"Let's marvel at Victor Wooten bass solos."
Fri Mar-02-12 12:54 PM by denny

I've been browsing his solos on youtube. A great virtuoso. You can tell he likes rock music. More swing than Jaco Pastorius though you can tell he loves him. Victor gets looser.

In the one above...I'm reminded of some ongoing discussions about sampling. Cause Vic starts playing a perfect little thing to use around 3:40 to 3:48. House music perhaps? Dips back into it at 4:05 to 4:20. Then again...and most definitively at 4:35.

Amazing Grace (harmonics):

They are more different than similar (Abasi plays 8-string guitar and plays mostly in a metal band, albeit an instrumental and very original one, Animals as Leaders) but Tosin uses his fingers and particularly his thumb in very much the Wooten style (ever seen Wooten's brother?), is Wooten's equal as a ridiculously virtuosic beast, and is very tasteful and soulful when not thrashing your head off.

Here is a ridiculous video of Mr. Abasi (not metal):

that's probably due as much to my prefereence for the ARU vs. the Flecktones as to any specific instrumental abilities. Or maybe it's the fact that Victor relies so heavily on his rhythmic approach that it sometimes seems to come across at the expense of melodic sennsibilities.

But really, it's splitting hairs between the two. There are few musicians for whom such degrees of improvisational noodling/wankery are even acceptable, let aone consistently and thoroughly enjoyable, as those two. I was privileged to see them on the same bill at one point many moons ago.
