"PSA: Homeboy Sandman is a New York MC"

And by that I mean an MC who continues in the tradition of hip-hop MC's from NY. Note I said continues. Cause one of the things I like about him is he's still pushing things not just homage throwback flow or anything.

But listening to this Subject:Matter EP (which is pretty dope btw), it occurred to me that there really isn't a NY label that could have scooped him up and done him justice. That's kind of a shame to me. I mean Duck Down maybe but that wouldn't have been a perfect fit.

The fact that there isn't a NY home for a NY MC of his caliber, that is an issue.

...I get your point, that said, I think Highwater Music did the best they could...to me, "The Good Sun" was extremely dope, and it will be tough for even Stones Throw records to top it...Long live the MC!

but I think Subject Matter is a great start. It shouldn't, but it bothers me that "New York Nights" isn't on it. Feels like it would have fit in so well with the rest of the ep.

...for an emcee of his stature, but what we got to realize is that Stones Throw has a built in cult following, which means they got an expected number of fans that will cop just cause it's Stones Throw and the fact that Madlib or OhNo will be involved production wise.

Stones Throw already has a name, got distribution in retail chains, got vinyl distribution thru Fat Beats, has easy access and a fandom overseas (especially in Japan), and easily got a roster of artists that can go on tour & do promotions when a new artists' album or ep drops; plus they probably got better play around money when it comes to paying for production and guest artist spots on a rapper's album than smaller indi-rap labels.

All in all, High Water Music still gave Homeboy Sandman a great jump off start that many other labels would've failed at, yeah he could've put out an album with Fat Beats, Nature Sounds, Brick Records, Duck Down, Shaman Work, and so on but I think all those labels knew about him and didn't even take the chance to do anything with him.

Heems. Heems is by far one of the most progressive out of NY, which is probably why he barely gets noticed. NYer's are funny. They want NY to dominate hip-hop, but only in a 1990's fashion and don't bother paying attention to their own progressive artists.

things, but when i listen to the songs
i can't muster up any enthusiasm for them

Homeboy is enjoyable when he keeps it jokey e.g lightning bolt, mean mug

and Kendrick when he goes project blowed mode, style, technique and exercises in flow e.g look out for detox, rigamortis

It doesn't help that there are a fair amount of "lyrical" dudes who are making way better albums than Sandman. He definitely has some technical skills but his stuff just has very little replay value for me.

I didnt see those mentions when I replied.

nothing interesting? I can see it not being everyone's cup of tea, but have you heard the tape all the way through? IMO its pretty damn great musically and not everything is a quote unquote houston sound rip-off.

this shit is refreshing in a stale ass climate.

I respect your opinion, but ASAP Rocky is as contrived and derivative as they come IMO. I cannot think of one remotely original thing about him.

Not that anyone cares, but if I'm gonna name "refreshing" artists out of NY right now

Elucid
KA
Despot
eXquire
Bronson
Faro Z

are all waaaay iller IMO

is miles ahead of the average NY rapper's album.

I won't pretend he's a good rapper (he's only slightly above average at best) but the beats coupled with his rapping is more interesting than someone rapping well over a boring ass beat.

...with Heltah Skeltah and Pharoahe Monch. Maybe if he rapped over less boring beats, I could get into his material.
