"No Jay-Z on "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap" by Ice T"

No Jay-Z on "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap" by Ice T. Word is Ice T's film got a lot of love at the screening.

http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.18588/title.ice-t-reacts-to-getting-his-documentary-placed-at-the-sundance-film-festival

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O1wIQNaN9w

So, the word is all the big name MC's (Nas & Kanye included) took part in this film but Jay-Z declined. They say that all of the legends were happy to be interviewed by Ice T and share so many perspectives on Hip hop (Chuck D talked about this on Twitter a weeks or so ago and was talking about Jay-Z not being part of this was like a NBA History joint and Jordan declining interview)

Why do you think Jigga declined? Do you feel that he thinks that he is above this type of thing at this point? Does the think he is bigger than Hip Hop? (Of course I can't wait to see it regardless and not mad at Jay-Z either way b/c that was his choice)

I'm just curious to your thoughts people... peace

The problem with Jay-Z is that he's so concerned with pushing his brand deeper in the mainstream that anything under the radar is a waste of his time.

If it was a documentary by Scorcese he would have returned those phone calls. Hell, now it's in Sundance he will probably try to get in on future edits, lol.

>lol...(loaded line) but yeah I feel your opinion.

because it be nice to get a perspective from him on hip-hop that isn't concerned with the classic hip-hop mythos 'young drug dealer, memorizing rhymes on the corner, yada yada yada' he's been pushing.

Like it be nice of him to honestly talk about the shenanigans that took place in the studio during the recording of various albums...the impetus to resurrect the dis track, why he supposedly hates Cam, etc.

It's unfortunate that one of the bigger stars of the era is going to have a history that could get summed up in a wikipedia page.

Sometimes it feels like Jay-Z is no longer "ours" (rap music).

Not hating or anything, just an observation.

'hears the footsteps' and is afraid to lose the empire.

It's why he will never hit Tupac or even Biggie levels of adoration; he doesn't allow a connection to his audience. He's got diehard fans...people who love the fun club bangers...music nerds that appreciate the technicality of his music. But if he died tomorrow watch how quickly we would manage to forget him, despite being such a trailblazer.

I meant you aren't gonna see Jay-Z in heaven murals or people converting a building to a tribute to him in Brooklyn.

What the man has attained is awe-inspiring...the problem is that he doesn't come off awe inspiring since he comes off so cold, lol.

He already has/had one..
And has appeared in more than few more..
And has his own book.

This movie will be good and really doesn't need him, IMO.

It's not like the guy is UNSUNG or underrepresented in the media or anything. LOL.

Jay is a "Cold Analysis" mofo. He can see repercusions of certain things.
Lemme explain : Jay did not want to be "On Record" saying things he did not control the outcome of.
If he says something on his own album, he has a promotional tour to "play" with the media and rectify/control THE message.

This Ice-T Movie/Doc is an "Indie movie". If it was a major studio release, Jay can call a big wig at the studio and ask them to "edit" the final piece.( And you're asking yourself how can he do it ?)

I don't know the extent of your familiarity with Ice-T hip-hop catalog. But, if you are famialiar with ICE-T catalogue, then you know this next song : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bicN4ryVQSI

Okay , see a whole lot of young people think Jay-Z "99 Problems" is an original song.

"And I love 'em all, I love 'em crazily
And they love me back - that's why they stay with me
So if you havin girl problems, I'll be there for you son
I got 99 problems and a bitch ain't one - hit me..."

Not sure what you mean fam. Hov is still Hip Hop even if he think that he is above stuff like this now. He isnt hip hop in the Chuck D kind of way (talking about the culture on a regular basis) but the music still is rap/hip hop...

You have to realise that Jay-Z has moved beyond being a rapper. He's a pop star now really.

Watch how quickly this post will devolve into a "Jay-Z is wack" slug fest. He's effectively outside what many hiphop heads would consider hiphop.

I suspect in a small way he feels the same.
