perhaps i overstated.

obviously, babyface has a very long list of hit songs.

still

at his best, i don't think he's in cole porter's league.

let's do it, let's fall in love
night and day
love for sale
i get a kick out of you
too darn hot
don't fence me in
what is this thing called love?

just for starters

you may not know them as cole porter's work, but he wrote musicals featuring these songs that went on to become standards as performed by miles davis, billie holiday, ella fitzgerald, frank sinatra, rosemary clooney.. really, a host of talent.

my opinion is that porter's songs are better lyrically AND melodically.

the fact that a great many of his songs have become standards speaks to cole porter's importance.

I firmly believe it's almost impossible to make that song unenjoyable, it's one of those songs where it's all about the skeleton of it. You can throw any sort of skin and tissue on top to make it come alive but the basic blueprint is always going to shine through and carry it.

the last 80s and the early 90s, the competition was between babyface and jam & lewis.

both were hit-making machines, with probably teddy riley a distant third.
