"Top Dawg Ent on Aftermath"

http://pitchfork.com/news/45696-kendrick-lamar-and-schoolboy-q-sign-to-interscope/

I figured that's where Kendrick was ending up, btu it's good to see the whole crew get picked up. Hopefully Dre and Jimmy let them release their music as often as they want.

In response to Reply # 8

cause Eminem didn't change his sound once he signed to them?
cause X didn't change his sound once he signed with them?
cause Ra, Raekwon, Last Emp, Joell Ortiz, and Bishop Lamont didn't sit on the shelves 'cause Dre didn't hear that one hit from them?

I'm worried as shit that not only will their sound change, but that the music will slow down drastically; fuck it, got Overly Dedicated, two volumes of Long Term, Setbacks, Section.80, Long Term Mentality and Habits & Contradictions

I honestly think Jay Rock is the only one who will really benefit from this signing on a wider audience-music quality level. His Top Dawg sound was closest to what Interscope/Dre produce

exactly...& i think i read that Interscope was doing distribution for all their releases which is weird to me since Jay Rock's signed with Strange Music who has distro with Fontana.

I agree with you though man, based on pretty much every artist who signs to a major label & ESPECIALLY Aftermath, their music is most likely going to change and/or going to get held back for long periods of time.

what folks think it is.

Eminem changed his sound for the better. X's sound changed and although his lyrics/content weren't as good as before, production was dope. Busta did great with that sound. 50 came with somewhat of his own style, but it went hard as hell. Game definitely made it big with that sound.

The CEO Tweeted, and this is a joint venture where they are still free to do what they want. I'm really not sure if it's just a few projects they're doing with Aftermath, or if they are just gonna let them do their thing, stamp it, approve it, and then push it. But yeah...I don't think they are gonna deal with the same things as those other artists before.

Well, since Top Dawg Entertainment is involved, I remain optimistic about this venture.

I am wondering if we are going to start hearing some Black Hippy shit on Clear Channel radio stations in the near future.

because obviously Curren$y hasn't really slowed down at all, or at least not more than could be reasonably expected after his 2008/2009 flurries

From the CEO of TDE. This is some late 90's rap CEO boss talk, label before artist. No one is that open about it anymore...

https://twitter.com/#!/dangerookipawaa/status/177904247717888001

@dangerookipawaa
TDE signed a joint venture with Aftermath and Interscope. Not Kendrick Jay Rock AB-Soul and Schoolboy Q. They are signed to TDE.

https://twitter.com/#!/dangerookipawaa/status/177905350878560256

@dangerookipawaa
They go where I take them. I don't like how Fader titled the story. The story was about Top Dawg Entertainment.

I'm sure there's many more, each of these labels have their own distinct sound and all of them are backed by majors.

not the norm. I wasn't very surprised by Rolling Papers, it was mostly just a more polished version of Deal or No Deal with a much bigger single.

Plus his other artists like Chevy Woods have been able to do whatever they like, Juicy J is wilding out, he did that shitty Cabin Fever tape and the word behind Taylor Allderdice is its K&OJ part two. That Snoop Dogg collaboration was the second best thing he's ever done and that's a project that could have had all kinds of politics behind it but instead it felt totally organic.

I'd totally wager that Rolling Papers is more Wiz' fault than any A&Rs. Most of his music is similarly average and dull.

him (and taylor gang, for that matter) have released a total of one album on a major label and the biggest criticism was that the album was "too pop" and, for the most part, not keeping with the sound he established coming up.

but i agree with the rest.

signed on the low. The new formula seems to be have a successful independent grind & buzz, then big major label deal. But I'm thinking in some cases the reality is that these guys have affiliations and deals with the labels already, and strings are being pulled to make it look like these artists are making big independent moves, like bankrolling mixtapes, blog love, videos, etc..

Ever since "Kush & OJ" things have gotten a bit fishy. That project was made to look like an independent move, but I think Wiz had actually signed the major label deal already. They kept it on the low, and it ended up being a great look for him.

I remember the first I heard of him I thought he was Black Wall Street guy which would give him an Aftermath affiliation one way or another, and that was back in 2007 or so

He signed to Warner back in 2006 and then was dropped with everyone else on the urban side a few years back. He put his album out last year through Tech N9ne's label.

a lot of the newer artist I/we dig, who we feel got an organix buzz off the nets, seem in retro to have some dollar behind them. as long is the product is right, it's all good. i just don't know how some one like KRIT for instance, can just keep giving shit away for free. he really doesn't need to anymore. He got a fan base and they/we are willing to support.

i thought that was known...Kendrick mentioned it a bunch of times in interviews

This deal reminds me of the Drake one with YM but Dre don't have the buzz YM does at the time and i bet later down the line they will want to get out of being linked to Aftermath. I don't see why it had to be a joint venture.

Being courted is one thing. TDE never asked to be courted by Dre. And showing love back for being courted is cool and all but not in business.

It bit Drake in the ass when he wanted to leave. Now he just has to roll with it and act accordingly cause he has to.

Weird how dramatically Schoolboy Q's profile has risen since his verse on LiveLoveA$SP.
