"Less popular albums by artist you like?"
Mon Feb-27-12 03:05 PM by BlackandProud

At the top of my list right now is Marvin Gaye's "In Our Lifetime". Man, this album is just great. Marvin's voice was just powerful and I love how he could do the soulful thing and then flip right on over to the funk. This album got the funk and I love every second of it.

What's a less popular album by an artist that you really like?

Midnight Love... I couldn't mess with some of that production. It didn't sound "Marvin" enough. and Dream of a Lifetime was bullshit. Even though there were good songs, outside of "Sanctified Lady" I don't fuck with the '80s style records on there, but I do the "older" style stuff that's on there. I wish he had lived to really hook up with Rick James and get that update like the Temptations did.... but there was no way that was happening when he left Motown.

as for me...

y'all already know: Prince's first 2, Herbie's '78-82 output, Stanley Clarke in the "R&B" era (I WANNA PLAY FOR YOU through FIND OUT!), Rick James GARDEN OF LOVE, Ray Parker Jr.'s last two albums before the one he dropped in '06 (that one was just irreconcilably BS)...

Man, I co sign to the fullest! It's like, Midnight Love was cool vocally but some of that production just won't hitting. It was just... there. If he would've hooked up with Rick, Midnight Love would've been a hit album without a doubt.

I think the whole mess with LOVE MAN (what eventually became IN OUR LIFETIME?) and other stuff soured Marvin on working with his long-time record label.

It's a shame, because everything about the songs that were intended to be there, and even the album cover...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7c/Loveman.jpg

...felt like it would have just worked. Marvin transitioning into the "Funky Uncle" with "Ego Tripping Out" as the lead? Sheeeeeeeeit. Those songs sound more like "1979" than "1981" (year it was released) as it is.

Oh yeah, I think so too. The album had it all; the songs and the look/image. That album cover is one of my favorites too. It's just so cool because it's a natural pose. They caught him in his element.

I think it was pretty much forgotten until that deluxe edition was released a few years back. Pretty decent album, if not kind of underwhelming. I go back to it pretty regularly because of the unfamiliarity of the material.

EDIT: Whoops, hit reply and then took a phone call so I missed post #3.

Man , deeply dig those areas!
I always get in this airy mood when spinning Stanley's "Let Me Know You" title track.

And i just discovered a live version from 1998 at Kimball's East Oakland!
With the late Robert Brookins on keys, Nick Smith on keys as well and Ike Wiley from the Dazz band on drums.

that's cool that Stan still played that song in live set. I felt that he showed another side of himself during those years. Working with Dukey had him doing a lot of R&B production work. And that was also cool he got Brookins in that band, Brookins was his go-to keyboardist on a lot of those sessions; he was one of my favorite not-well-known artists out there.

Like almost every rap double album, it's definitely bloated and could easily lose five or six joints.

But it also has some of Nas' best work in a LONG time on there.

Thief's Theme
Sekou Story (Nas had some people believing Scarlet was a real female MC)
Just a Moment
Virgo
Message to the Feds
Disciple
You Know My Style

All GREAT songs.

Even Getting Married, a song whose concept couldve been a mess, worked.

in terms of Smokefest, it wasn't even on the rateyourmusic website until I added it a couple weeks ago despite having a wikipedia entry, and in the case of the Scientist/King Tubby album I am literally the only person I've met anywhere who's heard or owned this album, and it took an entire year for another user to come across and rate it on RYM after I added it. After 4 years it's only been rated once, every other cataloging on that site is a wishlist add.

Bums me out because it's easily my favorite dub to listen to.

I ordered that online from Snoop's website back in, what, 1998? or was it 1997? Either way, was mad young but always a huge Snoop fan...loved it ever since. In fact, that disc is currently one of the 6 CDs in my car CD changer right now. Been there for months. Granted, I mostly listen to my iPod in the car but when I forget the iPod or something, I tend to pop that one on the most.

It's not my favorite but definitely a personal classic. I always thought it was great but I've seen a lot of hate on here and a few others places. Sure it's not samples galore like previous albums but they're still great beats and sounds better mixed than a lot of what was going on at the time.

I always just assumed it was the consensus that it was the last album of their classic run.

I'd like to propose Muse-Sick N Hour Mess-Age.

it's mediocre at best. That their first 2 were classics (Personally I think their debut leaves a lot to be desired but still enjoy it) and Fear of a Black Planet was a victory lap. Anything after that isn't true PE (Whatever that means) b/c of the lack of samples.

I know Chakaholics consider this album to be a collection of the kid's sloppy seconds, but I disagree. In retrospect to her previous catalogue, it really showed that seasonal Chaka is as much as a "wild chile" as young Chaka, and it displayed her sass and humor, not to mention her angry side.

Chaka was hungry when she made this record, it was her first independent and she gave it all she got.

Another reason why this album is so dear to me, is the fact that it marked my introduction to BOTH artists' worlds

In response to Reply # 0

Personally speaking I don't think this album is as anywhere close to as bad as critics ravaged it to be. Sure it was their answer to Sgt. Pepper's, but is that really that bad? I mean The Stones had already evolved past their R N'B roots by then and were into the baroque pop of the time, it's not like the album was a one off-thing that came out of the blue. They were going with the times, just this style didn't suit what their fans were looking for I guess.

I think it's the only album were Charlie Watts sounds awake the whole time. Plus Keith was developing his rougher style on his, songs like "Citadel" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHOL5M0dfiw "2000 Man" at the 1:20 mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm6Xh7x9i40 . So to me it's still a Stones album, just a different style they played with (Like Reggae, Disco, Punk, etc. that they tried later on)

After a solid run of gold awarded records, this project received none unfortunately.
It was a continuation of the new wave-ish funk direction which they started with their previous Alligator Woman-project. This time the sonic sound was even more electronic with the drums and synths all over the place, and without any horns. Besides one ballad-cover, there was the excellent swing groove of "You're A Winner" with great harmonized vocals, and a bunch of tight jams.

ALLIGATOR WOMAN actually started my favorite Cameo run (ALLIGATOR WOMAN through WORD UP!)... i.e. "The New Sound" Cameo. I really love the "Lockett" Cameo for different reasons... Cameo kept a tight ballad, but in that era they were out of this world.

As for STYLE, that album had that song, "Aphrodisiac" which really kicked that sound out in full force, and one of my favorite joints of all time, "This Life Is Not For Me"... if only for that opening bit with the Simmons drums, and the guitar.

Weird, my previous post under reply number 67 was visible here on the Lesson for a few days and now it's totally gone + more replies are missing? Just posted a new reply on that spot (number 68). Some techy stuff going on with the site?

Presumably, if I didn't allow it to run, I didn't get anything bad on my PC?
