band aside from the late Clarence Carter that I paid attention to there playing.

Springsteen is sleepy time and corny.

if Springsteen was a Brother his unsung would be on mute from dealing with that constipated singing he does.

Michael Jackson clowned that turkey and I rolled.

only a massive musical experience to fAce's Snoozefest 5000.

Face is cool but his stronghold is purely in the studio.

He's okay, but he stays well within the same register.

Springsteen has covered many styles of music - his vocal capability withstanding.

No way in hell Face is seeing Springsteen on guitar and I'm not even a Boss fan like that.

Face's track record reads like exactly what he is, an R&B producer.

Mind you, he's made some gems, but he's also built a career of constantly making the same sounding music over and over again.

Bruce Springsteen is a legend and an icon.

His live performances are unmatched.

His 'everyman' attitude should be rewareded, not ridiculed.

He's an activist, he puts his money where his mouth is.

Hell Born in the USA was a protest record.

When has Babyface ever done anything political?

Babyface is basically Raphael Saadiq minus the range, flair, and relevance of Raphael (that 60's bullshit withstanding).

No sir, to even begin to compare is like saying

Michael Knight is a better driver than Mario Andretti.

nothing more political than that My friend.

Face's music can be country, pop, gospel and Hip hop aspects. R&B is a Musical Gumbo of everything period so he ain't ever gotta prove nothing there.

Face is the everyman of R&B when you think about it.

hard working ran his own label, did films, tv,etc..

songwriter, producer and artist in his own right and dominated.

Face wrote and produced for music ROyality.

he has nothing to prove. he did it all really.

Springstank is a basic Pop act and nothing more.great live act, however most of his songs sound the same and he is aight at best.

He's not an exceptional guitarist or keys player by any flip of the coin. He's not groundbreaking, innovative in any capacity.

He has a soft, solid lane of R&B.
I won't mention smooth jazz cause it will deter your argument fam.
lol.

Still to compare him to Bruce is a losing battle, Bruce is incredible and has been constantly recording, touring, and speaking out against the ills of society since the mid 70's. What other artist on earth has constantly stayed in your face since the mid 70's?

You are sorely underselling the genius of the Boss. I lied, I am a fan like that cause the more and more I think about it - I realize how relevant he's been.

Face has done TV, films (normally shit I don't like or watch) but yeah I'll give you that. He's produced royalty - but let's be real, in R&B if you produce hits - the horses will come running. It's not like they base that level of work off of how groundbreaking you are. R&B stays playing that silly numbers game.

You can take damn near any Babyface record - and I could line em up and show you how he stays in the same key, uses the same chord changes, etc. That's not innovation.
That's just capitalizing and maximizing off your previous success.
That's why he stayed gliding but eventually it came down.
His first and second album - dopeness.

The rest, gimmicks based off the first two.
Maybe not that bad, but c'mon man.

any turkey can do what Springstank does, that ain't hard. the touring aspect yes i'll give him that props on, but as a artist he is corny and bland.

nothing much there and face has been able to stand through changes in R&B music which is more difficult to stay having hits than the credit is due.

Face been around since the 70's as well and he didn't get no newsweek putting him on the cover before he blew up.

Face paid his dues and flipped the switch and had a run like so few others.

Yes Face has been around for a while - I respect the man. I'm comfortable with his comfort. I don't wanna sound like a hater, but the truth is.. he has a formula. The same register over and over and over again. That's just boring dude.

Anytime the Soul Food soundtrack is a familiar in sound as say After7, that's not really saying much.

Do you think cats will rememeber After7 or Born to Run?
Hell let's take a weaker record like Dancing In the Dark, will folks remember that or Face's later stuff?

Face has changed careers working with Bobby on his breakthrough album, working with Whitney - I mean everyone. No doubt the man WAS able to write a hit, but it was also during an era of R&B where production was bland and horrible and he took the high road. Not doubting that, however to just randomly compare him to someone who

is not in R&B
has no affiliation to his sound
that has no similar qualities at all seems... well.. random.

That's like me saying "Kiss can't funk like the Ohio Players". Well yeah. Cause they weren't supposed to.

The flip of this post of "Sprinsteen aint got no soul like Face" would be "Face cannot rock like Sringsteen". See my point?

Also, again, what causes this argument to crash and burn is you shitting on the Bosses live performances - clearly the bread and butter of his output. The Boss live is nothing short of a mega musical experience.

I mean his everyman bar rock sound isn't always for me I'll admit - but if you said "hey man, you can chose tickets to see The Boss or Face" by the time you said The Boss I would have already been in the venue fam.

just on the name alone Face wins. Bro man is still known as babyface at 50 plus and still cool and he is doing the running man when he does the Bobby Brown medley.

Springstank can't cabbage patch or do the running man. Face can hit those notes as well.

Face takes time out his show to do the side medley of hits he wrote for Bobby Brown, Boyyz 11 Men, Whitney Houston,

and we ain't even talking about his own hits.

Face easily.

folks will be dressed and cleaned at a Face concert and it will be smooth like a Hearsey Bar with almonds. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

what the fuck is Springsteen supposed to do the running man to?!

he's fun to read but no point responding to, it's been well established that if you aren't R&B and you don't have #1s he doesn't care about you. but the R&B still stands above the hits; I'm sure he's preparing a post about how much better Tank is than Papa Roach, somewhere. It'll be entertaining but it won't be valuable.

C'mon man...
if so what are they? I mean not dogging the man...

but several things stand out..

I had trouble sleeping - so the doctor recommended the most powerful thing around - a babyface concert.

Now I know face has written alot of songs for alot of folks..

alot of those songs sound so familiar I really have no idea what's what? I did like his first two albums but that was also an introduction to his sound. Plus the Don't be Cruel stuff.. but still man.

You have to be kidding me if you think Face can give a better show than The Boss man. That's just... nuts..

what's next Full Force puts on a better show than Iggy Pop?

Also nuts.

Your thoughts on the super bowl 'working on a dream'?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3wqwYqlIUY

A little country, a little gospel and a little rocknroll

but I've been watching it lately. Bruce first song at the superbowl was incredible. 'Put down the guacomole dip'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R06FMoT-hkk

It's got a place in your heart Max. Don't lie.

dude ate like He ate Viagra tablets like how I eat Now and Laters. turkey was all over the top. Little Steven over acting and over playing.

there show was corny IMO.

Babyface could do all of that in his sleep.

Springsteen is a cool dude by the way as a person, however Musically he is just average.

like Michael Jackson once so said about Springsteen he lacks Charisma and Personality like that. Hard worker, however its predictable.

i didn't care for his super bowl performance at all, however it was better than the WHo's and Black Eyed peas. not saying much though.

Babyface got fans across all lines and places period.

Springsteen ain't never have nobody in the hood pop locking or macking with his songs on to a fine looking Chick.

take a tired one trick pony like SpringStank up against Babyface's track record.

R.kelly would run Springstank out of Jersey and claim that state as well, however Sister Whitney Houston owns Jersey.

SpringStank is overrated and boring. he can play live and has energy, but still an Overrated Hack.

BOring beyond Boring.

if SpringStank was Black he wouldn't have had half the music career that Eddie Murphy had.

FYI Babyface tours all over the world and his songs are known world wide. the songs he does and of course for others.

go to a Face show and he has segements live of the tracks broken down in medleys that he composed for Bobby Brown, Whtiney Houston, tevin Campbell.

this ain't including hit songs for Boyz 11Men or others. not including the Deele or his own Solo career.

Face got Hits like How Wilt Chamberlin Hit Bed Sprangs.

Springstank charging what his corny Behind can't bring to a stage.

FYI Springstank's show doesn't represent enough diversity so therefore those prices and numbers don't fully count.

and it wasn't like he was ever a DOminant Musical Figure like babyface either.

lets not get it twisted.

if the record companys told either dude to make a hit on the other, then Babyface would be the one hooking Springstank up with quickness believe that.

Face had a song on Beyonce's last album, he co wrote Charlie Wilson's "there goes my baby" which was a big hit.

Face still puts out albums and tours.

Springstank is basically Larry the cable guy. everybody knows the routine.

he almost lost his deal by the third album cause he didn't live up to the hype of the Dylan comparison.

When he wrote Born to Run he was under the gun and just had a "I Don't five a " attitude.

That's a classic album fam.

Dude...I'm from the hood...And even I know that Springsteen was about to lose his deal in the 70s because he wasn't selling albums and not living up to the hype...

That's a big part of dude's story....

Hell, he was the only mainstream rock cat that was preaching about police brutality and the death of Diallo....And he was getting booed at gigs by his largely white fan base who would just as easily walk the other way when they saw a black man walking their way...

I got no beef with Springsteen...He's the wrong dude to mess with....Dude has been a stand up cat...And he's still going strong...

I'll say it again....Stand up cat...Forget all the hype and press...

Most of our R&B folks were awfully silent when that Diallo shooting went down...All you heard was MC's speaking up. And they were usually underground...

So when Springsteen did that 'American Skin-41 Shots' song, released it and sang it on tour as he was getting booed, that was all I needed to see...

You can keep this agenda, Maxx...Springsteen proved enough to me.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

What was Face's social statement? I mean, Springsteen has made a career out of putting his nuts on the table...That's what he does...His fans were walking out of the arena when he was doing that Diallo song...And he knew he would get blow back...Gave back money to Diallo's family to...And police organizations were HEATED...And you have to understand...they make up some of his core fans...Yet Springsteen didn't care...

Again, I'm all about showing and proving...And not "ifs"...

how come how long was about domestic violence not to mention he has done countless charity acts and supported a whole lot of things known and unknown.

i give Springstank props for doing that back in the day and some other things however he ain't the only act its just that the media makes it a point of highlighting it more and you already know why.

Black Acts do a ton of things and the media don't care however let you be at a liquor store or something going down and thats all they want to report.

you know better than most at the double standard, homie you work for the media and the Man.

Springstank has done some things, still don't take away he is a overrated artist and a snoozefest times 2. sings like he is constipated and I agreed with what Michael Jackson said about him as a artist and that was the truth.

exactly. Shitting on Bruce is so lame and out of pocket. The man is a poet and a great songwriter.

Then to compare him to an R&B songwriter who merely writes the same song over and over and over again.

Plus has a team of producers under him writing the same shit over and over again.

Daps - I'm w you on this.

Sprignstank is respected as a stage act and he is aight, but he ain't got No SOul and is boring.

he gets clowned and Michael Jackson had the best lines on him and that is probably why corny over the top Little Steven is a known MJ hater.

Springstank is for the soulless.

if SprigStank was Black he would be working at "Al's Hog Guts and Ripple" with Eagle Eye Cherry. and Ya Know this.

When did Bruce ever say he was a soulman?

Through those glasses most major musicians now suddently don't count

Beethoven
Bach
Springsteen
Dylan (who they originally tried to push Bruce as the new Bob)
Sting

I mean... say what you will if the music isn't for you then so be it. However if you are judging whether or not I have soul or am a real black person based on whether or not I fuck with Babyface then you are buggin. I liked the Deel and Face's first two solo albums.

Forgive me for having at least some damn insight. lol.

You still my favorite poster - you have damn near singlehandedly revived these boards - massive respect fam.

Springstank listen to a whole lot of Doo Wop and early to mid 60's R&B when you hear "Cover Me" that is where he is trying to go, however the exlax won't let his constipation get on out properly.

Face has done everything Springstank has done and other things times 2.

Springstank is more Myth than as good as advertise.

Babyface pulled a Shaq, rammyKobe and Jordan and Pippen and 3 Peated the G Jewlery in a row as Producer of the year.

Face 3 Peated in Springstank's neck of the woods on the charts.

Face had hits in R&B,Pop Adult comtempary and got some country love as well.

Sprinstank is a Pop artist BTW.

I mean I respect your opinion. My mother would say the same thing - but then I would think, well my mom also doesn't come from the audience that Bruce speaks to. My mom has a particular sound she likes and that's totally fair.

However to discount the millions upon millions of people who love the Boss just cause you may like Face is short sighted.

First, the comparison is random and unfair. It's like when someone tried to compare Whitney covers to Dangelo covers - WHY?

lol.

Mind you personal taste is what this convo is about.

for 3 decades plus and that is a valid argument I'm making.

it ain't like i put Scatman Scrouthers up against Bruce Springsteen, though Scatman had some talent.

i mean its a fair debate because they are both Pop Artists who have dominated the pop world at different points and time.

its harder to be a Hit making machine than an Artist who has a big career believe that.

That's not the argument cause it would be hard to really have an argument like that from any angle. Sales.. c'mon. New Kids on the Block sell. Your argument was that Springsteen wasn't seeing him and that the Boss couldn't give a better show?

later. A guy who just released yet another phenomenal, socially relevant, and current albu, last week which will be #1 on the charts next week

vs

a guy who writes babymaking music and pop hits that other people sing while he turns knobs from a chair in the studio.

I love me some face, but cmon Max. You're being silly

you in here talking like he wrote something deeper than Michael Jackson did or Lionel Richie? Rick James had deeper songs, R.kelly got deeper songs, i can name many black acts including Gill scott heron amongest others that did what Springstank gets a pass for doing

he ain't counted for no 40 years straight either he ain't no Michael Jackson so don't get it twisted.

a Marginal overrated act who is a strong live Performer and that is all i gotta say about the cat.

if Writing is so silly well tell Stevie Wonder that?

tell Burt Bachrach that?

tell Thom Bell that?

tell Holland,dozier and Holland that?

tell Lionel B RIchie that?

those are some of the cats that Babyface got his inspiration from

and Love is the most serious topic fo Real Player.

you just made because Springstank got the kind of slow jams that work at a Sonic Burger joint, but you can't remember them

i'd take Kenny Loggins over Springstank any time or day and he is more soulful and a better all around artist to boot imo

In response to Reply # 89

what kinda turkey is judging artists based on there personal lives anyway? you spent alot of time in tabloid land to make your arguments and that much is true.

you speak on Michael Jackson, Rick james, R.kelly based on things that have nothing to do with there god given creativity and I call you out on that one Partna.

and my IQ is like Sunshine while your soul is like the rain that hits the ground.

your record collection is like Pino from "do the right thing" you like it from far away and yet your hateful bias rears its ugly head to prove your Bruce Love.

115. "Both those artists can suck it..."
In response to Reply # 0

Springsteen is bore-rock personified. An emphasize on lyrics/emotional resonance, a "big" sound and other nonsense that has nothing to do with great rock IMO...

As for Babyface, he has a shitload of hits under his belt but does a single one of them have a cool arrangement, bassline, drumpattern, instrumentation etc.-its *just* melody and changes and I don't dig that. Maybe if he was young in another era (like say Burt Bacharach) when people cared about those things, he could have been great but the pop-music of the late 80's-90's was very bad in terms of rhythm and harmony arrangements so I just hear a bunch of slickly produced pop-songs from him. If you have a good example of a Babyface-song that has something going for it beyond melody/chords, I might change my opinion but everything he has done to me sounds like bland craftmanship...

In response to Reply # 115

You show an understanding of what makes Babyface so great. It certainly IS the changes and melodies. So you're challenge is kinda like asking someone to name a James Brown song that has a memorable melody.

There is alot of great instrumentation on his songs....like the guitar on 'When Can I see you again'. But even there, it's mostly the changes that make it great...and obviously, for music that focuses on composition like that....instrumental prowess usually just gets in the way. His artistry is best served by subtle yet capable instrumentation.

In response to Reply # 119

I grew up on Slayer for chrissakes! Even when I got into stuff like Stevie Wonder and Beach Boys which had great melodies, the *sound* still had to be there and those artists had it. Melody and changes is just a spice for me; something that can push artist A above artist B *if* there is more going on. And instrumental prowess is not that important either-I think that sloppy amateurs have made a lot of great music. Ideas have very little to do with virtuosity IMO...

In response to Reply # 120

But you made a two-pronged critique. I was addressing the first part about providing an example with 'a good bassline, drum pattern, instrumentation'.

The other prong you identified is the 'sound' or sonics of his songs.

I'd love to hear a babyface record produced with an aim for a different sound than he's accustomed to. Like get Raphael Saddiq or Rick Rubin or someone like that to make an organic sounding record with Babyface changes and melodies. Babyface songs with a 'de-glossed' production.
