"appreciation post for ?uestlove: the music historian."

i mean... honestly,
i am probablly a bigger fan of quest the music historian
than i am of quest the musician.

which is not to say that he's not a beast of a musican.
but he always has so much insight as a historian
that anytime i youtube a performance,

i inevitably stumble onto an interview,
and i end up watching all of his interviews.

i mean... i like to think that i know
like, a little bit about music.

quest makes me feel like i don't know shit, like... at all.

like, honestly... i feel that i could live for another 60 yrs,
dilligently pursuing information,
and i wouldn't still wouldn't know as much about music
as quest knows now.

i don't know how he has time to listen to all of this music
and form an opinion about it.

like... dude's knowledge is like an encycolpedia.
i so wish he'd write a few books.

i know he's busy,
but just want a book from quest about music.

and to be honest, how many journalists
really have a cool perspective on the artistic side of
black artists?
that's just a side you really can't hear unless you look for it.

yeah, i'm dick riding.
so what.

questlove... if you're reading this...
you're the man.

>yeah, i'm dick riding.

He's one of a handful of people who I'd listen to for hours speak on whatever.

If it was a book, I'd read it at every chance. On the toilet, at home with the game on in the background, on my lunch break.

If it was a dvd with just one camera angle, no production values, and was just him talking, I'd cop.

Hooray for ?uestlove.

that's the truth.

my first exposure to him was work w/ other artists.
like, i'd really dig the drumming on a record,
and i'd check the liner notes...

and quest was there.

so he was always like, in the periphary of music i liked.
then i saw him on chapelle...
which put a face w/ the name.

eventually i saw him do documentary talking about MJ,
and that hooked me on his interviews.

and the more i heard him talk about (other people's) music,
the more i got into his.

so now, i'm exploring his catalouge.

it's ass backwards, i know...
but that's how i got into the roots to be honest.

still exploring their catalouge.

Being a historian might sabotage an artist?

It's great to know where your roots are, but it could go too far at a certain point. I wonder how many times ?uest has thought "that's way too obvious" when they were actually good ideas that a non-historian would appreciate.

Or in the midst of trying to replicate a classic sound forget about the actual reason for making the song?

I guess it's the whole "effective" thing. Is it better to be ignorant of what has been effective music of the past and just throw what feels right at the wall?

On the flip side, I'm sure a lot of their best material would never have happened without the deep record collection and knowledge of engineering techniques.

It seems like a blessing and a curse to me.

actually quest said in an interview that
they have multiple versions of songs from albums that weren't released
b/c everybody in the band didn't agree that that was the version to call the final version.

so i'm sure there are some very cool tracks in the vault
that remained unreleased for reasons that you or i wouldn't pick up on.

but i wouldn't think any artist is hurt
by having to broad of a musical palate to draw on.

that's like an saying an author would be limited
by knowing too many words.

interesting... kind of reminds me of math rock some guys do. It's genius but it sounds like shit to the average listener.

Not saying The Roots are shit but I knew a few cats who refused to do a hot 4 minute song because it was "boring" to them even though fans thought it was fire.

I used to have tons of arguments about artist who made the messenger more important then the message.

but if he wrote books or even a blog on music, (modern-day music or even the historical threads within contemporary music) i'd street team for him.

his opinions are very insightful and well-thought-out and well-informed. if he ever decides to part ways with The Roots for whatever reason, he could have a good twilight to his career writing i would believe.

and thinking why don't other artists break their music or
the process of their music down like this dude..
it just read away so easy and it was SO insightful to the point i just kept on copping more roots cd's just to read the liner notes.

then i religiously went on a hunt for every project quest was on..
in the process i picked up hints ranging from drum micing, snare techniques, jaydee's famous guitar loop till new music, old recordings, interviews and so on..

what i really want to see is some sort of docu/book about the SV/Roots/D/Erykah/Common recording periode or the Electric Ladyland era if you will..

I think a book he would write would be similar to Zappa's autobiography, which would be great to me.
